Bandolero is a Spanish cartoon created by Neptuno Films in co-production with Canal Sur television. Based on popular tales, the story tells the story of a Bandolero, who finds himself fighting against two corrupt Andalusian tyrannical leaders and protecting those in need.
Not to be confused with the 1968 Western film Bandolero!.
This series has examples of:
- Big Bad: Don Rodrigo is the main villain in the whole series, especially in the last chapters.
- Big Eater: Tragabuche
- Corrupt Politician: The Governor becomes one thanks to Don Rodrigo's Influence. But he changes his mind in the series finale after he is betrayed.
- Criminal Amnesiac: In one episode, Tragabuche got hit in his head and forgot who he was. Realizing this, Don Rodrigo convinces him that Bandolero is his enemy and easily defeats him with his brutal force and the aid of the evil general. Luckily, for Bandolero, Dolores hits him with a pan and recovers his memories.
- Criminal Doppelgänger: In one episode Don Rodrigo hires one to steal from the citizens and ruin Bandolero's reputation so he can imprison and execute him. He was this close to killing him if not for the criminal to do a Heel–Face Turn and ruining Don Rodrigo's plan.
- Dirty Coward: Don Rodrigo
- In one episode, Don Rodrigo forces Bandolero into becoming one and ruining his reputation if he wants to release Rosa from prison. It doesn't last
- Divide and Conquer: This is a tactic that Don Rodrigo often tries to cause disruption in the band and divide them in order to weaken the group and leave Bandolero more defenseless.
- Disney Villain Death: This is how Don Rodrigo meets his final demise in the series finale.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": The title character is rarely addressed by his proper name Juan. Justified as to keep his identity a secret, as far as Don Rodrigo and Campomayor know, Juan was killed alongside his father in the fire.
- Fat and Skinny: Fasto y Nefasto
- Flashback Nightmare: In the series finale, Bandolero suffers one reminding him of the fire that killed his father.
- Ghost Town: In episode two, the guards visit a town and discover that besides one family who stayed, every citizen who lived there migrated away to find a better job unable to pay the exorbitant taxes.
- Harmless Villain: Fasto and Nefasto are infamous for this. The rest of the guards are a bit more competent than them, but still...
- Hated by All: Don Rodrigo, the big bad of the cartoon, is one of the least liked characters in the show, despised by the townsfolk and the protagonists alike, with only Campomayor enjoying his company due to being corrupt and sharing their mutual hate towards Bandolero and his own men due to his high rank in the militancy. By the time the series ends, he alienates everyone as he betrays Campomajor and imprisons him, kills Don Candido when he attempts to protect Maria from him, and shoots sergeant Jeremias when he refuses to arrest Bandolero without any justified reason.
- Heel–Face Turn: The governor changes his ways after he is betrayed and imprisoned by Don Rodrigo in the finale.
- The entire army also does this as they refuse to aid Don Rodrigo anymore who shot his commander in the arm after disobeying him.
- He Knows Too Much: The main reason Bandolero's father was killed.
- Historical Hero Upgrade: Tragabuches
, real name José Ulloa, was a real-life Spanish bandolero and smuggler who became a famous He-Man Woman Hater after being betrayed by his girlfriend. - House Fire: Intentionally provoked by Don Rodrigo and his army to kill Bandolero's father.
- It's Personal: One of the reasons Bandolero wants to defeat Don Rodrigo is to avenge the death of his father.
- Invisible Jerkass: Fasto and Nefasto turns into these with the power of a potion in an episode, and takes advantage of that to take revenge on both their army and Bandolero's band. Too bad for them that the effects of the potion were temporary and were discovered and defeated by Bandolero's band.
- Just Like Robin Hood: The band is well known for stealing the taxes money to return it to the villagers.
- Kill It with Fire: This is how Don Rodrigo killed Bandolero's father, by burning his house at night while he was sleeping.
- Lured into a Trap: Don Rodrigo often uses this trick against Bandolero and his friends.
- Murder by Inaction: On the night before the forced wedding, Don Rodrigo refuses to rescue María from a fire he unintentionally provoked. Luckily for her, Jeremias rescues her.
- Near-Villain Victory: In some episodes Don Rodrigo almost succeeds with his plan, only to be thawed at the last minute
- Pyromaniac: Don Rodrigo's usual methods involves punishing the townspeople by burning their houses for not paying the imposed high taxes.
- Yet Another Christmas Carol: Inspired by Charles Dicken's story. The team with the help of Fasto and Nefasto tricks the governor into believing the three ghosts are visiting him so he can donate money to a poor church for Christmas.
- You Killed My Father: Bandolero wants to end Don Rodrigo's reign of terror, mostly to avenge his father's death, and later Don Candido
- 0% Approval Rating: Don Rodrigo, the tyrannical general and the big bad of the series doesn't seem to be liked by his own men in the militancy that much, only obeying him due to his superior range. It isn't until Rodrigo betrays the governor Campomayor and harms Sergeant Jeremias, a much more respected member of the militancy, that they refuse to obey him anymore, abandoning him after witnessing the heinous act.
