Season 1:

  • At the end of "The Test", Jake finds out that the old man who immolated himself did so because a loanshark company was pressuring him to repay his debt. They even harass him and his wife by making calls everyday.
  • "Read The Air" has Jake taken for a car ride by Ishida-gumi wakashus. His co-workers are not able to intervene as the wakashu used force to knock them off their feet.
  • "I Want It That Way" reveals that a shady loan company that makes unsuspecting victims cash out. And then when they can't pay back, the company secretly harasses them to make them kill themselves and collect on the life insurance they invested in.
  • "Yoshino", the first season finale, drops several shocks:
    • Samantha gets tipped off by Akira that he may have a source on Polina's location but they need to pay a ransom of Ten Million Yen. At the meeting place, she discovers that Akira and the other hosts made up the story to rob Samantha.
    • This leads to Samantha having insufficient funds to pay off the final tranche of payment for her club, leading her to make a deal with Ishida, who accepts.
    • Sato is stabbed and left for dead by one of his subordinates.
    • Katagiri and Miyamoto plan a sting to get evidence on Tozawa's drug trade, but Tozawa quickly surmises that Miyamoto's plan and presumedly has him killed. Tozawa then confronts Katagiri and warns him that he'll have his family killed if Katagirl pursues any investigation on Tozawa.
    • A mysterious person drops a surveillance tape from the Yoshino, a clandestine sex ship managed by the Tozawa-gumi secretly, outside Jake's doorstep. The tape shows Polina being beaten since she refused to have sex with an older Japanese man. She later gets beaten by a (likely) yakuza man and dies of major injuries from the beatings. Jake takes the tape to Katagiri.

Season 2:

  • At the end of "Like a New Man", it's implied Tozawa decided to move against the Tozawa-gumi kaicho, Noboru Nakahara, and had him shoved out of his apartment window.
  • In "Illness of the Trade", Tozawa announces the Tozawa-kai will be a corporation for its public face so that law enforcement cannot easily take them down. At the same time, Hitoshi Ishida was assassinated by a masked gunman.
  • "I Choose You" has Katagiri confronting a man with a tattoo on his wrist. The same one Samantha saw with the assassins seen killing Ishida. And the man has his hands raised up.
  • "The Noble Path" has Hayama killed by being drowned in a public bathhouse by Sato and almost everyone else.
