Being on the verge of losing one of the only two people that genuinely cared for you will do this to you.

Ed, Edd n Eddy might be a goofy cartoon, but that doesn't mean that some of the characters can't really be felt for.

Jerkass Woobie

  • Eddy is a combination of this and Iron Woobie. Yes, he does deserve punishment most of the time, but he's cruelly humiliated and/or beaten in pretty much every episode, even when he does nothing wrong ("To Sir with Ed", "Smile For The Ed", "X Marks the Ed", "Your Ed Here", "A Pinch To Grow an Ed"). What's more, The Big Picture Show reveals his brother is an Ax-Crazy, sociopathic Jerk with a Heart of Jerk who abused/tormented Eddy all his life, made worse by the fact his parents apparently did nothing about it. Maybe they didn't know, or maybe they participated in it themselves. After watching the movie, and knowing the sad truth of what he went through, it can be hard to watch earlier episodes, where he was awfully humiliated ("To Sir With Ed" comes to mind...). If he hadn't had Ed and Edd as his friends all this time, Eddy would be one of the biggest, and saddest, mental wrecks in the history of animation, enough to give Shinji Ikari a run for his money.
Eddy: I made it all up, Double-D... So people would like me... think I was cool...
    • He momentarily becomes more of a straight Woobie in the movie. After Edd snaps and gives Eddy a huge "The Reason You Suck" Speech that almost breaks their friendship, he hearfeltly apologizes to Edd and finally admits to so many of the crap the Eds have gone through being his fault (despite also chewing out Edd back earlier). It's a good thing Edd found it in his heart to reconcile with him.
  • May is just as much of a Loving Bully to the Eds (specifically Ed) as her sisters, but also the most naive Kanker and often picked on by her older sisters. Best demonstrated in the Valentines' Day special.
    • In fact, all three of them could fall into the Jerkass Woobie category. Yes, they are temperamental, possessive, rude and unhygienic, but there have been moments that show they DO care for each other. They have barely any physical traits in common and it's heavily implied their mother Really Gets Around and they have three different dads who aren't around anymore, so they latched on to the Eds because that's all they know how to do. Notably, after spending most of the series violently pursuing them, the Movie shows them actually doing their best to protect the Eds from the wrath of the rest of the cul-de-sac; it can be inferred that in spite of their dubious ways of showing it, they do genuinely have feelings for the Eds. Ironically enough, their first appearance ("Nagged to Ed") didn't portray them very negatively, as while they did scare the hell out of the Eds and exchanged their clothes with their dads' robes, they at least showed genuine care and kindness towards the Eds, without trying to make them too uncomfortable (NOTHING compared to what they do later on in the series).
  • Sarah, of all people, becomes this in "For Your Ed Only," when she finds her room destroyed, and more importantly, her beloved diary missing. She's genuinely sad and cries to Jimmy.
Sarah: This is going to be a whole page in my diary- MY DIARY!!
  • Kevin also briefly becomes this in "This Won't Hurt an Ed". He's shown to be Afraid of Needles, something Eddy quickly exploits to his amusement as petty revenge... and a fear that many people will attest to in real life. Making it worse is that Eddy wasn't doing it to get back at Kevin for anything specific; he was just jealous because Kevin had won a sports event!
Edd: Inscure is the man who envies his fellow man's accomplishments, Eddy...
Eddy: Forget Acapulco! What makes stupid Kevin so special!?

Straight Woobie

  • Ed has to put up with his little sister's crap. He also has to deal with a father who doesn't give a care about him, and a mother who spoils said little sister rotten while treating Ed like crap. Not only that, but despite Ed being clearly too dumb to tell the difference between right and wrong, his mother still punishes him just for being too loyal a friend to not go along with Eddy's scams. Meanwhile, she lets Sarah, who routinely beats up other kids, including Ed himself, get off scot free.
  • Edd, compared to the other two Eds, is polite, meek and sensitive, but usually suffers no less. Although his parents seem to be relatively normal, they're never there for him, communicating exclusively through sticky notes and leaving him to do all the housework while they're off doing their jobs, presumably. He is also often given penalties along with Ed and Eddy, even if he hasn't done anything to deserve it! In the movie, he finally snaps because of it, only remaining with them because Eddy finally and sincerely admits to his faults.
  • Jimmy can fall into this. He's the youngest, most delicate and sensitive character, the biggest Butt-Monkey and slapstick magnet on the show, and also gets a few Break the Cutie moments. At least Sarah is always with him.
  • Jonny sometimes becomes this, like in the pilot episode and "Dear Ed", where he's sad and lonely without Plank. Even more so after watching the end of the movie, when he is beaten up by the kids, left without friends and reduced to becoming the new hated kid in the group, all because he was Late to the Action.
  • Rolf in "Wish You Were Ed" when he has become homesick. He's also a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds in "No Speak Da Ed", as he gets a ton of traumatic flashbacks of some awful feud that happened in his childhood.
