- Alternate Character Interpretation: Was Gordon's rejections of Selina's romantic feeling for him due to him not sharing said feelings, or due to him loving her but being unsure of whether or not their relationship could have survived in 1960s America, as well as him being more concerned with her receiving a proper education first? Or that he realizes at that point he has far more power over her, being the one who not only got her into the school but also got her away from her abusive mother and a life of prostitution, so he wants her on more equal footing. In the book, closer to the second and third points — difficulties posed by racial inequality, plus she's had so little experience and is in many ways younger than her actual age. Better for them both to wait until she has completed her education and has more experience of the world-at-large.
