  • Complete Monster: Gil T. Cigar, better known as Gil The Butcher, disguises himself as racer Richard Riesman while hired to sabotage the big race. Murdering his employer when he grows sick of taking orders, Gil proceeds to try to slaughter everyone about before kidnapping a woman named Sophia and several others, threatening to have Sophia gang-raped by his men should she prove problematic. To amuse himself, Gil has two hostages given one gun with a promise to release who kills the other, even killing any of his subordinates who fail him after torturing them with multiple non-fatal gunshots. Plotting to send Sophia along in a train packed full of dynamite into Chicago station, Gil plans on a massive loss of life to brand his personal "Might Makes Right" philosophy into America.
  • Narm: The above-mentioned Complete Monster has such a stereotypical anime villain design and has so many Kick the Dog moments, especially in a relatively short timespan after revealing himself in episode 10, it can be hard to take him seriously.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: The show's Wacky Races-across-America premise drew comparisons with Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Steel Ball Run.
  • Uncertain Audience: The anime was a flop with general audiences despite its good critical ratings — it revolves around a cross-country race in a Steampunk-inspired setting very loosely based on turn of the century America, but despite the over-the-top setting, characters, and action, the series also has multiple character arcs and backstories revolving around serious topics such as women's rights and the folly of revenge. Viewers who tuned in to see colorful, ridiculous action a la REDLINE found it hard to tolerate the angsty backstories and morals, and those who might have been interested in the characterization found it hard to take seriously because of the more out-there elements, and the series' sales suffered because of it.
