Rappy the River Otter follows a cartoon, anthropomorphic otter for whom the comic strip is named. The comic strip takes place in the fictional state park: Pine Falls Park. Subjects of each weekly comic strip often focus on current events, human culture and Rappy's loose understanding of it, or general life in the park.
Rappy the River Otter has the following tropes:
- I Am Not Weasel: The main character is often mistaken for a weasel.
- Funny Background Event: Often used to show the results of a prank performed by Rappy, such as in this strip.
- Deliberately Monochrome: Even if the rest of the comic is in color, Rappy always is colored in black and white, even though most otters are actually brown.
- Selective Obliviousness: The characters who believe Rappy is a weasel continue to believe this, and seemingly can't hear or ignore Rappy when he attempts to correct them.
