First try idiot!
SimpleFlips is the username and channel name of a streamer who specializes in Super Mario 64 ROM hacks as well as Super Mario Maker and its sequel. As a seasoned speedrunner, he uses a casual style during his streams.

His YouTube channel is here. He streams here and uploads full clips here.

SimpleFlips' videos contain examples of:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Simple once took a shortcut on a slide and ended up accidentally spawning a star. Couldn't have been easier, indeed.
  • Artifact Title: Well, more like "Artifact Name." SimpleFlips used to be a Tetris streamer, before moving on to playing Super Mario 64. However, whenever he plays Tetris, he shows that he still hasn't lost any of his skill.
  • Big "NO!": In "The Ultimate Boss" and "What's Hell In A Rom Hack?," Simple wonders where to go next and realizes too late that he'd left Mario standing on a warp.
Simple: I didn't mean to warp to Fuckville, population just me!
  • Big "WHAT?!": Happens too many times to count.
  • Body Horror: During the Mario Party 4 "Coffin Time" stream, the fingers on Mario's right hand appear stretched for a bit.
  • Bootstrapped Theme: His outro theme is actually "Let's Get Fluffy!", the Nimbus Land music from Super Mario RPG.
  • Buffy Speak:
    • Part of Simple's reaction to hearing "1, 2, Oatmeal" for the first time was him describing it as being "translated from the Germany language."
    • Also, from "The Sniffit:"
Simple: I feel like I've never heard that. Or maybe I'm—maybe my brain is just... unbraining for a while.
  • Butt-Monkey: Simple tends to bring this on himself, what with the myriad of stupid "song" donations.
  • By "No", I Mean "Yes": Preparing to complete one last uncleared SMM2 level for the day, Simple chooses one made by a Japanese player and regrets it.
Simple: This level with all the different characters? I'm down, Toki.
[Simple finds himself in the middle of a kaizo level and dies one second after it begins]
Simple:...Okay, so when I said "I'm down, Toki," I actually meant "this is the end of the video." [laughs]
  • The Corruption: Multiple times, Simple has played "Super Mario 64: Chaos Edition," an SM64 ROM hack that injects a random code into the game every so often. Effects range from "tornadoes" of objects that gravitate towards Mario, random cap effects, and the music notes being replaced with Mario's grunts.
  • Couch Gag: The first few videos of his "Troll Hacks" series contained an animated intro with him long-jumping face-first into an invisible wall while trying to get a star. Later videos lampshaded the repetitiveness of the intro, with one video having animated Simple explode when he hits the invisible wall. Not to mention the unique "Simple vs. Twitch Chat" intro, which had him frozen in place while the star was exploded out of existence via chat commands.
  • Credits Gag:
  • Cue Card Pause: A text-to-speech donation threatened that if Simple didn't fasten his BUP poster that the donator would "take a bullet... train to your house and toss your salad."
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: When Simple plays a ROM hack by Kaze Emanuar, chances are there's a custom gameplay mechanic that gets in the way when Simple tries to use his traditional SM64 play style.
  • Determinator: Simple is known to go on various quests for hubris, even if it's much harder and takes him far, far longer than would be needed for the regular route.
  • Disappeared Dad: A common joke among the community is that Simple is everyone's dad, but he left so he could stream Mario games.
  • Double Entendre:
Simple: I want the snowman to blow me so hard.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Up until the first part of his 120-star SM64 Chaos Edition stream in 2014, Simple had never shown his face.
  • Exact Words: Since "Another Mario Adventure 64" was his first stream on YouTube, Simple claimed during stream that, assuming the day on which he streamed was a "starting date," he'd "streamed every single day on YouTube since [his] very first"—which is to say, one day.
    • There are also these:
Simple: He's not actually my man. Like, I'm not capable of owning any humans after... after that Abe Lincoln shit.
Simple: Earth is over thousands of years old, dumbass. [reads reply] "More like billions." Imagine this guy is trying to correct me when I said, "Earth is over a thousand years old." Like, as if my sentence could ever be wrong. Which it's not. Earth is over a thousand years old.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In "The Bomb," Simple backwards long jumps to a small island in the corner of a Minecraft-styled map where an ore block sits. Thinking nothing of it, he exits the level... only to have someone in chat tell him to "punch it." Cue an audible Facepalm. Turns out the block can't be broken.
Simple: Fuck! I fell—I fell victim to idiots! I came over here twice...
    Guest Starring
    GAY IDIOT
    as The Might Plumber
  • Freudian Slip:
Simple: There are no 8 red coins around that tree, and by "8 red coins," I mean, 8... yellow coins.
  • Full-Frontal Assault: Say hello to "BLJ the Bup's Cock."
  • Gaslighting: If Simple has the opportunity to, he invokes this purely for comedy.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Simpleflips, and all his friends, operate entirely on this in Trouble in Terrorist Town.
Simple: I'm not gonna shoot you, I'm Inno! (Stabs Alphappy with a knife he got from the traitor earlier.)
Someone: Simple why'd you knife him?
    Simple: I didn't shoot him!
Someone: True! Alright you can live.
  • Hell Is That Noise: Simple's old donation alert.
Simple: We got money, Foxen! Can ya believe it? AAAAAGH!!!
  • Hope Spot: In "I FOUND IT," thanks to a wall blocking his view, Simple falls, but manages to walljump back up. He slips again, this time right up against the wall so that he can't climb it.
  • Joke and Receive:
Simple: [on a toad suspended in midair] Am I an idiot for thinking throwing a Bob-omb at this toad is a solution?
    • "Is this Gay Baby Jail?"
    • From "I FOUND IT":
Simple: INB4 I get invisible walled and can't get up there. Somehow...
      [not long after]
Simple: No! Why was there an invisible wall on one side, but not the other?!
  • Just a Stupid Accent: "I'm gonna game ohh-va!"
  • Kansas City Shuffle:
Simple: It might be down here. I think it was down here.
Simple: [sees a small platform at the bottom of a large drop] Yeahhh. Tried to pull one over on ol' SimpleFlips, you know.
    [there is nothing there]
Simple: Why is— He— he— he— he got me. Put a random platform down so I go and land on it. Cool.
  • Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: The term "gay baby jail," used to refer to softlocks—it was created by a fan, and Simple found it funny enough to adopt it. Later in the same video, he got GBJ'd in a phallic level—twice.
Simple: I softlocked into this dude's soft cock, dude!
  • Mind-Control Music: Invoked by Simple after hearing the cheers of "say yay!" in Camellia's remix of "Hello Happiness" by P*Light.
Simple: "Say yay"?... Watch how this one song ruined your Twitch chat forever. Streamers hate this song. Find out why.
  • Mirthless Laughter: From "Damage Boxes":
Simple: [laughs] It couldn't just be as simple as fuckin' getting the star. Nope. Why would it ever? Why?!
  • My Eyes Are Up Here: Lampshaded in "First-Person Mario 64," when Mario's view is locked onto the racing penguin's lower body.
  • Noodle Incident: After falling victim to a cauldron of soup, Simple recalls that the last time he "got souped" was in October of 2016.
  • Not What It Looks Like: From "Gay Baby Jail 64" (NSFW warning). The star also happens to be called "In His A." This isn't the first time a ROM hack that Simple played has had blatant Ass Shoves in it.
Simple: Welp, I really enjoyed being a Twitch streamer before I did this shit and got banned forever.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Simple has made it clear that he's not the biggest fan of suicidal characters in a ROM hack.
  • Orphaned Setup:
Simple: Why didn't the skeleton go to the prom? He was gayyy!note  [rimshot]
Simple: I don't actually remember the punchline to that joke.
  • Overly Long Gag: In "Super Mario 3D World but Everyone's Griefing", Mark takes a side path in a clear pipe that gives some extra coins and then loops back to the main route. Then he takes it again, and again, and again... while Roanin begs for him to stop, but Simple comments that if he does it for long enough, it becomes funny again.
  • P.O.V. Cam: As seen in "What Mario Sees During A Speedrun." Triple-jump somersaults and hammer-throwing Bowser are, unsurprisingly, rather dizzying.
  • Real Trailer, Fake Movie: Tales from Gay Baby Jail: Oatmeal's Revenge.
  • Rule of Three: "No, no, yes! Nooo... yesss! Fuckin' stop!"
  • Running Gag:
    • Whenever there's a competition hack video with an animated intro, chances are it'll include Simple saying "bruh."
    • "Nathaniel 'Scuttlebug' Bandy every time," debuting in "The Perfect Wallkicks."
    • The coveted "baseball minigame" in games such as Tetris, Pac-Man World, and Trouble in Terrorist Town.
  • Scatting: Done by Simple over a copyrighted song to avoid getting Content ID'd. It works.
  • Self-Deprecation: In response to a donor's commentary:
GayHarambe, via donation: simple flips more like false father fuckboy flips
Simple: What?! I hate when people call me my full name.
  • Sensory Abuse: Has happened here and there on stream. In highlights videos, however, there's no change in volume, just distorted audio and Screen Shake.
  • Shout-Out: "Shoutouts to Simpleflips" jokes aside, Simple himself has shouted out Nathaniel Bandy and Vinesauce Joel, among others.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Good lord is he. This trait of his only seems to propagate itself in the presence of his friends who are all equally vulgar.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Invoked. Simple will jokingly refer to himself as having an IQ of 200. In the same vein, whenever he performs an unaccounted-for clutch move, it's "Speedrunners hate him!"
  • Stop, or I Shoot Myself!: Subverted, thanks to text-to-speech.
effectator, via donation: simple fucking flips if you dont give my BUP boy some proper adhesive i will take a bullet [text-to-speech pauses]
Simple: Okay, that's a bit extreme—
effectator: [text-to-speech continues] train to your house and toss your salad
    • Nickireda (better known as AutisticYui) perfectly replicates the donation message, as seen in "I Have An Idea."
  • Sunk Cost Fallacy: Mentioned by Simple on many occasions, though he pronounces fallacy as "Fallacky".
  • Talk About the Weather: During Simple's first Chaos 3.0 stream, the "slow tornado" code causes Mario to repeatedly warp in and out of a pipe for quite some time. Simple then asks how his chat is doing.
  • Tempting Fate: Any time Simple compliments a hack or his current circumstances, things tend to go south almost immediately after. Or do they?
    Foxen: Imagine dying in this.
Simple: I'll fuckin' eat my own dick if that happens.
[The game freezes for a split second and Simple finds that Mario has touched an enemy and died.]
    Simple: AAAAAGH!!!
  • Threat Backfire:
effectator, via donation: [on Simple's Toad sticker with a sagging corner] fix the fucking BUP on the wall before my clit explodes
Simple: [peels the sticker down further] Thank you for the bits. Good luck on the... clit explosion.
  • Time for Plan B: "Fuck, you know what? I've got a better idea."
  • Too Dumb to Live: After completing a speedrun, Simple (being a speedrunner who does "cool dumb shit") decides to jump-dive towards the star with one segment of HP left. He predictably misses, causing Mario to die of fall damage.
  • Troll: At the beginning of "Downfall of the Mighty Plumber," Simple trolls Foxen with a hidden song request. He initially blames Winamp until Simple comes clean.
  • Unwinnable: Better known to Simple and his viewers as Gay Baby Jail, it generally comes in one of two flavours.
    • Unwinnable Joke Game: The Guitar Hero-themed music hack competition entry had an entire level dedicated to GBJ, featuring traps such as a warp pipe that leads into itself (causing Mario to repeatedly jump in and out of it) and a painting that, if entered, ejects Mario from a Portal Pool and back into the painting (or vice versa).
  • Urban Legend of Zelda: Simple invokes this during the Tetris Plus rematch by lying about there being minigames in the aforementioned game.
  • Vagina Dentata: Simple runs into a Toad face with large vertical jaws in "Slenderman AND FNAF in Super Mario 64." Said face appears as a Jump Scare after failing a Slender-like level involving seven Bup faces.
  • Voice Clip Song:
    • Pretty much any 1, 2, Oatmeal remix wherein the original vocals have been replaced with those from another song (as opposed to just putting the 1, 2, Oatmeal vocals on an instrumental song). Examples include Mambo No. 5, All Star, and, of course, a Simpleflips cover.
    • The practice is also discussed:
Simple: If you have viewers that turn the shit you say into music, you never know what you're gonna say that gets turned into music. It could be something—entirely random, like "Yeah, we fuck almonds up." Now it's a song.
  • What's a Henway?: Simple has a knack for ligma jokes. It's gotten to the point where an unusual character name may arouse suspicion in him, as he sometimes assumes it's a setup for a ligma joke. Not only that, the act of "ligma'ing" someone is Serious Business, as he discusses here.
    • As seen in "I can't believe this hack tried to ligma me," one of the entrants in Simple's music hack competition manages to avoid said suspicion by using the title of a game to disguise a ligma joke:
Toad: The only thing I was doing today was playing the game "Sea of Thieves." What's that? You haven't heard of it!? Dude, it is so awesome! It's a game where we can Sea of Thieves nuts can fit in your mouth! HA! GOTTEM!

"Finally caught a SimpleFlips stream last night. He spent two hours reading TV Tropes and fell asleep live on stream. Great entertainer he is."
