YMMV / Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

  • Memetic Mutation: Given the characters roster, "return to monke" jokes were to be expected — albeit, as unsurprising as it is, it's also very ironic as the point is actually to evolve from "monke" towards humans, pretty much exact opposite of the meme.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Given the subject matter, this game is for all intents and purposes, a video game adaptation of the first halves of Walking with Cavemen and A Species Odyssey, even ending with Homo Ergaster just as the first half of the former did.
  • That One Achievement:
    • Unlocking the omnivore neuron is an absolute nightmare, as doing so requires you to unlock all the other neurons for the four food groups that your hominid cannot innately ingest (fungi, mammal meat, eggs, and ovoparous meat). This means that you have to repeatedly give your hominid food poisoning, which can only be cured either through drinking copious amounts of water, eating colossal amounts of food, or waiting it out/sleeping it off. You have to do so for eight different neurons, one of which also requires a genetic mutation, before finally unlocking the ability to eat all foods and received increased nutrition from each variety. On Steam, only 2.1% of all players have this achievement.
    • "One Small Step for Man", the achievement for becoming bipedal, is only slightly below the omnivore achievement in terms of hassle. The process for unlocking it isn't actually that hard — players need spend time standing upright and wading through water to unlock the ability to walk a few meters before falling over, then gradually increase this time by walking/carrying heavy objects until they gain the ability to stand upright permanently. The real issue is just how long you have to walk for — it takes several hours to acrue enough walking time to progress the neurons, and after you go back onto all fours, you need to stop and manually stand up again to get back to walking. Only 5 percent of those who play the game on Steam have this achievement.
  • That One Level: The beach. With barely any drinkable water, extremely long walking distances, little food and the savanna sun, it's a colossal chore for those trying to find every location.
