Dorothy Meets Ozma of Oz is a half-hour special based on Ozma of Oz. The special was released in 1987.
While on a trip to visit family in Australia, Dorothy ends up washed away. She ends up back in Oz with a talking hen named Billina. There, Dorothy meets the new ruler of Oz, Princess Ozma, and goes on an adventure.
This cartoon provides examples of:
- Adaptational Attractiveness: Uncle Henry and Aunt Em are less weathered and more youthful than described in the book.
- Adaptational Displacement: Discussed in the live-action intro, which assumes the watcher has seen the MGM film but has not read the books.
- Adaptational Jerkass: A mild case with the Hungry Tiger, who rather than his conscious not allowing it refrains from eating Dorothy and Billina simply because he'll inevitably become hungry again after doing so.
- Adaptation Dye-Job: Ozma has red hair instead of her standard brown. Her dress is also the wrong color.
- Animated Adaptation: The film is an animated adaptation of the third Oz book.
- Age Lift: Dorothy's aunt and uncle look younger than they are in the book.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Dorothy is a sweet Kid Hero with curly blonde hair.
- Or Was It a Dream?: Dorothy wakes up on the ship and thinks it's a dream but then she finds the egg and Ozma appears in the window.
- Prematurely Grey-Haired: Aunt Em and Uncle Henry have grey streaks in their hair to emphasise their tough lives.
