  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Did Ani genuinely believe that her marriage to Vanya would last forever and that he would stick by her even after he ran away, or was she so desperate to escape her predicament that she deluded herself into believing that he loved her? The second interpretation seems more likely, but it could easily be either, or even the former sliding into the latter as she realizes that he really isn't going to fight for her.
    • In the final shot, is Ani's emotional breakdown because the exhaustion and humiliation of the last few days have caught up with her? Or because she's back at her dreary old life that she won't be able to escape? Or because she's again lost control after her purely transactional initiation of sex with Igor was interpreted as a romantic gesture? Or because she immediately feels ashamed for engaging in meaningless sex and lashing out? Or because she realizes she can't handle real love and intimacy? Or because she trusts Igor enough to let her guard down in front of him? Or maybe it's a bit of everything?
  • Award Snub:
    • At the beginning of the televised awards season, there was some shock when the film won 0 of the Golden Globes it was nominated for. This led many pundits to prematurely predict that the film may have peaked at Cannes. This almost completely repeated at the Critic's Choice Awards, where Anora again lost in every category... except amusingly Best Picture.
    • Of its six Academy Award nominations, the one award not won by the film was Best Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov as Igor. While he wasn't expected to win due to Kieran Culkin in A Real Pain sweeping at all the major award shows, it's believed that either Borisov or Edward Norton in A Complete Unknown might've otherwise been the favorite to win under different circumstances.
    • There were a few who thought Karren Karagulian or/and Mark Eydelshteyn could have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. Karagulian was nominated for an Independent Spirit award alongside Yura Borisov.
  • Ending Fatigue: Some viewers feel that once Ani and the goons catch up with Vanya, the film still has roughly 30 minutes to go, where we see them finding out they can't get it done there because they married in Vegas, so they have to fly to Vegas and get the annulment there, and then we still get more scenes of Ani staying the night in the mansion, and then a particularly drawn out montage of her packing her things before Igor drives her home, and then the final scene in the car. However, a good chunk of viewers don't necessarily see this as a bad thing, and argue it may be intentional; after all, Ani is the one caught in the middle of this, being dragged all over the country and having to endure something she never even prepared for, and that the final ten minutes really allow you to feel her headspace that she is in.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Unsurprisingly, there's quite a bit of overlap between fans of this film and Uncut Gems, due to the New York setting, and the similar filmmaking styles. The massive amounts of Cluster F-Bomb helps too.
  • He Really Can Act: While Mikey Madison has earned positive reviews for her supporting roles in Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood and Scream (2022), she garnered universal acclaim for effectively portraying the titular protagonist of this film as flawed yet endearingly complex and sympathetic, not to mention the sheer amount of physical work she put into preparing for the role, such as learning how to pole dance for real and doing most of her own stunts. It paid off with her winning the Oscar for Best Actress.
  • Hype Backlash: The immediate reaction to Mikey Madison winning the Oscar over Demi Moore in The Substance, the latter who was widely regarded as the favourite to win. Some people stated that they felt Madison winning over Moore 'proved the theme' of the The Substance, note  while others pointed out that Madison had already won the BAFTA and the Independent Spirit Award along with a majority of critics prizes, and that Madison had been considered by pundits to be a favourite to win before the televised awards began.
  • Jerkass Woobie: As much as an immature troublemaker Ivan is, his behaviour is clearly the product of his mother's cruelty and father's detachment. All his partying and drugging is just a diversion from his own loneliness, to the point that he is basically paying people to be his friends. However, he also has no consideration for anyone other than himself and has no remorse for everything he puts Ani through, not even considering apologising to her.
    • Tom and Crystal are smart alecks who enable Ivan's worst behavior, still they weren't asking to be forcefully intimidated by Toros and betrayed by Ivan (and Ani, to a lesser extent).
  • Memetic Mutation: A GIF of Ani walking up to Vanya's mansion for the first time has become a highly exploitable reaction image online.
  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: The film made over $3m at the Russian box office, far more than the average international import.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: The pairing of Anora/Igor is often called Anigor by the fandom.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: For more than half an hour, the film seems to be nothing but a fairly standard romance story with hardly any conflict in sight. Then Ivan’s family gets involved and things get a lot more fun.
  • Spiritual Successor:
    • Pretty Woman was originally intended to be a dark and uncompromising look at the reality of being a sex worker; a number of reviews have claimed that this movie is probably what that movie would have looked like had they stuck with the original plan and Disney hadn't hijacked it into being a romantic comedy to make it more marketable.
    • It's also considered to be one to Uncut Gems. Both set in New York, with Main characters with heavy New York accents, tons of Cluster F-Bomb to go around (it sits right behind that movie's 560 uses of "fuck" at 517), both with a very fly-on-the-wall filmmaking style that makes extensive use of non-actors for realism, and both with a very anxious and stress-inducing atmosphere (although one could watch this movie for the first time and be surprised by that, considering the first 40 minutes are very much a romcom).
  • Squick: Lulu tells Ani that a client remarked that she looks like his barely legal daughter... and proceeded to order five dances. Ani celebrates that she got so much work, but they both agree that the implications are disturbing.
