Jay Exci is a British YouTuber who makes videos rebutting or making criticisms of popular media.

Originally called CinemaSinsSins, the channel's initial focus was primarily on the flaws and shortcomings of CinemaSins; later, the "Cinema" was dropped to reflect its identity as a more general channel for metacriticism. Eventually, Jay changed the name of her channel to "Jay Exci's SinsSins" and then just "Jay Exci" to further emphasize this new focus, and she only makes SinsSins videos occasionally now. Now, the channel primarily analyses works from many different forms of media, with most of her recent work involving analysis and review of recent TV shows and movies, though she also critiques major YouTube trends on occasion.

She also came out as transgender in 2020 and is currently using she/they/he pronouns during her transition.

Note: Since the recursive titles of SinsSins videos tend to be quite long, this page uses the abbreviation "EWW" for "Everything Wrong With".

This series provides examples of:

• Abandoned Catchphrase:
  • Earlier videos used the phrases "This movie has X, this movie has X, and that's a sin" and "That's not a sin, it's a question" often to respond to sins simply comparing the movie being sinned to another movie and sins asking why things are the way they are respectively, but later has greatly lessened them, possibly to avoid doing the same thing that Jeremy does and relying too heavily on catchphrases.
  • Before starting the earlier episodes of EWW EWW, Jay would give a legal disclaimer stating how she is allowed to use the film footage in the video, which always ended with "Please don't sue us." Eventually, Jay ran out of ways to say this in a funny way and this part was dropped.
• Actually Pretty Funny:
  • Jay will remove sins for things that genuinely made her laugh.
  • Jay plays the one joke from The Prince that genuinely made her laugh, where Charles says he first met his mother at age 7, since it's an actual joke rather than the show's typical one-note character traits treated like they're supposed to be funny on their own. She also notes that on occasion the sheer randomness of a gag could surprise a laugh out of her.
• Bait-and-Switch Comment: In part 2 of "A Breakdown of CinemaSins: EWW Avengers: Infinity War":
  Jay: It's almost as if you're trying to make your sins sound more convincing by adding, like, fake bullshit evidence that doesn't make sense, but I wouldn't suggest that you would do something like that. Mostly because I don't think you care enough.
• Berserk Button:
  • Jay hates using iMovie (free movie editing software bundled with Macintosh computers), and isn't shy about expressing her dislike whenever she’s forced to use it.
  Jay: I swear to God, one of these days the end segment is just gonna be "Reasons iMovie Is Shit".
  • On a more analytical example, Jay hates it when people criticize a work but blatantly ignore that the work in question either explains itself or is incorrect. Several of her videos discussing other critiques of films often revolve around pointing out how the critique in question is often unwarranted because the film itself does explain it (she makes it clear that liking/disliking the explanation is entirely subjective). For example, in her response to youtuber HiTopFilms Spiderman Far From Home Broke My Heart video, she points out that HiTopFilms point about Peter Parker seemingly not to suffer consequences is incorrect and is based on his want for the film, not what actually happens.
• Blatant Lies: When bringing up Jay Exci in a debate with PSA Sitch, NoBullshit claimed that Jay had said that because of his views, NoBullshit didn't deserve a platform or the right to express his opinions. Cue Jay casually pulling up the video in question in which Jay explicitly says Brookes absolutely has the right to express his beliefs and to have a platform to do so.
• Brain Bleach: In EWW EWW Toy Story, Jay asks Jeremy to "please stop" after he begins contemplating the mechanics of toy sexuality.
• Broke the Rating Scale: In EWW EWW Batman and Robin, Jay didn't have time to edit in the Sin Counter, so instead she replaced it with a picture of Jim Carrey.
• Buffy Speak:
  Jay: Secondly, this isn't foreshadowing. It's Chekhov's Gun... ing.
• Call-Back: The Fall of Doctor Who briefly included a clip of Another Life (2019)'s "pidgeon sounds" at the end of a compilation of dumb quotes.
• The Cameo:
  • The EWW EWW Star Wars: Episode III Part 2 video is interrupted a couple of times by fellow YouTuber Th3Birdman, who also sins Cinema Sins videos on his own channel.
  • Jay returns the favor in Th3Birdman's video on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
• Catchphrase: "That is not a sin. That is a question. Jeremy must learn the difference between questions and sins".
• Clickbait Gag: Jay was quite amused to find that two different videos used the exact same clickbait thumbnail of Captain Marvel being badly photoshopped into a big crowd shot in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer.
• Comically Missing the Point:
  Jeremy: Geez, this Gotham has to be a nightmare to get around in. No wonder there's so much crime in Gotham. With a government that spends all that money on fucking statues.
  Jay: Oh, come on. It probably doesn't cost that much money to fuck a statue.
• Couch Gag: Most videos open by directing the viewer to a link where they can buy the movie being sinned; however, in some of these openings, the name of the movie is replaced on-screen with a facetious alternative.
• Damned by Faint Praise:
  • In EWW EWW Wreck-It Ralph, Jeremy suggests that Ralph would be "amazing at CinemaSins" for making what Jay feels to be a fairly simple observation that anyone could have made. Jay then agrees that actually, that probably does make Ralph sufficiently qualified.
• Dialogue Reversal: In EWW EWW Minions, Jeremy considers the movie so bad that he won't remove a sin even when the movie manages to make one decent joke. Jay takes note of this and does exactly the same thing to Jeremy a few minutes later.
• Different in Every Episode: The caption at the top changes in each video.
• Door Stopper: The Fall of Doctor Who can be considered Jay's magnum opus with its 5 hours, 14 minutes and 23 seconds of runtime.
• "Double, Double" Title
• Dude, Not Funny!: Jay always feels very guilty about sinning Cinema Wins, even in jest. In CinemaSinsSinsSins 2, she gives herself several sins in recompense.
  Past Jay: I always feel like kind of a dick when I sin Cinema Wins, because-
  Jay: Because you are a dick when you sin Cinema Wins. He's a beacon of light in this dark world, leave him alone!
• Expospeak Gag: Jay indulges in this briefly in EWW EWW Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Part 2 in response to Jeremy jokingly advertising "alien rat carcasses."
  Jay: (describing hot dogs) Miscellaneous tube-shaped animal parts! Get your tube-shaped miscellaneous animal parts here!
• Flat "What": Jay will sin a moment if Jeremy makes a sin that straight-up flies over his head.
• Freud Was Right: Jay points out in EWW EWW Alien that sinning a movie for sexual imagery isn't really justified, on the grounds that humans find it very easy to see sex organs in almost anything.
• Hoist by His Own Petard: In EWW EWW Spectre:
  Jeremy: Cheeky reference to previous Bond film is not appreciated at this point in a two-and-a-half hour film.
  [later]
  Jay: A third reference to this movie's super-long runtime is not appreciated in this almost seventeen minute sins video.
• Hypocrisy Nod: In EWW EWW Kingsman: The Secret Service, Jay sins Jeremy for recording a single line in two separate parts, after admitting that the only reason she noticed it is because she does exactly the same thing herself.
• I Hate Past Me: As a child, Jay made Minecraft videos that she now detests for their abysmal production values. An entire segment of CinemaSinsSinsSins 2 is devoted to Jay mercilessly deriding her younger self.
• Indecisive Parody: In her video "CinemaSins Videos Aren't Satire. They're Just Poorly Written", Jay calls out those who defend CinemaSins's inaccuracies on the basis of the channel being satirical, as CinemaSins makes many mistakes which cannot be obviously distinguished from legitimate criticism, thus ruining any satirical intent they may have had. She also points out that CinemaSins also call themselves critics as well, which makes the argument even more silly from her perspective.
• Jerkass Has a Point: Jay doesn't sugarcoat how much she dislikes some of Jeremy's sins, especially those that are nitpicks or compliments that are counted as sins for some reason, but this trope comes into play if Jeremy makes a legitimate point. For example: An ape talking to Caesar via sign language in War for the Planet of the Apes while Caesar isn't even looking at him. Both Jay and Jeremy consider this absolutely stupid.
• Last-Second Word Swap:
  Jay: This is the kind of sin where you just have to hope that the people watching aren't very familiar with the film, or don't remember it so well, because if they are, they'll realize you're just full of shi- satire.
• Mad Libs Catch Phrase:
  • "This movie had [X] in it! That movie had [X] in it! And that's a sin.", in reference to the frequent CinemaSins practice of simply namedropping movies that contain similarities to the one they're sinning.
    • Sometimes this is reduced to the more concise "This movie, that movie", particularly if Jeremy does it more than once in the same video.
  • "Jeremy's fine with [x], but if [y], that's crossing the line, dammit!"
• "No. Just… No" Reaction: From EWW EWW Wreck-It Ralph:
  Jeremy: Maybe we've got some cross-game celebrating going on here. Which I would then sin for just being more game-jumping being casually overlooked by a movie that screams about how bad game-jumping is!
  Jay: Nope.
• ...Or So I Heard:
  EWW The Doctor Who Movie: I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going.
  Jay: Oh yeah, because so much hentai has spiky head rings. [beat] Not that I would know.
• Overly Long Gag:
  • Pointing out, at some length, all of the guards and security measures that Jeremy overlooked in Thor.
  • The "salad plates" sketch in EWW EWW Frozen.
  • Explaining the difference between fiction and non-fiction in EWW EWW Moana.
  • The long skit of Yoda having absurd conversations with Mace Windu that first came up in EWW EWW Attack of the Clones, but has since appeared in other videos. It also gets longer with every appearance.
• Pet-Peeve Trope: As repeatedly demonstrated in her various "X is painfully unfunny" videos, Jay cannot stand flagrant overuse of the Instantly Proven Wrong, Hypocritical Humor, Butt-Monkey and Gross-Out Show tropes that lesser Animated Shock Comedy shows rely on so heavily, since after a certain point the subversive part of the "subversive humor" inherent in these tropes evaporates if every single joke is "Character does their character trait", "character says one thing but the opposite happens", "character says what is about to happen verbatim", " random gross thing happens" or "punching-bag character is mocked or the subject of violence for no reason". In "The Painful Tale of Farzar", she goes on an elaborate diatribe about how in order for shock comedy to work, the comedy has to be both unexpected and escalate the situation in a believable way(citing Fresh Meat as an example of a show that does this well), whereas Farzar has random edgy and disgusting things happen without setting them up first, resulting in all of its jokes falling flat in her eyes.
• The Points Mean Nothing: Sins scores are meaningless as a rule, but in EWW EWW Batman and Robin, Jay specifically points this out, and also notes that she replaced the sin counter with a picture of Jim Carrey anyway, which makes the scores even less meaningful than usual.
• Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud: In EWW EWW Frozen, while reading a sin submitted in a YouTube comment:
  Jay: Actually I don't think it would be that hard to sleep in a room as dark as this from where Elsa is. It doesn't really look like the light out the window is incredibly Read more. Fuck.
• Running Gag:
  • It's a CinemaSins staple to create their title card by overlaying the words "Everything Wrong With" on top of the opening titles of the movie they're sinning; however, due to variations in movie title placement, it's not always possible to overlay the wording in a standard reading order. Whenever this happens, Jay always sins the resulting word salad.
  • Well Tom, that's the joke!- Played whenever Rule of Funny is sinned in a video. In EWW Minions, this happens so often that Jay starts adding various filters onto the clip until it becomes a garbled mess.
• Sarcasm Mode: The channel basically runs on it. This probably shouldn't be too surprising.
  • When Jeremy bases a sin on particularly stupid logic, Jay will often spin out an exaggerated scenario to highlight how absurd it is.
• Self-Deprecation: Lots and lots of it, especially in the CinemaSinsSinsSins specials.
• Shaped Like Itself:
  Jeremy: So, what exactly is the distinction in Minions-world between the one-eyed, and the two-eyed?
  Jay: Number of eyes.
• Shout-Out: Jay briefly channels VSauce in "Dissecting A Terrible Click-bait Video About Avengers: Infinity War".
• Sock Puppet: Although most of the comments on Jay's negative review of the Game of Thrones browser game are positive and do not try to defend the game, 4 days after releasing the video she encountered a small group of commenters who all speak the game's praises. Curiously, all these commenters have names written in Cyrillic, speak in similar broken English, and always describe the game as "The officially licensed browser game" or similar. Hmmm...
• Subverted Catchphrase:
  • In EWW EWW Star Wars: Episode III Part 1, Jay begins her usual "this movie, that movie" gag, but then realizes that she’s never actually seen the movie Jeremy is referencing.
  • In EWW EWW Ready Player One, Jeremy states that he is asking a question about Wade's DeLorean, but said question includes something which is just an opinion and thus basically a sin. Surprised by this, Jay inverts her usual catchphrase involving questions and sins into "That's not a question. It's a sin. Jeremy must learn the difference between questions and sins." She immediately lampshades it, admitting that she never imagined using it that way around.
• Subverted Punchline: In EWW EWW Despicable Me 2.
  Jeremy: Definitely gonna remove a sin for this dope Pharrell track, but it also reminds me that this song lost the Oscar to "Let It Go" that year. "Let It Go"! "Let It Go"?!
  Jay: Wow, Jeremy, you really seem to be holding a grudge against that one song. You know, I think you should really just learn to... not do that.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial:
  Jay: You may notice that today's end segment is in black-and-white. Now, I can assure you, this is because I am a pretentious hipster twat, and not because I'm trying to hide the big red mark on my face that I got from walking into a shelf.
• That Came Out Wrong:
  Jay: ...this is one of the most powerful X-Men, and to see him struggle with something as simple as going to the toilet goes an amazingly long way to show us how far his situation has declined. So you can say "ewww, gross" all you want, but I say: bring on the pee.
  [beat]
  Er, I'd like to request formally that no-one takes that audio clip out of context, please? Please.
• Trivially Obvious:
  Jay: Passengers was definitely... a film.
• Voodoo Shark: Parodied in The Rise of Skywalker is an Embarrassment, where various guests spontaneously interrupt a confused Jay out of nowhere, with only MauLer and JLongBone offering explanations that only apply to them and nobody else.
• Watsonian vs. Doylist: In EWW EWW Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Part 1:
  Jeremy: Hey, remember when you watched the original trilogy and you thought, "Man, if I could believe in the Force, I could be a Jedi!." Well, turns out Jedi creation depends on whether or not you have a lot of something really dumb called "midichlorians" in your bloodstream.
  Jay: Also, you know, you can't be a Jedi because the Force is fictional. That's a very important thing to take into consideration here.
• You Answered Your Own Question: Jay often points out that for many of Jeremy's question-based sins, Jeremy brings up counter-points within the sin which are perfectly logical answers to his questions, thus making the sin unnecessary.
