  • Crowning Moment of Funny: Mandy and James's Crash-Into Hello meeting in Puppy Puzzle is already pretty funny but then Mandy admits that she only knows him as "the owner of Benji the cat".
  • Tear Jerker: Any time an animal dies. The series pulls absolutely no punches when it comes to the reality that in veterinary work Anyone Can Die. Even the family friendly deaths can be extremely difficult to deal with. Some especially bad tear-jerkers are the stillborn puppy and Felix from Dog At the Door, as well as one of the titular foals in Foals in the Field
  • Retroactive Recognition: Eddie Redmayne made his screen debut in "Bunnies in the Bathroom", an episode of the 1998 television series.
  • Ship Tease: Despite the books pushing a Platonic Boy/Girl Heroes relationship for Mandy and James, there are a few decent moments that tease the possibility of more.
    • In "Kittens in the Kitchen", James is informed by the janitor that he needs to keep his "little girlfriend" in check; James doesn't say anything but turns absolutely tomato red.
    • In a later book where Mandy is on a trip to Ireland with her father, she participates in a local ritual where you peel an apple so that the peel is in one piece and then throw it over your shoulder, with the shape of the letter it lands in indicating what the name of your future spouse will start with. Mandy's peel lands in the shape of an S, prompting her dad to comment "Ah; Seamus." Mandy cocks her head and says that she doesn't know a Seamus; when informed Seamus is the Irish form of James, she flushes and insists "James is just a friend."
    • Ultimately averted though with the Hope Meadows series, as {{spoiler- James is gay, and has a couple of husbands. Yes, husbandS}}.
