The Nightmare Project was a website that ran from 1997 to 2002 whose goal was to catalog the "darkest recesses of the human psyche." Individuals could submit their nightmares to the site for others to read, and others to analyze and comment on. For the years that it was active, the site provided a prime source of literal Nightmare Fuel.

In 2010, a partial restoration of the site was created by a devoted fan, titled the Nightmare Archive. Some of the nightmares from the old site were reposted, and new ones added. Commenting on has been disabled on the new site however.

This site provides examples of:

  • Afterlife Express: The Transarmageddon Railroad transports the dead across a world devastated by nuclear war.
  • Bears Are Bad News: The dream "Unspeakable Things" has the dreamer pursued by a bear with metal skin through a Lethal Lava Land.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: In the dream "Unspeakable Things," the dreamer holds a gun, prepared to kill himself rather than let the monster do horrible things to him.
  • BFS: The sword the "angel" carries in "Unforgiving Visitor."
  • Black Eyes of Evil: The nightmare "Whispers in the Dark."
  • The Blank: The visitor in "Unusual Visitor" has eyes, horns but no face.
  • Burn the Witch!: In the nightmare "Witch's Revenge," the dreamer's wife was raped and then burned by an angry mob lead by a witch-like crone.
  • Colony Drop: The nightmare "Waiting for the Wave" has a large asteroid hitting the Atlanic, causing a colossal wave to kill everyone.
  • Creepy Cathedral: In the nightmare "Waiting for the Void" the dreamer is in a strange church inhabited by groups of strange believers, animated shrines, and a void that no one seems to notice.
