Miranda Sings
, also known by the username MirandaSings08, is a collection of So Bad, It's Good singing videos on YouTube. The character Miranda is known for her below-average abilities and above-average opinion of said abilities, self-invoked Protection from Editors, and a constant ring of extremely red lipstick. In addition to her music ("music") channel, Miranda has a vlog channel and a Netflix spinoff series, Haters Back Off.
Miranda is a pastiche of similarly untalented girls, and is created and portrayed by Colleen Ballinger. Colleen posts as herself at a third channel, PsychoSoprano, where she occasionally does split-screen duets with Miranda.
This work contains examples of:
- Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: Miranda has a tendency to put too much emphasis on letters in the middle of words ("Singer" becomes "Sing-G-er"), and most 'T' sounds ("Button" becomes "BuTTon", "GeT OuT", etc.). Taken in conjunction with her frequent mangled words and nasal voice, it can make her sound like she's from somewhere you've probably never heard of.
- Barbie Doll Anatomy: When she receives a shirtless Ken doll for Christmas, she complains about it being porn...but declares it a ripoff when she takes off his pants and sees the lack of features underneath.
- Bowdlerise: Miranda created her own version of twerking that was not as "porn" as the original one.
- Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: In "Sin the Bottle" with Mamrie Hart, she eventually agrees to confess a sin, which turns out to be an anticlimactic result to a pathetic attempt at revenge. After Mamrie asks her why she thought it was bad, she says, "I don't know...I kicked a dog on the way out, though." Mamrie says she should have used that to confess instead.
- The Cameo: She appears in an episode of Victorious and played Pictionary in The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Seinfeld and Martin Short. She also briefly appears in Ralph Breaks the Internet, where her internet connection is severed by the title character.*
- Character Catchphrase:
- Miranda always introduces herself by saying "Hey guys, it's me, Miranda..."
- When encountering negative feedback Miranda yells "HATERS BACK OFF!!!". So much so that it became the title for her series.
- When she gets confused or frustrated at another person or thing she says "ARE YOU KEEDING ME?!!" WHAT THE EVEN HECK?!?!
- Celebrity Impersonator: She says this is one of her many talents, and in the list of famous people she includes herself.
- The Comically Serious: She doesn't have a grasp on humor and is never seen laughing (if she is, it's a character break), which adds to her overall strangeness.
- Covert Pervert: While she claims to be very religious and pure, she clearly contradicts this mentality on a few occasions, and frequently alludes to a very non-Christian relationship with her Uncle.Miranda: (during Not my Arms challenge with Joey Graceffa brushing her teeth) I don't even let my Uncle go that deep!
- Dirty Old Man: All we can assume of her never seen Uncle, considering he does her dance choreography and design her costumes, owns Kinky Cuffs, was Miranda's first kiss...
- Early-Installment Weirdness: As evidenced by this videos, the original Miranda (from 2008) bears no resemblance at all to the Miranda of 2015 (EVEN the lisstick]]).
- Embarrassing Animal Suit: Given the lack of a wolf costume, difficult to make, Miranda chose to reuse her last year's Halloween costume, a dog suit that she made herself, for her version of Shakira's "She Wolf".
- Flanderization: Early videos like her "Free Voice Lesson" are more or less indistinguishable from a thousand Small Name, Big Ego personalities on Youtube. By her cover of "Starships" by Nicki Minaj, she's closer to a Tim & Eric character.
- Much of the exaggerations to Miranda's character were inspired by hate mail from the Haters; they attacked her lipstick, so she just added more. They called her dancing awkward, and...you get the idea.
- Fourth-Wall Mail Slot: At the end of most videos, she does "Fan and Hate Mail of the Day" where she reads positive and mean comments left on her videos.
- Freak Out: Happens on occasion.
- The Fundamentalist: She's very religious, and believes that people who watch The Hunger Games and Harry Potter are sinners who are going to hell. Also, any woman who dresses revealingly is "porn".
- Gasshole: Miranda shares this with her actress Colleen. Miranda/Colleen burps in more videos than she doesn't, usually loudly. Audible farting is not uncommon, either.
- Gosh Dang It to Heck!: Miranda doesn't say bad words because she would become then a sinner.
- Hatedom: Discussed. She dedicates a lot of segments, complete videos and songs to respond to the negative messages directed to her. According to Miranda, anyone start to being part of it if says something adverse about her talent or appearance, and includes even Elmo (see "Sesame Street" Cred) and SOPA.
- Hates Being Touched: Miranda often tells people not to touch her, and even did so during a video about kissing.
- Hypocritical Humor: Miranda says of people who dislike her that they're "very rude", but she's very prone to burp and fart unapologeTically.
- Insufferable Genius: Miranda thinks she's the latter, which is highly debatable. The former, however, is indisputable.
- Inherited Illiteracy Title: The in-character self-help book Selp Helf, where aside from the title, the text is hand-written and full of spelling and grammar errors.
- Insistent Terminology: Anything she considers inappropriate is "porn", and any strong food she hates is "spicy".
- The Internet Is for Porn: In one vlog, she describes her first experience with "porn". It turns out, she has a very loose definition of "porn" that includes revealing outfits worn publicly by Miley Cyrus, and even women who wear revealing swimwear to the beach.
- Limited Wardrobe: Always wears plaid button-up shirts (Stolen from her Uncle) and bright-red lipstick (Stolen from her Mother). Anything more revealing is considered "Porn".
- Messy Hair: Sometimes, she appears on camera with unkempt hair and don't even wash it every day, because, in his words, doing it can break it off.
- Moral Guardians: Miranda herself is very prudish. She believes that anything remotely sexual is "porn" and inappropriate for anyone under 21.
- Poe's Law: Especially early on, Miranda so uncannily evoked typical Attention Whore YouTube users most everyone thought she was serious. Some still do.
- Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure:
- She doesn't know what Coachella is.
- When a fan asked her to cover the Mario´s theme song, she ended humming instead the Star Wars theme and Hanson's "MMMBop".

- Running Gag:
- One of them is incredibly long-winded statements or questions that are completely vague, leaving the recipient with no possible answer.
- Her complete inability to properly pronounce Joey Graceffa's last name. She's only done it one, and that was a complete accident.
- School Idol: Miranda was the most popular girl in her school thanks to being homeschooled, therefore she was the most admired student by the student body, consisting of herself.
- Serious Business: Miranda was involved in a rap battle over makeup, against Colleen Evans, no less.
- "Sesame Street" Cred: Parodied when Miranda appear besides Elmo, but it is thanks to the magic of the chroma key. She even call him a hater.
- Sound-Effect Bleep: She provide this sounds when is reading out loud the curse words the haters leave to her; unfortunately the censorship is not in full effect because the curse words remain intact in the messages displayed on screen.
- What the Hell Is That Accent?:
- Her idiosyncratic use of syllable stress ('T' sounds in the middle of words are over-emphasized) and oft-mangled words (Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" is pronounced "Anna-coon-da", "Bad" sometimes becomes "Byehd", "What" sounds more like "Whet", etc.) can give this impression. It's taken up to eleven when she's upset; in the aforementioned Freak Out videos, she comes to sound almost Jamaican...
- Lampshaded here, where, despite her unusual accent, she insists that she is "Emerigan".
