In the name of maternal bond, I shall punish you!
Magical Mom is a webcomic by Prinnstar that can be read on Webtoons. It is based on a short film of the same name.

The comic focuses on a boy named Sara, whose mother is a former magical girl known as Magical Luvli. However, after an incident at school forces her to come out of retirement, she becomes known as Magical Mom and seeks to help her son become a hero as well.

The comic can be read here.

A Prequel comic before Sara was born and what Luvli career was like also found here.

This comic provides the following examples:

  • Adaptation Expansion: The plot of the original short film is included and expanded upon, including providing Magical Mom a backstory, as well as establishing her relationship with Iris. It also goes beyond the original short film by introducing the father.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Unlike the original short film, where Iris was established as being genuinely evil, the comic establishes her as being a former partner of Magical Mom who fell to evil under the belief that family made Magical Mom weak.
  • Adaptational Name Change:
    • In the original short film, Sara was actually named Daiki.
    • Unlike the original short film, where she was always known as Magical Mom, here she starts off with the alias of Magical Luvli.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Whereas Sara gets the hang of the powers in the original film straight away, he only briefly transforms to save his mom from Iris before quickly losing the powers.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Enforced. Iris pushes Magical Luvli into showing off her powers to the class knowing full well that doing so would embarrass Sara to the point of pushing her away.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: On the chapter where Mr. Shogun begins to teaching Sara about become a magical boy, he points out how he hardly had any time to talk for 18 chapters having barely had 20 lines.
  • Canon Foreigner: Mr. Shogun wasn't present anywhere in the original short film.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Sara is typically a girl's name, though Sara is established as being a boy.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mr. Shogun has a lot of sass, often berating Sara and even telling Luvli to disown him. He is ultimately a good kitty though as he is supportive of his owner and even helps Sara in becoming a magical boy.
  • Race Lift: In the original short film, Daiki and Magical Mom are implied to be Japanese. Here, they are Thai.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Unlike the original short film, where Iris is supposedly obliterated by Magical Mom and Sara, she escapes while Magical Mom and Sara are busy protecting people from a collapsing building.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Iris and Magical Luvli were once good friends. After Luvli retires to look after her family, Iris goes down a dark path and forces Luvli to come out of retirement by threatening her son.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Magical Mom is none to pleased to find out Sara attempted to use mana to avoid getting last place in a race, and she lets him know that is not okay.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Sara's father is established as being very cold and willing to use lethal methods against anything deemed evil, even if it's a kid turning into a monster.
