"Welcome to TV Trash."

TV Trash is an internet review show that started in 2010. Hosted by Chris Moore (a.k.a. The Rowdy Reviewer), the show takes a stab at some of the worst TV shows imaginable (e.g. Heil Honey I'm Home!, Galactica 1980, the Battletoads short-lived TV series). The show also takes on the worst episodes of his favorite TV series. (Such as Star Trek: The Original Series' "Spock's Brain" and the entire sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.)

The show began on YouTube in February 2010, with Stripperella being the first show he reviewed, followed by Veronica Mars, My Mother the Car, and Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation. For the first year of the show's existence, it was stuck in obscurity, with Rowdy bravely continuing on with the project despite few viewers. In the middle of 2011, he saw an increase in popularity. Perhaps most notable is how, until October 2012, he did not rely off of giant review sites like Channel Awesome or Reviewtopia to help boost his fanbase. He did it all himself, using his own self-funded website. On October 24th, 2012, he announced that he would join Reviewers Unknown. His 4th episode was the first to be posted on Blip.tv, and all episodes were posted on there until the Summer of 2014, when he became the victim of a purge at Blip that claimed several other reviewers, that led to him deleting his videos from Blip in protest and re-uploading them on Dailymotion.

Rowdy also has an ongoing The Legend of Zelda review project attempting to review all of the Zelda games in the series. It's all to celebrate the series' quarter century anniversary. In 2013, he started another retrospective series on the Ninja Turtles animated series. In addition, he hosts two other shows: "The Wrestling Mark," a Kayfabe wrestling news show, and "The PO'd Pizza Guy", which revolves around an angry delivery guy giving advice to his customers... in a not so nice way.

In addition to reviewing bad shows, he has two segments called TV Treasures, where he reviews forgotten gems such as Jack of All Trades, Police Squad!, and Laff-A-Lympics; and TV Timeline, where he takes a look at the television adaptations of various franchises. Rowdy also has another series entitled NewsCrap, which takes a look at poorly-done parody news articles. He's since added a new series called "Rowdy and Friends" with is a series of shorts of his adventures as a Dallas transplant living in L.A. while trying to get one of his ideas made into a TV series or Film.

He also appeared in The Cartoon Hero's review of the Ctrl+Alt+Del Animated Adaptation.

2017 was the year where Chris created his own all original webseries Rowdy And Friends.

TV Trash contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Accentuate the Negative: On par with many other online reviewers. Though he will admit if something isn't bad and will also review good stuff.
  • Adaptation Decay:invoked Discussed in his review of the American adaptation of Coupling, when he points out that the show is an American copy of a British show that itself was a copy of Friends.
  • Alter-Ego Acting: This is averted for the most part with his character for TV Trash, who seems to share a similar persona with Chris himself, albeit angrier.
  • Amazon Chaser: He is head over heels for strong female characters, especially Buffy.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: During the South Park review, after declaring "Stanley's Cup" as the worst episode for its third act, he says that the Red Wings wouldn't play such a goon squad game against 4-year-olds because hockey players are nice guys...
    "And just because I feel like driving another point home, no Red Wings player would wear #9 because they retired it for Gordie Howe!"
    • His biggest problem with Seth MacFarlane is not that he is preachy or says Walt Disney was an Anti-Semite, but because he's not funny.
  • Artistic License – Geography: After a character in Home Alone 5 says "Will you look at that snow? Never got that in California", he cues up a picture of a snowy scene in Fresno and says, "That's Hollywood for you, thinking that California doesn't go any farther north than Bakersfield." Also an example of Dreaming of a White Christmas.
  • Author Appeal: He appears to be a big fan of Peanuts, even though he hates Lucy and finds many of the animated specials bad.
  • Batter Up!: He has frequently threatened the creators of works he dislikes with baseball bats.
  • Big "WHAT?!": He has this reaction to the end of the Quantum Leap finale.
  • Black Hole Sue:invoked This is the biggest reason why he hates Venus de Milo. The series seems to revolve around her at the expense of the original turtles.
  • Brain Bleach:
    • In his Stripperella review: "This is why I do reviews on an empty stomach."
    • In his review of Cavemen, after he saw one of the main characters about to have sex with his cavewoman girlfriend:
      "You know, I've always had a thing for strong-willed women. THANKS FOR RUINING THE FANTASY!"
  • Berserk Button: He nearly goes insane at the infamous Jew-killing scene from the Disney universe in "Road to The Multiverse".
    • And after a KKK joke in the last Baby Blues episode, he finally blows up and orders the feed cut. He is then seen with a baseball bat and all messed up.
    • Whenever Ed Asner is in something he is too good of an actor to be in.
    • After Allen Gregory makes a racist joke that causes him to defend several other shows that he found unenjoyable in older reviews, he decides to end the review right there.
    • He really hates propaganda, as seen in his review of JFK and his decision to name Porter Stansberry's "New America" ads as the worst television commercial ever.
  • Brick Joke: His review of Someday You'll Find Her, Charlie Brown references the "Liquid IQ" gag that started off the previous week's review of Shasta McNasty.
  • Catchphrase: "Welcome to TV Trash!"
  • Call-Back: In his review of Brickleberry:
    Woody: If we don't get this park in shape, they're gonna shut down Brickleberry.
    Chris (imitating Woody): And there's a real estate agent that looks like a dog already looking to build a mall here!
  • Caustic Critic: On one hand, he does review good stuff, and actually gives it legitimate praise. But, when the material he riffs on is bad, he cranks up the anger.
  • Chekhov's Gun: His remote that allows him to hack into other's reviewers' feeds. It's first mentioned in the Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series review, then used in his review of Ctrl+Alt+Del with The Cartoon Hero. It turns out that frequency was what allowed Malicia to find him
  • Cluster Bleep-Bomb: At the end of his review of The Boondocks.
  • *Cough* Snark *Cough*: In You're the Greatest, Charlie Brown:
    Peppermint Patty: You should've seen it. Freddie Fabulous from Fremont and the Masked Marvel got all tangled in the last ten yards. Wow, what a mess!
    Rowdy: Yeah, I think we would've liked to have seen that too. (coughs out "Show, Don't Tell")
  • Crossover: Rowdy did a crossover with The Cartoon Hero with the review of the cartoon adaptation of Ctrl+Alt+Del.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Due to in-story reasons, The Wrestling Mark and Slacker Sis do one episode each.
  • Declarative Finger: Used so often that it's essentially a Character Tic.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: In the Tabitha review, when he mentions that Lisa Hartman tends to get a lot of Fanservice:
    "Yeah, I'm just gonna skip over to the next clip and stop ogling her now." (beat) "I'm still ogling, aren't I?"
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Averted: He is opposed to this logic, as seen in his review of "If It Smells Like An Ed"
    "And the episode ends with the Eds likely getting carried off to get raped. HILARIOUS!"
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Invoked when he notes several offensive jokes, including a rape joke in Men Behaving Badly, several jokes in the Family Guy episodes he reviewed, and several more in Allen Gregory.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Count Siggeyai, the villain from The Groovenians episode, who sent Chris the aforementioned show, won't send him Brickleberry, citing it as a level of evil even he is not capable of.
    • Though Professor Stupidiot doesn't have such standards and ends up sending it.
  • Everyone Has Standards: During his review of the Encyclopedia Brown mini-series, when covering the episode 'The Case of the Flaming Beauty Queen', Rowdy refuses to make the obvious joke.
    Rowdy: Nope. You all know my stance on those jokes by now.
  • F--: When reviewing the Family Guy episode "Family Gay", he gives Seth MacFarlane an F-quintuple-minus on the topic of delivering an acceptable Gay Aesop.
  • Foreshadowing: Done occasionally, but most notably during his streak of reviewing shows with a large Fanbase:
    "And next week, we're gonna Totally WOOHP! It! Up!"
    "Tune in Next time when we get mad, won't take it any more, and stick it to those who wanna stick it to the man!"
    "There's still the big one, that I've waited oh so long to go after. Oh yes. Next week, it's time!"
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: On the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's death, he reviewed the movie JFK, despite his show's main focus being television. But don't worry, it's a two-part special. The second part? A review of the Quantum Leap episode "Lee Harvey Oswald", one of the most well-known attacks on the film.
  • Get a Room!: At one point in the Animalympics review, he makes this suggestion to Kit and René.
  • Girls Have Cooties: Whenever a young boy doesn't employ this trope, Chris cries foul.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: One of the main points of the showing is there's no swearing, which was inspired by Atop the Fourth Wall.
  • Guilty Pleasures: In his opinion, It's Flashbeagle, Charlie Brown, just because of how catchy the tunes are, and how much fun everyone seems to have.
    • He also cites that, for how much Ally McBeal has aged, the show is still very enjoyable.
    • Surprisingly, even Hannah Montana. He admits that it can be stupid at times, and he spends nearly half the episode pointing out Fridge Logicinvoked with Hannah's Secret Identity, but he still thinks that it's harmless fun.
    • V.I.P., which he calls out as stupid and cheap, but still enjoys just the same.
    • Small Wonder: He admits that it's formulaic and cheesy, but also says that it has some original ideas and brings the occasional laugh.
  • Has a Type: He apparently likes redheads a lot, so he is taken aback when both Men Behaving Badly and Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer have unlikable female redheads.
  • Heroic BSoD: From "Heil Honey I'm Home!" to his review of TMZ, he went into a deep depression due to the badness of the former.
    • A literal one briefly (in between commercial breaks) occurs during the James Bond Jr. review when the cartoon's version of Dr. No is shown to have green skin.
  • He's Back!: His reviews of TMZ and Small Wonders were first episodes back after total reviewer breakdowns.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • During his review of Yo Yogi!, he notes an episode a character who has to wear his hat all the time is lame.
    • In the Coupling review: "It just shows that it's not always a good idea to keep drawing from the same well over and over again just because it seems safe and clear to work every time. Oh well. Next time, another Charlie Brown special review! See you next time on TV Trash!"
  • Idiot Hero: He considers Major Nelson this for not realizing Jeannie was in love with him.
  • Idiot Plot:invoked In his opinion, Olive, the Other Reindeer has one.
  • Insult to Rocks: After the infamous "book-burning scene" from "Not All Dogs Go To Heaven", he stated that South Park's comparison of the Family Guy writers to manatees is an INSULT TO THE MANATEES.
    • In the Shasta McNasty review, he says that implying that the show jumped the shark midway through its lone season (when it was renamed just Shasta) is an insult to Fonzie and the shark.
  • Jerk Sue:invoked Rowdy sees the title character of Gary the Rat as this: "Gary's a jerk, he's better than everyone else, he cheats to get his way, and he always comes out on top with no remorse or retribution. He's the freaking Barry Bonds of cartoons!"
  • Joisey: Malicia is sent here by Jeannie, who considers it a "Far away, desolate place!"
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:invoked Rowdy mentions that it's insane how most older E! shows can't be easily found on the internet, but some people have directed him towards links to episodes of the short-lived NBC sitcom Emeril!
    • It's also invoked in "Top 10 Worst Commercials", in which the infamous HeadOn commercial gives him bad memories of a NicoDerm radio ad that's hard to find, but simply was just the words "NicoDerm, it's a patch!" repeated over and over again. He says that some DJs warned people when the ad was going to play, because it was that bad.
  • Losing Horns: He uses the ones from The Price Is Right as a reaction to the first joke he comes across in Baby Blues.
  • Mary Sue:invoked In his opinion, the title character of Olive, the Other Reindeer, whom he thinks does little to actually drive the plot but is celebrated as a hero. He even compares her to Tim Tebow.
  • Moral Event Horizon: In-universe, he considers Brian Griffin to have crossed this in the latter's "No-God rant" at the end of "Not All Dogs Go to Heaven".
  • Ms. Fanservice: Jeannie, naturally.
  • Never Speak Ill of the Dead: He hates it when dead people are maligned. Even as he's calling "Turnabout Intruder" incredibly sexist, he gives some leeway to Gene Roddenberry as he's not alive to defend himself.
  • New Year's Resolution: In "Happy New Year, Charlie Brown", Chris pledges to watch less bad TV. This resolution lasts for all of 10 seconds.
  • No Ending: "The Real Reality TV Review" ends with Chris brutally ranting at the viewers for seeing him as The Chew Toy and not taking his personal issues seriously, before a Smash Cut to static.
  • No Indoor Voice: When he gets frustrated, turn down your computer's volume settings. He's said that a large part of his unusually loud, nasal voice is due to Asperger Syndrome.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: He does this when summarizing his Heil Honey I'm Home! review.
  • NOT!: In reference to 66 in the 1995 Get Smart series: "She's just so cute and charming you wanna fit her in your pocket… NOT!!!"
  • "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer: In "10 Worst South Park Episodes", he does this after pointing out that one of the plot points in "A Million Little Fibers" involves Oprah Winfrey's vagina trying to take over the show.
    • Again in the Allen Gregory review, where he points out the romance between the 7-year-old title character and his 70-year-old principal.
  • Noodle Incident: Whatever happened when he snuck into the closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics. All we know is that it cost him his passport, delayed the Baby Blues review by two days, and there might be embarrassing pictures of him with Hope Solo...
  • Oh, Crap!: After Hewy Toonmore learns that Chris is watching The Groovenians...
    Chris: You're too late.
    Hewy: You poor, unfortunate bastard.
  • Older Than They Look: He's actually in his early 40s and older than Doug Walker. It's easier to tell when takes off his hat and visible balding is present.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: He tries to open the For Better or for Worse review with a Canadian accent, but it ends up sounding more German. "Yeah, I'll stop before I piss off my Canadian fanbase!"
  • Otaku: Rowdy's one for television. Unusually, he's also a big sports fan.
  • Precision F-Strike: Closest thing to swearing that he has EVER done in TV Trash is the occasional use of the word "Asshole". At the end of his "Not All Dogs Go to Heaven" review, after tearing into Seth MacFarlane, he says "See you (bleeped) next time on TV trash!"
    • He often substitutes the F-bomb for "Frak" ("WHAT THE FRAK IS THIS", "Top Ten Frak-Ups".)
    • When the PO'd Pizza Guy shows up, a couple of (bleeped) swears are heard.
    • On his Twitter, he pulled an out-of-character one as he called the December 2014 cancellation of Team America screenings (which would take the place of the cancelled movie The Interview) "fucking ridiculous".
    • At the beginning of his "Adventures of Electra Elf" video, he stares at the DVD in disbelief before going "What the Faaaaaaaa-" before cutting to the opening.
    • In his "Malcolm's Graduation" review, after beginning a rant at Malcolm's mother for what she said to Malcolm in the previous scene about needing to suffer (Don't take it out of context), Rowdy starts off calmly about comparing her to other people who annoyed him in the past (Lucy Van Pelt, Allen Gregory, etc) until he reaches his breaking point.
    Chris: You conniving, selfish, backstabbing, manipulative, PURE EVIL MOTHER-
    (It then cuts to a scene of The Simpsons with Flanders reacting to what Rowdy had said)
    Flanders: Dear lord! That was the loudest profanity I've ever heard...
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: On the aforementioned "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer in Allen Gregory: "WHO! WOULD! THINK! THIS! IS! FUNNY!"
  • Rage Quit: He usually manages to get through whatever he has to review, no matter how bad it is or angry it makes him, but Allen Gregory forces him to give up after 4 episodes after it makes him apologize for three previous reviews.
  • Questionable Casting:invoked Frank Welker doing the voice of Garfield in his review of The Garfield Show. He points out that Lorenzo Music is a Tough Act to Followinvoked, due to being able to have the right mix of lethargy and Deadpan Snarker in his inflections to nail Garfield. As skilled as Frank is, he can't pull it off well, resulting in his performance sounding just plain lethargic.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: In his Candid With Chris video where he lists the five reviews he hopes The Nostalgia Critic will do, he's wearing a T-shirt designed after the Pink Ranger suit with Kimberly's face in the middle.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Rowdy delivers an epic one to "Seth MacFarlane" at the end of "Family Guy Month".
    • He also blasts one to the heads of Saban in his review of Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation.
    • His review of "Road to the Multiverse" is one long at Seth. constantly calling him out for his historically inaccurate universes.
    • He tears into One Million Moms and ABC for their treatment of GCB.
    • "The Real Reality TV Review" is one 25-minute long one to reality TV and why it sucks so much, people doing despicable things simply to get money, etc.
    • He lays into Lois from Malcolm in the Middle for her manipulating Malcolm into becoming president in order to fix the problems of people like her, because he feels that she doesn't take responsibility for her own problems.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: Notes this trend in 80's cartoons and jokingly notes that the Ninja Turtles were breaking ground in defying this stereotype.
  • Running Gag: As far back as his first episode, Rowdy has made fun of Pamela Anderson.
  • Sarcasm Failure: Most of Brickleberry defies comment in his mind, so he spends most of the episode just making faces at the "jokes".
    Rowdy: (catatonic) Yeah, get used to this, people. I get a feeling that a lot of these "jokes" are beyond commenting on and I'll just have to respond with facial expressions.
  • The Scrappy: In-Universe. In all of his Ninja Turtle-related videos, he makes it clear how much he does not like Venus De Milo.
    • He also shows that he doesn't like the Hanna-Barbera sidekick characters like Fangpuss, Baboo, and of course Scrappy.
    • He also LOATHES Lucy Van Pelt and Elmyra Duff.
    • Of course he finds, Allen Gregory blows all of these out of the water.
    • This was eventually trumped by Lois from Malcolm in the Middle who he says makes Lucy Van Pelt,
Gary the Rat, the aforementioned Allen Gregory and the entire cast of Brickleberry look like saints in comparison.
  • Screwed by the Network:invoked Discussed in "10 Most Screwed Over Shows".
  • Self-Deprecation: In "Happy New Year Charlie Brown", he remarks that Charlie Brown was his inspiration for dating, and declares that he will "die alone".
    • "I'm the Rowdy Reviewer and I remember it, because I have no life!"
    • In his review of Sonic Underground, he points out that Jaleel White voices Sonic, his brother Manic, and his sister Sonia.
      Chris: Urkel times three. That might be enough to make MY voice tolerable by comparison.
  • Sequelitis:invoked In his opinion, Home Alone was "too standalone" to require one sequel, much less four (the latter two being made-for-TV movies with none of the original cast).
  • Shameless Self-Promotion: He plugs his novel in one of his reviews.
  • Shared Universe: Because of crossovers and cameos, he's part of the Reviewaverse.
  • Shout-Out: He dresses in a tie and a coat for his review of Homeboys in Outer Space, and declares that he will remember it because he "has no life".
    • He does the Sekirei review in the style of The Cartoon Hero As an April Fools' Day joke in 2014. A week later the Cartoon Hero returned the favor as part of a similar set of review below.
      • He takes this even further as he does a set of reviews in the style of other reviewers.
  • Shown Their Work: He goes into detail over the histories of TV shows.
  • Signing-Off Catchphrase: In his "Candid with Chris" videos: "Stay rowdy, my friends."
  • Soapbox Sadie:
    • Perkins and Cecil will take anything about cats that's not completely positive and complain about it. They even hijacked the show to review Tom and Jerry, which they argued was anti-cat.
    • Perkins and Cecil have stopped as stated in the review of Mr. Pickles due to discovering the Felinists of Tumblr.
  • Suckiness Is Painful: He is DISTURBED by the events in The Groovenians and Heil Honey I'm Home!. The latter sent him into a depression.
  • Take That!: Primarily toward Football (which he considers too harsh), Veronica Mars (he did a review of it), and NBC (which caused ALF to be Screwed by the Network out of a conclusion, which angered Chris so much, he refuses to watch NBC.)
    • In "Road To The Multiverse" (also telling that he is a Mavericks fan, who faced off the Miami Heat)
      "I should end this review right now, but unlike the Miami Heat, I don't quit in the fourth quarter!"
    • "It's just like switching between MSNBC and Fox News. Eventually you find out they're both full of crap!"
    • From the end of his Electra Woman and Dyna Girl review:
      Chris: So where did you send her to?
      Jeannie: A far off place devoid of life and civilization!
      Chris: So, New Jersey? (Jeannie nods) Yeah, Oklahoma's not far enough!
    • In the Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures review, he states that morons can be entertaining, going on to suggest either Dumb and Dumber or "any presidential debate".
    • In Denver the Last Dinosaur, regarding a plot where the villains get on a game show, but their attempts to cheat by having answers piped into them via a wizard hat are thwarted, leading to them giving hilariously incorrect answers: "And yet they still came off as smarter than half the contestants I've seen on Wheel of Fortune."
  • Tempting Fate: Oh, yes. He does this quite a lot.
    • He once calls his sister and asks her to put "He tempted fate." on his tombstone.
    • From the Cop Rock review:
      Chris: The only thing that I can think of that could be worse would be a sit-com about Adolf Hitler! Let's hope there's nothing like THAT around!
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:invoked He admits that, while Baby Blues does have its high points — in particular, he finds The Bittermans relatively funny and some of the writing creative — he still considers it an awful adaptation of the source material for how little it has in common as far as characterization, tone, and plot. In his opinion, it would've been quite good had they just replaced the MacPhersons with another family and called it something else.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: At the beginning of "Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers":
    Caption: Oh yeah. THIS song is a great way to start.
    • And, at the beginning of Heil Honey I'm Home!, after seeing the opening credits, he simply puts the NES gun to his head.
    • In the Brickleberry review, he begins with his head in his hands, exclaiming that it's the worst animated show ever.
  • To Be Continued: At the end of his 100th episode (Ally McBeal).
  • Understatement: After chewing out the Saban Executives in his review of Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, he says "So, yeah. I'm not thrilled".
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic:invoked His opinion of Irving, who he mentioned that while being portrayed as someone who's not there for Cathy, he mentions what he has given up to support their relationship.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:invoked Contrast to Cathy, who he sees most of her whining about her misfortunes as wangst in comparison to Dilbert, who just takes his misfortunes in stride.
  • A Very Special Episode: He does a special to talk about Brian's Death and how wrong it is wish death on anyone, even if they are fictional.
    • His review of The Day After is one of these as well. There are almost no jokes in the entire review, and Chris is much more subdued—a fitting reaction to the film and its content.
    • His review of Cyberbu//y (2011) contains a similar serious tone as it's story is loosely based on a real life tragedy.
  • Voice of Reason: On a few occasions, he has pointed out he is not of the belief that Disney should just make animated shows, going on to defend Hannah Montana and High School Musical, while pointing out that Disney has made several bad animated shows.
  • Waxing Lyrical: After a character in The Groovenians says "Tomorrow is another day", he follows it up with "And I'm thirsty anyway, so bring on the rain".
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Pretty much the entire Veronica Mars review has him do this to the main character being made out to be a hero while she willing to things like steal evidence just to make get back at people.
    • He also gives one to anyone who wishes death on The Scrappyinvoked characters and the creators of Family Guy for how poorly they handled Brian's death.
  • Wham Episode: "The REAL Reality TV Review". Reviewing all of those reality shows pushed Rowdy over the edge. In actuality, he was taken over by Murky, a being unwittingly released by Professor Stupidiot.
  • Wham Line: During his fight with Malicia when she tries to use Jeannie to kill him, he responds "I freed Jeannie years ago". Cue Oh, Crap! look on her face.

The PO'd Pizza Guy gives examples of these tropes:

  • Alter-Ego Acting: Chris is MUCH nicer than the PO'd Pizza Guy.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: In his brief appearance in the Fangface Review, he drops a few swear words... all bleeped.
  • Jerkass: The first episode quickly shows that he REALLY has some issues. It's also telling that Chris Moore almost NEVER uses vulgar humor in TV Trash, yet it is ABUNDANT with the PO'd Pizza Guy.
  • Precision F-Strike: He's one of the few characters on the site to openly swear.
  • Take That!: Episode 4 has him going after Digiorno.
