The Dick and Paula Celebrity Special was a short-lived animated sitcom made by the same company that produced Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, Home Movies, and Science Court. It aired on FX in 1999 and only lasted six episodes before being cancelled.
The premise was a unique twist on the Talk Show format: The titular characters (played by Richard Snee and Paula Plum) would interview famous people from history and/or literature, such as Oedipus Rex, Paul Revere, Marquis de Sade, Charles Darwin, etc. Accompanying Dick and Paula were Johnny (Jonathan Katz), the band leader whose dialogue consisted almost entirely of puns. Dick and Paula's nephew Andy (Andy Kindler) also appeared in "live via satellite" segments.
As with all of Soup2Nuts's earlier shows, it was animated in Squiggle Vision style, with the Limited Animation masked by constantly squiggling character outlines.
Tropes featured in Dick & Paula's Celebrity Special:
- Anachronism Stew: The whole gimmick of the show is mixing a present day talk show with long-deceased figures.
- Instrumental Theme Tune: A jazzy piece.
- Running Gag: Paul Revere keeps getting bumped.
