Animal Mechanicals

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • In the episode "Turbo Bean Trouble", there's the line "Turbo beans do not like being touched".
    • As the episode "Mechana Monkey Island" revolves around a giant banana, at the end, the monkeys... ''ride'' the bananas.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Does Sasquatch cause Komodo to be the Butt-Monkey on accident? Or is he actually aware of what he's doing and just wants to mess with Komodo?
    • Speaking of those two, does Sasquatch just so happen to realize the exact same things Komodo warns him about before getting knocked out? Or is it that Sasquatch wants to have some fun with the overprotectiveness Komodo has towards him?
  • Awesome Music: The theme song, due to its heavy metal traits. Sounds pretty badass for a preschool show.
  • Ass Pull: In the episode "Puffer Cloud Island", the team comforts a small cyan cloud that feels different from the rest of the other clouds via telling it that everyone is different and that's OK. Later, to reinforce the moral, the little cloud feels different from the rest again, so the team discusses that each of them has a special power that sets him or her apart from the rest and ask the cloud what's its. It says it still doesn't know, but later, and without any explanation whatsoever, it reveals it's actually a raincloud.
  • Cult Classic: The show didn't make much of a dent in the preschool television sector, but maintains enough of a following after its ending that there are known shipping circles pertaining to the series.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Animal Mechanicals NEW is despised by pretty much everyone, for being a lower-budget, borderline In Name Only reboot that derails the entire cast into selfish jerks. WildBrain seems to have taken the hint, as "NEW" episodes have barely any presence on their channel compared to the original, and only got more sparse over time.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Rex having borderline Big Eater tendencies to the point where descends into madness may sound par for the course in a kids' show, until you remember that Rex is a robotic Tyrannosaurus rex, a dinosaur very much known for its hangry behavior.
    • Why are Komodo and Sasquatch, well, a Komodo dragon and a sasquatch specifically? Their initial letter sounds bring to mind Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, a pair well-known for having a dynamic of Cloudcuckoolander and Cloudcuckoolander's Minder, just like Sasquatch and Komodo. The reversal of this letter-based archetype reference (i.e. the Quixote being Sasquatch and not Komodo, likewise with Sancho and Komodo) is further complemented by the fact that Sasquatch and Komodo have the Red Oni, Blue Oni colors reversed as well: Sasquatch the red oni being blue and Komodo the blue oni being red.
  • Fridge Logic: Why does Komodo need glasses when he's a robot?
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The series was very popular in Latin America and Brazil, mainly due to the fact that it aired on Discovery Kids, the main preschool cable channel in both regions.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The series starred an Animesque turned-into-alicorn unicorn that can cast magic spells with her horn two years prior to the whole "magic horn" unicorn stereotype expanding in media due to Friendship Is Magic and five years prior to Twilight's transformation into an alicorn.
    • Also, one of the Animal Mechanicals is yellow-colored and Speaks Fluent Animal. In other words, Mouse predates Fluttershy.
    • The episode "Snail's Pace Race" has crosses between snails and race cars. Sound familiar?
    • In the episode "Tiger Knight Island", the team must complete a test of strength, a test of intelligence and a test of courage in order to deliver a green Energy Emerald that will restore the Tiger Knights' power. Said emerald is given to the Animal Mechanicals by a Techno Toad. Hmm... tests of strength, intelligence and heart, along with a green powerful gem and an amphibian character? Yeah, about the word "amphibian"...
    • The series features the same comedic tone and pink-red-yellow-green-blue colour scheme that would later crop up in Smile PreCure!, released five years after Animal Mechanicals. In both series, the yellow one is also The Baby of the Bunch.
  • Ho Yay: Komodo×Sasquatch is popular in some circles.
  • Spiritual Successor: This show can be thought of as a lower-stakes preschool version of Beast Wars, which is also about robotic animals that transform into machines to save the day.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: This was the main reason why Animal Mechanicals NEW flopped. Fans were upset about the massive changes, from the character designs to the personality overhauls to the lack of dialogue.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Some viewers thought that Mouse was a boy.
  • Woolseyism: In the episode "Mechana Pegosaurus Island", Sasquatch mistakes the story of The Three Little Pigs with Humpty Dumpty and Rumpelstiltskin. As those two stories aren't well known outside of English-speaking countries, the Brazilian dub changes them to Aladdin and the Lamp and Little Red Riding Hood, while the French dub does so to Tom Thumb and Hop-o'-My-Thumb (the latter being a story well known in France).
