YMMV / ATTACK on MIKA

Go To

  • Fan Nickname:
    • Ichi has two fan nicknames, "One" (despite his name has wrotten on katakana, what can't be used as tranlatable writing system, the number 1 in Japanese can be also transcripted as ichi) and "Itchy" (omophonical nickname without any hate on him).
    • Mika is "Covid Beauty".
    • Momoko is "Scary Bunny Best Friend".
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic:
    • Hirokazu in regards of being forced to bring his younger brother Yuuki along wherever he goes. Their parents (and the narrative) treats him as cruel, despite the fact that the latter is way too young to attend some of the places the former is going. Even while Hirokazu screamed abuse at Yuuki for snapping the necklace given to him by Misaki in their scuffle, it was brought about by the built-up stress of being forced to babysit him. While the reason for Yuuki's clinginess was because he overheard his parents saying he was adopted and he wanted to be a real brother to Hirokazu, this still wasn't an excuse to enable this behavior.
    • Takuya in regards to revealing to his younger sister Hazuki that she was actually adopted in the middle of their fight. His mother (and the narrative) treats him doing this to her as cruel, claiming that Hazuki loves him despite her treating him horribly. It doesn't help that when Takuya brings up her bullying, his mother brushes it off by saying that it's just her way of playing with him. Even when Hazuki eventually apologizes for her treatment of him, Takuya still apologizes for not understanding her feelings, even though he had no reason to believe anything other than her hating him.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Hazuki, who runs away in tears after her older brother Takuya reveals that she was adopted. We're supposed to believe that Takuya went too far, but this was right after she told him to his face that she wished they weren't related. Never mind her treating him like trash throughout the story. When looking for her, Hazuki's friends reveal to Takuya that she actually does admire him, even bringing them over to cheer him up, yet the first thing she says is that she doesn't want him around her friends! The story tries to show that Hazuki does care for her brother, but feels more like an Informed Attribute.
      • Their mother is not safe from this, with some even believing her to be worse than Hazuki. Despite acknowledging to their father privately that she's become a problem lately, she still does nothing in regards of Hazuki bullying Takuya, even ignoring that him revealing to her that she's adopted was her son at his Rage Breaking Point. She believes that Takuya went too far, yet she brushes off Hazuki's treatment of him as her being a Loving Bully.
    • Hirokazu's parents never face any kind of personal responsibility for forcing him to babysit his little brother Yuuki. Yuuki himself is spoiled, but he doesn't have any malice in what he's doing. They reveal to Hirokazu that Yuuki's clinginess towards him was because he overheard them saying he's adopted and he was compensating for it. While both brothers eventually reconcile again, the fact remains that the couple is still enabling Yuuki's unhealthy behavior.
    • Kaname comes off as this for leaving Rui, who had to wear a glass eye as her right eye was extirped because of a tumor, in favor of her sister Misa. Even when Yuri revealed that Kaname did this to punish Misa for her bullying and to keep Rui safe, keep in mind he was Rui's only support since her parents mistreated her for her disability, which makes him come across as a traitorous dick after leaving her. Furthermore, he took three years to dump Misa, after which she became paraplegic and completely blind from a car accident. Moreover, Kaname didn't even need to come up with such a needlessly complicated plan to avenge Rui when he could just stay firmly by her side and tell Misa off instead.
    • Kokomi, who many view as an Easily Forgiven Karma Houdini. It's implied that her abusive behavior towards her father Tsukasa was as a result of her mother Mamiko's influence, but the fact that she quickly turned on her mother and make her the scapegoat as soon as it was clear that Tsukasa wasn't going to give them a second chance showed that not only did she not have any true remorse, but she was willing to abandon her mother if it would put her back into her abused father's good graces despite both planning on exploiting him for his money. The fact that she initially viewed Ichijo, the man who advocated the most for her, as her father's underling (only changing her attitude when he was revealed actually to be his partner) and mentioned wanting to exploit people when she grew up is proof that she would not only not become a better person but may end up even worse down the line.
    • Mika in this story comes off as much more unlikable than usual. As a senior worker, she constantly looks down and mistreats Ichi solely because he's a part-timer who didn't graduate. When she finds out that Ichi has a new girlfriend, Lilina, she demands he breaks up with her, claiming it would interfere with his work. And when that doesn't work, she tries to get her to break up with him by revealing that he's just a dropout part-timer. Lilina dumping Ichi not for being a drop-out but a part-timer is supposed to be her showing her true colors, but comes off more as Derailing Love Interests. Mika justifies her behavior saying that she's in love with Ichi, but has no idea how to interact with the opposite gender due to going to an all-girls school. In the end, Mika is Easily Forgiven as she and Ichi plant the seeds for a new relationship. This only works due to Mika and Lilina's regular roles of Protagonist and Antagonist respectively.
  • Woolseyism:
    • Mina's story has a brief one. In the original Japanese version, when she complains she forgot her pen, the last boy says she can borrow his battle pencils, to which the protagonist Koharu calls him weird. In the English dub however, since battle pencils aren't well known outside of Japan, that line was changed to "smelly markers" with Koharu remarking they're too old for those.
    • In the English version of this episode, Ai isn't sure whether her teacher's first name is Kyo or Kei. This joke, not in the original Japanese episode, is based on a mistake in that episode, where the teacher is referred to as both Kei and Kyo at different points.
