Anger Is a Gift

  • Anvilicious: The entire book is unsubtle about police brutality and racism, with the authority figures doing everything short of twirling their mustaches.
  • Designated Villain: Most notable with Esperanza. She's gay and Latina, but the other LGBT/POC characters treat her like a clueless interloper at best, who's overstepping bounds when she does anything other than keep quiet and listen. When a gay Latino teenager is killed by police, her hurt and confusion are answered with "glares" from the other characters. When she's a victim of police brutality herself, and is described as scared, breathless, and crying, the protagonist's reaction is to think "This was what it took....He didn’t know if it was enough." It's indicated that being raised by white and clueless Bourgeois Bohemian parents has shaped her worldview.
