     Original Series
  • Character names:
    • Initially, Timmy was named Mikey, after one of Butch's brothers. After the two fought, he was renamed after Butch's other brother.
    • Fairies were meant to have space-related names (e.g., Cosmo), but this was dropped after Venus was renamed Wanda, the lure of a magic pun too hard to resist. In acknowledgement of this, Wanda's middle name is Venus.
    • Veronica's name was originally Carly.
    • Elmer's name was originally Carl.
    • According to an early series bible, Francis' name was originally Bruno Delvecchio.
    • According to this podcast, Poof was originally going to be named Dusty, as in Fairy Dust.
  • Character designs:
    • Originally, Timmy was going to be a redhead because Butch Hartman hates brown hair. He was forced to change his mind because he didn't want Timmy and Vicky to be mistaken for siblings because of their similar hair color. He then considered giving Timmy black hair, but decided it looked too heavy on him (though Timmy would be seen with black hair during his cameo in the Oh Yeah! Cartoons short "Terry and Chris"). Why Hartman could not have just made Timmy a blond is a mystery, though it was probably because he didn't want Timmy and Chester to look alike or it never occurred to him to do that.
    • Timmy's shirt and hat were meant to be blue, but Hartman ran out of blue marker and grabbed the next nearest marker — which just so happened to be pink. It stuck. In-Universe, it's explained that Timmy has lots of pink stuff because his parents thought he was going to be a girl.
    • Wanda’s hair was also going to be blue, but according to Butch, it was changed to pink to keep it from blending in with the walls of Timmy’s bedroom.
    • Cosmo was supposed to be a fat, bald guy, and Wanda was meant to be tall and thin. Cosmo's original design was reused in "The Boy Who Would Be Queen" for a male Wanda.
  • Denzel Crocker was originally conceived for a scrapped show pitch from 1996 called Barnaby's Bug about a boy with a talking bug that helps him through everyday life, but Hartman liked the character enough to put him in this show once that pitch failed. The show's setting of Dimmsdale was part of said pitch as well.
  • According to an early series bible, Mr. Crocker's backstory was different from the final series. Unlike the final where he was obsessed with fairies due to losing them as a kid, the bible mentions he used to teach chemistry at the high school until he accidentally blew it up, and is after Timmy's godparents to get his big break.
  • Channel Chasers was originally going to feature a parody of SpongeBob SquarePants, but it never got past the storyboard stage.
  • The earlier script for Wishology Part III was very different from what was finally shown: in the final scenes, there was no Reset Button and Timmy in fact used his Turbo Pits to create a type of light show for the party celebrating the victory. It was also stated in the script that the Darkness' Eliminators were created from the weapons that Turbo Thunder's people fired into it.
  • According to John Fountain, the character of Britney Britney was originally planned to be voiced by Britney Spears herself, and both John and Butch attempted to have her sign on to the show, but those plans never materialized.
  • Around 2005 or 2006, Butch Hartman considered making a theatrical movie. Unlike the later Live-Action films, this one would have been animated. The details aren't concrete, but the plot was this: Timmy, feeling sorry for the other kids whom Vicky has babysat, wishes that every child had a fairy godparent. This, of course, backfires on him because Vicky, being under eighteen, is still considered a kid so she gets a fairy — Jorgen Von Strangle. Meanwhile, since there is no one to guard them or stop them, the pixies and Anti-Fairies team up to take over the world. Butch has stated he would like to release it on DVD one day.

     Fairly Odder
  • The episode, "The Most Popular Person", was originally going to be called, "The Throne".
  • Roy's last name was originally going to be Ragland, instead of Raskin. The same goes for his mother, Rachel.

     A New Wish
  • Concept art from Chris Battle reveals different rough designs for Hazel in the planning stages.
  • Cosmo and Wanda's human design artist Mayuko Watson posted concept art of the designs, with Cosmo's originally going to have a stain on his shirt and be sandalless with a hole on his left sock, which were removed due to scaring the kids in focus testing. The post also shows unused designs for Cosmo and Wanda in more middle-aged and elderly looks.
  • An early pitch bible of the series reveals very different details and plans for the series that were scrapped or changed in development.
    • Originally, the series seemed to take place after Fairly Odder, with that being the point from which Cosmo and Wanda retired. In the final, it's made clear A New Wish takes place after the original series, with Fairly Odder falling into Canon Discontinuity.
    • Jorgen was originally going to have two pet donkeys named Zelda and Cheddar he was going to always travel with, based on Arnold Schwarzenegger's own donkeys Doris and Lulu. But the donkeys were scrapped due to not having the money to model them.
    • The second half of the first season was originally planned to go differently. Instead of Dev teaming up with Foop/Irep to take over Fairy World, Dale was going to learn about the fairies and, convinced it will make him the richest person who ever lived (something kept in the final), he teams up with the Pixies to conquer Fairy World. It was even implied via the early episode description that Dev and Poof/Peri (alongside Cosmo and Wanda) were going to help stop it.
    • A few of the episodes pitched in the bible were scrapped from the final. Including one where Cosmo and Wanda invite Angela and Marcus over for dinner and game night ("Dinner is Served"), one where Hazel goes to the dream realm to find the Dream King after being sick of having nightmares every night, ("Sweet Dreams") and a possible Day in the Limelight story focused on Dev and Poof/Peri trying to make it work as godparent and godkid ("Odd Couple").
    • Chip Skylark was to return as a celebrity TV personality. He hosts his own daytime talk show, "Chip!", and judges on a singing competition show, celebrity competition show, New Year’s countdown, dog show, etc.
    • The Pixies were also going to make a return.
  • According to this interview with Lindsay Katai, while Butch Hartman was largely hands off with the show's production, he did suggest one change that was used. Instead of being called Dimmadelphia, the setting was originally called Dimmsopolis. Both agreed that the new name was better.
