Saturday Evening Puss is a 1950 MGM cartoon directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, starring Tom and Jerry.

When Mammy Two-Shoes goes out for a night of Bridge playing, Tom sneakily invites three other cats into the house for a Jazz party, disturbing Jerry's sleep in the process. Hilarity ensues when Jerry tries to shut the party down.

This cartoon provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Jerry brings the owner back so that the cats can stop playing loud jazz and he can sleep. Only for her to immediately turn loud jazz on the radio.
  • Bowdlerization: The original version of the short features Mammy Two-Shoes donning comedically gaudy jewelry and spending her evening playing bridge. Due to the prominent anti-Black stereotyping involved with this plot (invoking the stereotypes of Black people lacking good taste and having gambling addictions), her scenes were reanimated in 1966 for TV airings, now depicting a white teenage girl who polishes her nails and goes out for a dance with her boyfriend. Later airings would restore the original animation, but redub Mammy's voice to be less exaggerated.
  • Everything Is an Instrument: The cats make music out of things around the house, including a trashcan lid as a cymbal, drinking glasses as a xylophone, and even Butch's tail as a bass.
  • The Faceless: Mammy Two-Shoes, except for the Freeze-Frame Bonus (see that trope for more detail).
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Mammy runs home from her bridge game, her face can be very briefly seen for just a few frames.
  • Giving Someone the Pointer Finger: Mammy does this to Tom (along with shouting his name) when she returns to find him hosting a wild party.
  • Here We Go Again!: After chasing Tom and the other cats out of the house, Mammy decides to just stay home and relax with "a little soft, soothing... hot music!" (beat music in the 1966 edit) and starts playing the same jazz music Tom was playing, leaving Jerry back at square one.
  • Impact Silhouette: The small cat tries to swat Jerry with a trashcan lid, but all that does is leave several impressions of his head on the lid.
  • "Open!" Says Me: Mammy slams into the front door so hard she pulls it right off its frame and drags it into the living room. When Tom opens it and sees Mammy on the other side pointing an accusing finger at him, he slams it on her face, the pointing arm sticking right through the door.
  • Right Through the Wall: The noise generated from Tom's jazz party goes through Jerry's mouse hole.
  • Squashed Flat: Jerry when he's caught on the venetian blinds and Tom pulls them open.
  • Suddenly Speaking: Jerry actually voices his complaints about the noise to Tom, although he can barely be heard.
Jerry: HEY! Stop! I'm in my little room in there trying to get some sleep, but you guys are out here with your blah, blah, blah, blah!

Soft... Soothing... HOT Music!

After throwing Tom and his friends out of the house, Mammy Two Shoes laments that her evening of playing bridge has been ruined, and decides to cool off by listening to music. Jerry thinks he's finally able to get some sleep as a result, but unfortunately for him, her music is just as loud as the one Tom and his friends were playing.

How well does it match the trope?
