A direct-to-television animated movie presented by (and starring) legendary comic book creator Stan Lee, created by Genius Brands International.
Lee is driving through the Mojave Desert trying to collect his thoughts after a recent story pitch to Archie Comics didn't go so well. While driving, an alien space ship crash lands near him. Inside are two law enforcement officers, the super strong Strong Arm and his flying partner Silver Skylark, along with five intergalactic criminals (who aren't really all that evil); Lazer Lord, who can shoot energy blasts from his hands; Roller Man, who can curl up into a ball like a pill bug and smash enemies; Lady Lightning, who has super fast speed; and brothers Micro, who can shrink in size, and Kid Kinergy, who possesses telekinesis.
The aliens are devastated to be stuck on a backwater planet such as Earth, but Lee, a lifelong comic writer (who's still shopping ideas for a new comic series), is elated to be meet them. He helps hide them from the U.S. government authorities in exchange for gaining their exclusive marketing rights. And it looks like the aliens arrived just in time, because a race of shapeshifting lizard men called the Taegons have secretly set up shop on Earth and are working to destroy the world's infrastructure in preparation for an invasion.
Based on a a 2012 comic miniseries by PGS Entertainment, the film is the first in a planned trilogy, which as of 2022 have still not materialized.
The film premiered February 1, 2014 on The Hub Network.
Mighty 7 provides examples of:
- 90% of Your Brain: The aliens get their powers from using 80% of their brains as opposed to humans using 10.
- Celebrity Toons: Starring Stan Lee as himself.
- Creator Provincialism: Lee lives in Long Beach, California, which is the setting for most of the film.
- Deadpan Snarker: Stan Lee, apparently having a lifetime of practice at it.
- Escape Pod: The gang's vehicle, one of the few surviving parts of their crashed spaceship.
- Evil Lawyer Joke: Strong Arm says their race exterminated their lawyers centuries ago and an awed Stan says we can learn so much from them.
- Fragile Speedster: Lady Lightning doesn't quite have the same fighting endurance as the others.
- Genre Savvy: Stan Lee. He's written enough comics to know what's happening.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Lazer Lord has a Hair-Trigger Temper and No Sense of Humor, but he's given a Freudian Excuse for his flaws (see You Killed My Father below) and is definitely one of the good guys.
- Known Only by Their Nickname: The aliens only go by the hero names Stan comes up with for them (presumably because of the contracts he has them sign). The only one whose real name we hear is Lazer Lord (it's Blastok).
- Intangibility: The Escape Pod can turn intangible when not moving, to let planes fly through it.
- Invisibility Cloak: The Escape Pod can turn invisible and is kept that way when parked outside Stan's house.
- I Should Write a Book About This: Stan's main concern about aliens fighting over Earth is that it would make a good comic for him to write.
- Lizard Folk/Reptiles Are Abhorrent: The villainous Taegons. Lizard villains are a recurring motif throughout Stan's career, which gets lampshaded a few times in the film.
- Magic A Is Magic A: The Escape Pod can only turn intangible when it's not moving, meaning it can let planes fly through it but not fly the gang into an enemy base. Cue Stan sarcastically muttering about how much sense that makes.
- The Men in Black: They're already using Imported Alien Phlebotinum as the story begins, and Stan spends much of the film protecting the Mighty 7 from them.
- Nebulous Evil Organisation: The Men in Black that start coming after Stan Lee and the Mighty Seven. We have no idea what they're after, but we do know that they've already acquired some Imported Alien Phlebotinum—and are likely looking to add to their collection.
- Shout-Out: With this being a plot about Stan Lee interacting with a group of "reality superheroes", it doesn't pass over the chance to mention how Stan was the host for Who Wants to Be a Superhero?.
- Sliding Scale of Anti-Villains: Each of the alien prisoners turns out to be a solid Type IV, because Good Feels Good.
- Trapped in Another World: The Mighty 7 are trapped on Earth, with no idea when (or if) they'll ever be rescued.
- A True Story in My Universe: The Mighty 7 comic that Stan Lee writes is based on their real exploits.
- War Is Hell: Roller Man took part in a war against the Taegons, but was ultimately so horrified by what he saw that he deserted.
- Winged Humanoid: Silver Skylark has the ability to sprout silver wings (not to mention bird-like talons from her feet).
- The World Is Always Doomed: When Strong Arm berates Stan for not caring about the Alien Invasion, Stan says the planet's been in peril every year of his life and he has bills to pay.
- You Killed My Father: The Taegons killed Lazer Lord's father, which is why he wants revenge against them so badly.
