YMMV / Attack the Light

Go To

  • Demonic Spiders: Large variants of generic enemies. Not only do they generally take five times the effort to kill, but they're next to indestructible unless you maintain Garnet's defense breaker. On top of that, they usually do three times the damage.
    • The giant bat is especially bad, as its dive attack after flying can potentially knock out a Gem with one hit, and the bat is the hardest enemy to block properly.
    • Giant moths are also pretty devastating, as like their generic counterparts they rush in and just spam damage until the player taps the screen enough to interrupt them. Unlike their generic mook counterparts, they do massive damage per hit as opposed to just Scratch Damage.
  • Game-Breaker: Garnet's Rocket Punch ability costs 5 stars, but does powerful damage over an area, and while it requires you to tap a randomly shifting reticule at the right moment to select the area of effect, all combat pauses until you tap the screen, allowing you to take your time to target your enemies.
  • Goddamn Bats:
    • The actual bats. Their main attack is to charge the player with a very quick ramming attack, which is hard to block because they don't have an obvious tell like other enemies do. You have to judge by the circle which appears under the targeted Gem. They can also fly out of range of your physical attacks, and since they are encountered in Stage 1 it's likely your Gems won't even have an Anti-Air attack yet. Said flight moves ends with a very damaging dive attack; the Giant Mook version can potentially land a One-Hit KO if you fail to block it. Red versions have the added bonus of causing burn on contact.
    • The moths. These enemies are unique because they can't be blocked. Instead, they charge in and do a constant series of attacks which you have to interrupt by rapidly tapping the screen. Dealing with them essentially boils down to taking your turn then strumming on the screen with as many fingers as possible.
    • Finally, the starfish. They shoot three stars at a target, and all three have to be blocked. It can't be interrupted.
  • Good Bad Bugs: From the dev's own tumblr:
Anonymous: There's a glitch in ATL where, if the bagel sandwich is used against the third boss, the boss will keep blasting the sandwich repeatedly with no effect. Are bagel sandwiches all-powerful, indestructible beings?
Grumpyface!: hahaha. I’m going to go with yes... Yes they are.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • At the end of the game the Light Army takes A Form You Are Comfortable With in mimicking Steven himself, which is the third time Steven has had an army shaped as himself, previous instances being the Watermelon Steven Army from "Watermelon Steven" and the Time Copy Stevens from "Steven and the Stevens".
    • This is also the second instance of the Crystal Gems being forced to fight a Mirror Match, which previously occurred in the episode "Ocean Gem" vs. Lapis Lazuli. Also, as shown under the That One Boss entry, both fights are some of the most difficult ones the Gems have had.
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: The developers intentionally made the game on the easy side, as although they wanted to appeal to classic RPG fans, they also did not want to alienate the show's younger Target Audience. Despite this, however, no one seems to mind and most fans agree they struck the perfect balance of being easy but not too easy (for being a $2.99 App Game, anyway). This was later addressed with the addition of Diamond mode, which increases enemy strength and hides the tap cues to make the game more challenging.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The "ting" sound upon doing an action command successfully, especially when it's followed up with the chime of a lucky hit and/or Garnet punching something.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games: The game is generally considered to be a very well-executed mobile game, which manages both to be true the source material and a loving send-up to the RPG genre.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Hmm...an Urban Fantasy RPG with Turn-Based Combat that has a party of four fight beings not of this world, has humor based around the Fourth Wall (Leaning on the Fourth Wall in this case), and the protagonist is The Medic of the team. Wasn't this done before?
  • Surprise Difficulty: Like the game series that Attack the Light is based on, missing more than a few action commands may bring about a very swift end.
  • That One Boss: It's generally agreed that the most difficult of the game's bosses is the doppelganger boss fight in the Strawberry Fields. Not only does the boss heal and induce Status Effects, all three copies have the same combo attacks you do, and Amethyst's copy is guaranteed to hit your whole party once per round. You better have saved some healing items and Star Fruit, because otherwise it'll be pretty difficult to wear down the boss before you start losing Gems. There's an achievement for beating the boss without losing any Gems, which is very difficult to pull off the first time (you can always just go back after beating the game, making it a cakewalk).
  • The Woobie: The final boss, the recombined light soldier.
Why... Are you... testing me...? ... I have... failed you...
