YMMV / Amityville: The Evil Escapes

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: The housekeeper dies in a suspicious manner, and yet is never mentioned again. Her death shocks them, but they seem to immediately move on from it and do not give her a second thought after her death, despite earlier when she is treated like a friend of the family.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Danny losing his hand to the garbage disposal is awful. Blood spraying everywhere during the scene, including all over the shrieking Amanda, is kind of funny, in a morbid way. The severed hand later shooting out of a pipe and hitting the plumber in the face is hilarious.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The basic plot of this horror movie involves an evil lamp. Years after this film came out, a Family Guy cutaway gag would feature Stephen King pitching an idea for his latest book; "a couple is attacked by a lamp monster". His publicist is annoyed, saying that he is not even trying anymore.
  • Narm:
    • A lot of the lamp's actions, like sticking the bird in the toaster oven, vandalizing Jessica's room with crayons, and driving the plumber's van away.
    • The lamp is defeated when an old woman musters up the super strength necessary to yeet it out a window.
    • Honestly, the fact that the antagonist is a goofy looking evil lamp is pretty narmy altogether.
  • Nightmare Retardant: The vast majority of the film, mostly due to the fact that the main threat is a tacky lamp. Special mention goes the the scene where it is implied that the evil lamp drew with crayons on the walls, and the Sequel Hook that consists of an incredibly cheap-looking effect making the cat's eyes glow a cartoonish red.
  • So Bad, It's Good: A possessed lamp is corrupting a little girl by pretending to be her dead father as it telekinetically attacks people with household appliances. This sounds like a horror-comedy, but it is not, or at least not an intentional one.
  • Special Effect Failure: The Sequel Hook has the cat's eyes glow red in a very unconvincing way.
  • Squick:
    • Helen's tetanus-ravaged finger.
    • Amanda brushing her teeth with the disgusting black sludge, which the plumber is later drowned in.
