YMMV / Annabelle: Creation

Go To

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: People were very skeptical about this film going in, being a prequel to another prequel which didn't have the best reputation itself, plus not being sold yet on the very concept of turning The Conjuring into its own cinematic universe. But it ended up being quite well-received as a solid-to-great horror film that easily could have stood on its own, with the connections to the previous films increasing confidence that more entries in the franchise could turn out just as good.
  • Complete Monster: See here.
  • Ending Fatigue: The Distant Finale drags the film on for a bit.
  • Fan-Preferred Cut Content: Many of the deleted scenes are viewed as canon by many fans. They turn Alpha Bitch Carol into a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, give Sister Charlotte a better backstory and her own haunting subplot, and explain the apparent non-reaction to the death of Mr. Mullins.
  • Moe: Linda and Janice are both so adorable due to their close bond and worries that they'll be split up when they're adopted.
  • Signature Scene: The scene where Linda is menaced by the spirit and attempts to scare it off with her toy gun has been called "one of the scariest moments in movie history" by some fans. A large part of what makes the scene so distinctive is how there are so many sounds of the demon approaching in the dark, getting closer and closer to Janice while still remaining offscreen.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Similar to another horror film prequel, this film was better received than its predecessor, Annabelle.
  • Wheelchair Woobie: Janice doesn't start the movie in a wheelchair, merely walking with a crutch due to polio. Then her good leg is broken, leaving her wheelchair-bound, despondent about her chances of being adopted, and defenseless against terrifying demon attacks.
  • Woobie Family: The Mullins Family. Their broken sense of grief about the death of their daughter and how they have been unwitting pawns for a demon is conveyed very well.
