- Ship Tease: Despite the books pushing a Platonic Boy/Girl Heroes relationship for Mandy and James, there are a few decent moments that tease the possibility of more.
- In "Kittens in the Kitchen", James is informed by the janitor that he needs to keep his "little girlfriend" in check; James doesn't say anything but turns absolutely tomato red.
- In a later book where Mandy is on a trip to Ireland with her father, she participates in a local ritual where you peel an apple so that the peel is in one piece and then throw it over your shoulder, with the shape of the letter it lands in indicating what the name of your future spouse will start with. Mandy's peel lands in the shape of an S, prompting her dad to comment "Ah; Seamus." Mandy cocks her head and says that she doesn't know a Seamus; when informed Seamus is the Irish form of James, she flushes and insists "James is just a friend."
