Sidequest Party (Web Video)

Sidequest Party (or simply Sidequest) is a collaborative Youtube group consisting of Choctopus, Vernias, tgtkai, Caggmoney and TinyTaru. The channel was created near the end of 2021 and primarily focuses on Nintendo multiplayer games, though they have played other similar games. They have posted a few vlogs on the channel as well.

    Games played on the channel:

Sidequest Party provides examples of:

  • Aerith and Bob: While Rob, Tom, Casey and Danny are fairly standard names in English, Carnig (Vernias' real name) is of Armenian origin.
  • Alliterative Name:
    • Tiny's username, TinyTaru.
    • Megan has been called "MissileMeg" in this stream, referencing her Halloween costume as Bullet Bill. This makes a comeback in this stream. She has also been ironically called "Movin' Meg" in "Wii Party requires skill", as a jab towards her constant low rolls in that video.
  • Amusing Injuries: Megan, in "Wii Party U is AMAZING", ends up flinging her Wii Remote on herself while rolling her dice, prompting a PSA for players to put their wrist strap on.
  • Animal Nemesis: Played for Laughs; Choctopus and Cagg are distracted from a minigame in "We Found The BEST Wii Party Mode" due to a fly buzzing around and annoying them, leading the group to insist that it is taunting them.
  • Animated Adaptation: A discussion about animals in "Choctopus RAGES at Donkey Kong Country 2" has been adapted into a Fan Animation here.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In "Our problem with the Party Crashers", Choc starts the video as if he was addressing controversies between Sidequest and the Party Crashers, until the end where he reveals the latter was refusing to leave the former's studio.
  • Big "NO!": Megan and Casey let one out in "Don't play Wii Party with friends", after Tom shoots them in the Back Attack minigame.
    • Earlier in the same video, Meg yells a long "Noooo!" after Tom fails to roll a 4 or higher to prevent the spike ball from rolling down, sending everyone back to Casey's spot.
  • Big "WHAT?!":
  • Birthday Episode: For Tom's birthday in 2024, Sidequest streamed a modded version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
  • Blatant Lies: Downplayed. For someone who says "I'm good at video games", Cagg's track record (specifically how he plays New Super Mario Bros. and Sonic Dream Team) will prove otherwise with the amount of screwups and lack of knowledge over the most basic controls in those games. He is able to play other games more competently, however.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Tom is consistently unable to follow simple instructions because he refuses to wear his glasses. Downplayed in that he can still play the games somewhat competently.
  • Born Unlucky: Tiny always gets the worst luck during Wii Party and Wii Party U dice rolls usually ending in him getting last, especially during tiebreakers. Although, he does sometimes get the occasional win.
  • Butt-Monkey: Cagg tends to have the highest amount of continues in the New Super Mario Bros. videos due to him getting killed most of the time, whether it be to him failing platforming sections, not moving out of danger in time, getting friendly fired or being Collateral Damage. He also got made fun of for eating a burrito with a fork and knife.
    • After reading this very page in a Wii Party U video, Choctopus encourages the viewers to continue adding funny edits, especially ones that make fun of Danny.
    • Jokes have been made at Casey's expense, particularly Choc's demonization of him or jokes about Casey dying in some way (usually accompanied by Casey replying with "I would love that").
    • Megan, during Wii Party and Mario Party videos she's present in. She tends to fall behind compared to the others, usually due to misunderstanding minigame controls, getting bad rolls, or someone screwing her over. She does win in some games, though.
  • Call-Back:
  • Catchphrase: Tiny tends to say "You scum of the earth!" whenever someone does something bad to him, though there are a few cases where he said this without this being the case. There's even a compilation of him saying this on their channel.
    • Invoked in recent videos, where another member would always encourage Tiny to "say the line" when he's about to say it. Cagg outright states in a stream that they aim to get him say at least two "You scum of the earth"s.
  • Color-Coded Speech: In their YouTube shorts. Rob's text is red, Tom's is green, Cagg's is cyan, Tiny's is purple, Vernias and Megan's are pink and Adam's is yellow.
  • Compilation Re-release: Much like on Choc's own channel, videos in a series will usually be uploaded part by part with a video compiled of every part with the title of "The Complete Run" being uploaded not long after that series' conclusion.
  • Contagious Laughter:
    • In "That's enough Jackbox...", Adam wheezes upon seeing the answers to a prompt, causing everyone to explode in laughter.
    • In "We Played EVERY Mario Party Superstars Minigame, Casey laughs at Danny after the latter dies first in Hot Rope Jump. Rob soon joins in the laughter, all while telling Casey to stop as he's making him lose.
    • In "Don't play Wii Party with friends", Tom falls off the platform in Tropical Punch, leading to everyone laughing long after the minigame was done.
    • In "Wii Party U is AMAZING", Casey's wail during the Catch A Wave minigame causes him, and everyone else, to crack up to the point Rob and Danny start crying. The kicker? The sheer volume of the laughter helped Casey win the minigame.
    • In "Wii Party Corrupted Her", Megan and Casey's antics cause them, and Rob, to be in stitches for a long time.
      • The first is when Meg hears the vibrate on the Wii Remotes before Cage Chomp, causing her to snicker, which leads to Casey and Rob howling in laughter and all of them crying.
      • The second time, Meg is caught as the Sneak after the Ramped Up minigame. As she tries to explain herself, Rob and Casey start laughing at how blatant her cheating was.
  • Cool Shades:
  • Cross Player:
  • Crossover:
    • They've collaborated with the Party Crashers, another Let's Play collaborative group that Vernias is also a part of, multiple times. The first time was thanks to a real-life event that allowed both groups to meet in person, resulting in them appearing in videos on two Jackbox games, the 8-player mode of Mario Party 7 and go golfing in real life. In 2024, the Crashers (sans Brent, who watched and later joined via Discord call) appeared in their Mario Party 5 live stream, then came back again for ARMS and Bomberman.
    • In 2025, they would make a couple Among Us videos that not only featured the Party Crashers, but also the Underdogs.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • With the exception of two minigames, Choc, Casey and Danny spend the entirety of "Mario Sluggers is Unbalanced" being on the receiving end of one by the CPU player, with the game against a CPU team leading to them losing 28-3. This mostly stems from them not knowing how the game worked.
    • The Amy CPU completely trounces them in their Sonic Shuffle video. Like in Mario Super Sluggers above, this was also with them having no knowledge of the game, made worse by them setting Amy as a hard CPU in a game where The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard is prevalent.
  • Demonization: Choc often jokes about Tiny being the devil himself, much to the latter's chagrin. This even extends to the channel's subscriber emojis, as one of them is a cartoonized version of his face with devil horns on it.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • The group's earlier videos are almost exclusively online without face-to-face commentary due to them not having a studio (until "Eating every Nintendo ice cream from Cold Stone") and not having cameras for said studio (until "Mario Party but there's HORRIBLE consequences").
    • The members in the group were exclusively referred to by their nicknames before they started recording in their studio, which saw them use their real names more, sans Vernias.
    • Before Grub the Goblin (their mascot) was introduced, their channel outro used "Throwback Galaxy" from Super Mario Galaxy 2 as their background music. Since then, they've used a remix of Super Mario World's title theme.
    • The group cycled through different editors for their earlier videos, namely Addison Wiegand and Adam (Catastrofy), before sticking with David (Triqee) as their main editor.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: The group start losing their minds playing Close Knit in "Wii Party Corrupted Her" as Maria, the CPU in the game, throws and knits slower than the others. This plays well for her, as she is revealed to be the Sneak that round, with Megan being the only one being able to correctly guess.
  • Epic Fail:
    • "We played EVERY Mario Party Superstars Minigame" has the team of Danny and Tom fall massively behind in Dungeon Duos due to the latter being unable to jump on the platforms. This leads to them starting the second warp pipe section just as Casey and Rob finished inflating their balloon to win.
    • During the Rope Sling minigame in one of their ''Wii Party'' videos, Meg and Casey manage to launch themselves 3 yards (or in Meg's case, negative 3 yards) due to poor timing. When this minigame comes up in another ''Wii Party'' video, Choc makes the same mistake and travels 18 yards, but this is nothing in comparison to Tom, who somehow managed to travel negative 38 yards.
    • Tiny fails the Air Darts segment in "Wii Party U is HILARIOUS" due to misunderstanding the controls (thinking that he needed to blow the mic to shoot instead of pressing the A button), scoring zero. Meg then proceeds to do the exact same thing, leading the whole group to laugh hysterically and joke that their side of the couch is drunk.
      • Earlier in the same video, Meg fails the Cannon Blast segment as the angle she adjusted her cannon was too low, despite Danny telling her to go the other way, causing it to overshoot and scoring her zero in her roll.
    • During "Don't take gamers to a skatepark", Cagg proves his lack of certain skills transfer into skateboarding, where at one point he falls over and an edit of Sonic losing his rings plays.
    • "We let Choctopus make a Mario level" proves that Danny's peers aren't always the reason he dies in 2D Mario games as he shows the bad allegations by dying to the most stupid of ways such as a lone Wiggler, Cheep Cheeps, drowning when no threat is near and worst of all when he took 5+ tries to get past the first claw and then after getting three continuing the trend of not completing claws.
    • In "Mario Party CPUs are Too Powerful", Tom loses a duel to the CPU Daisy due to misunderstanding the controls (spinning the control stick, which changes the angle to spin Bowser instead of mashing A), causing his Bowser to shoot up like a balloon and fly a mere 12 yards compared to Daisy's 65.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Zig-Zagged and a case of Early-Installment Weirdness for the editor. Before sticking with their main editor, David, the editor has been consistently called "editor" by the group. After this, David has been referred to as "editor" in some videos (as seen here), and by his name in others (as seen here).
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • When watching the opening of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Choc questions how everyone at Peach's castle didn't notice that there was a flying airship outside the castle until Peach was kidnapped and points out that they would've at least heard it. Tom brushes this off as everyone being drunk.
    • They didn't realize that they skipped the entirety of Sparkling Waters in their New Super Mario Bros. U playthrough, due to both that and Frosted Glacier being accessible after completing Layer-Cake Desert via a split path. When multiple people left comments regarding this, Sidequest looked at their save file on the start screen and the world map seen when using a cannon, the latter of which has an entire part of the world map that they went around with no ability to fast travel to it and came to the conclusion that their comment section was baiting them.
    • In this short, Vernias doesn't realize there was a wrapper over the Reese's Cup until he bites into it.
    • During their 2023 Secret Santa, Tom thought the character select screen in Dead or Alive 2 was mirrored, leading him to think there were only six characters in the game, rather than 12 already-unlocked ones.
    • In "wii party is stupid", Casey doesn't use the 6 he stole from Tom to move further towards the Hot Spots because he thought the train cards were randomized. Meg has to point it out to him on his next turn.
    • "Wii Party requires skill" has Cagg end up being the solo player for Hide-and-Peek. While he manages to find Choc and Tiny, he can't find Megan, despite her being completely visible from the spring riders, costing him the game. He later explains he didn't know the spring riders were in play.
    • In "Mario Party Jamboree is Rigged", Cagg chooses to head to the Last-Place Shop thinking he can buy an item, despite him being in first place and it being the final turn, meaning he would not gain an item from stopping on that Event Space anyway.
    • "We played this Mario Party clone so you don’t have to"note  has everyone doing this on repeat. This includes (but isn’t limited to) them not noticing that they can only use the Slayer Abilities every three turns and asking why you wouldn’t do it every turn while the answer is on-screen, complaining about Choc getting Nezuko’s help because they didn’t bother to read that she helps the person in last place, not realizing that you could only have one Slayer Ally until Casey was forced to choose between Gyomei or Zenitsu and constantly interpreting “swing the remote” as “press a button.”
    • In "Mario Party is Often Disappointing", Cagg ends up in last place at the Twist and Sort minigame. He then reveals that he was looking at Choc's screen the whole time because the former was player 3, and the latter was third to move. Despite the character positions being shown at the beginning of the game.
  • Fake-Out Fade-Out: After growing tired of the CPU Amy being in the lead for the majority of their time playing Sonic Shuffle, Cagg states that they're ending the video regardless, and the channel outro starts playing before being cut by a shot of Amy harnessing the power of the Precioustone, triggering an Accident.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: "This needs to stop" opens with Casey being accused of leaving Oreo halves in the box, with the incident making a return in this community post. This is treated the same way as Casey assaulting Megan on stream.
  • The Gadfly: Choc tends to make fun of his co-hosts a lot. The most consistent examples of this is his Demonization of Casey and anything made at Vernias' expense, though he's also made fun of Danny for his constant screw-ups in platformers.
  • The Gambling Addict: Downplayed and Played for Laughs. When they discover the slot machine in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, they waste all of their coins on it in seconds. When Vernias points out that he played the slots only twice, Choc jokes that Vern has a gambling problem.
  • Groin Attack: Choc accidentally makes this happen to Mario during their playthrough of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, courtesy of being in the wrong place at the wrong time when playing through World 6's tower.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Megan, an affiliate of the group, has appeared in numerous videos, sometimes filling in for one of the group. As of late, she's made more appearances on the channel to the point where she could be considered an unofficial member.
    • Adam, one of the group's editors, has occasionally filled in for one of the group or joined in their videos, particularly Jackbox videos.
  • The Hyena: Casey tends to break out in laughter during the videos where he's present, most notably when someone (particularly Danny or Tom) screws something up.
  • Idiot Ball: Cagg frequently makes very bad decisions in the New Super Mario Bros. videos, especially when it revolves around him not doing something, only for him to do it anyways. This also somewhat plays a role in his high number of continues.
  • Interrupted by the End: At the end of their Petoons Party video, Cagg becomes semi-convinced that Vernias designed the game. Vernias' protests against this only goes on for 20 seconds before the channel's outro starts playing.
  • Laugh Themselves Sick: When Casey has one of his laughing fits, his face will eventually turn red. There have been some cases where he laughs so hard to the point his face turns purple, as seen here.
  • Malaproper: The end of "Don't play Wii Party with friends" has the group unlock Shifty Gifts in the Challenge minigame mode. Choc misreads it as Shitty Gifts, prompting Tom to joke about subscribing "for more shitty gifts".
  • Mascot: Sidequest has a channel mascot in the form of a green-skinned goblin in an adventurer's getup dubbed Grub the Goblin.
  • Misère Game: "We changed the rules of Mario Party" is one, having the group try to lose in a game of Mario Party 9.
  • Nickname Basis: Played Straight with Vernias, whose real name is Carnig, Averted with Kai, Tiny and Cagg, who go by their real names Tom, Casey and Danny respectively, Zig-Zagged with Choc, as he's referred to by his YouTuber handle and real life name (Rob) at random.
    • Zig-Zagged for Vernias when he addresses the rest of the group. He refers to Choc and Tiny by their nicknames, but uses Cagg's real name.
  • Noodle Incident: During the New Super Mario Bros. U videos, it is joked about that Tiny lost his left nut to a mysterious incident.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: In their playthrough of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Vernias at one point says "I'm the pretty princess. And you're Italian!", offending the group (which mostly consists of Italians) who calls him out on this. He tries to justify this by saying he thought it sounded funny.
  • Periphery Demographic: In-Universe. When the group found out that they had a TV Tropes page, they thought that TV Tropes was a (traditional) wiki, and were then confused that the page added non-facts (i.e. the trope examples), not knowing that TV Tropes is not like Wikipedia at all.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Vernias is usually seen playing characters who have pink colorations, like Birdo and Toadette or any character in Super Smash Bros. with a pink alternate color. Even in person, he's usually wearing an article of clothing that is pink in some fashion (and has also dyed his hair pink at one point).
  • Repeat Cut:
  • Running Gag:
    • Casey as the devil.
    • The Casey Cackle, usually accompanied by the footage tilting while shrinking.
    • Casey (potentially) attacking someone or destroying something whenever a game involves motion controls, particularly Wii Sports and WarioWare.
      • By extension, the members remind their viewers to put their wrist strap on before playing one such game, or after someone (especially Casey) accidentally flings their Wii Remote or Joy-Con.
    • The group trolling Megan by giving her blatantly incorrect directions in Wii Party or Mario Party.
    • Rob hoping Casey will die in some form after something good happens to the latter, especially if Casey replies with "I would love that".
    • Megan or Danny abysmally failing at something due to misunderstanding game controls or not paying attention. Doubles as in "Mario Party is Often Disappointing", Rob states that he sometimes thinks Danny is male Megan after one such incident.
    • Any mention of Tom's lack of animal knowledge.
    • Rob declaring he will beat Danny in another golf game whenever golf is involved.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge:invoked
    • "We made Mario Party an RPG" has the group add a Dungeons & Dragons-style dice roll check for events such as buying items and Stars. Rolling a 1 during this check bans the current player from participating in the next minigame, while a 20 allows them to give another player a spicy challenge. Winning 4-player minigames and landing on Red Spaces gives the player an advantage and a disadvantage on their next check roll, respectively.
    • The group aims to get last place overall in "We changed the rules of Mario Party" by obtaining the least Bananas.
    • They have also introduced BeanBoozled in two Super Mario Party Jamboree sessions, where members eat beans for various events such as getting last place in a minigame and another player getting a star.
  • Serious Business: Tiny, in their Wii Sports video. Compared to the others, he swings the Wii Remote more wildly, leading to Choc making a short poking fun at him for it, while the others remark how unsafe they feel being around him.
  • Signature Laugh: Casey's hysterical laughter, often dubbed the Casey Cackle or his Evil Laugh, is notable within the group (and their fans) for being contagious when it happens, as seen here.
  • Smug Smiler: Cagg often sports a prominent smirk, though this does nothing to compensate for his lackluster gaming performance. Lampshaded by Choc in "Wii Sports got a little TOO competitive...", where he notices the viewers saying that Cagg is often smirking.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Though not being an official member of the channel, Megan is the only female that has consistently played with the group with another female being a guest in "We entered the Olympics" being Gio.
  • Sore Loser: Choc, during Mario Party sessions. When he loses, he rants about the winner being "carried" throughout the whole game, as seen here and here.
  • Sound-Effect Bleep: Swears in their videos are replaced with a dolphin sound to comply with monetization rules.
  • Special Guest:
  • Stealth Insult: In "The Most UNFAIR Mario Party Board", Tom asks if Kamek has eyes under his "goggles" or if he's wearing glasses. Choctopus informs him that Bowser wouldn't hire an idiot to be his right hand man and Tom (somehow) assumes this means that he's just wearing glasses because it looks cool but Choc clarifies that he means that he has bad eyesight and wears them because he needs to. Naturally, Tom doesn’t pick up on this.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: Megan can be seen as the Straight Man to Casey's Wise Guy, most often seen in Jackbox videos like "That's enough Jackbox..." where Meg's practical answers contrast Casey's more quirky answers in Quiplash, as well as the former correcting the latter for his misconceptions in certain games, particularly in Wii Party.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Choc has expressed numerous times in any of their New Super Mario Bros. videos how everyone are idiots whenever they do something to warrant that response. He eventually said this trope by name during "This Mario Level Nearly Ended Our Channel" after watching Casey get the checkpoint flag, preventing them from being able to backtrack the level for the last star coin quicker, even after saying "Don't" three times.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Nabbit (played by Casey) in their playthrough of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. He steals the others' powerups and leads them to their death in some stages.
  • Unaffected by Spice: Inverted with Cagg, who has a low spice tolerance and fears having to eat something spicy during their Mario Party playthroughs. He yells out a Precision F-Strike when he is selected for a spicy challenge in their anniversary playthrough.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing:
    • Inverted with Tom in "Don't play Wii Party with friends". He loses the Tropical Punch minigame due to moving off the platform once the game starts.
    • Also inverted during the Poserobics minigame in "Wii Party requires skill". Megan wins simply because the others misunderstood the controls, doing nothing and eliminating them in the first round. Despite Rob reading the directions before the game starts.
      • Also inverted in the same video, where Meg loses Strategy Steps due to constantly picking 5, being unable to advance.
  • Wolverine Publicity:
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: During their trip to a trampoline park, Vern spots a claw machine with Mario-related plushes. Before he could get to the machine, a child begins using it while Vern waits for the child to finish. Choc then (jokingly) tells Vern to assert dominance and shove the child out of the way of the machine, which Vern completely objects to.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: In "We changed the rules of Mario Party", Vern accidentally calls Danny Casey, which he tries to justify by saying the two names have similar endings. He ends up offending both Danny and Casey, with the former remarking how Vern still doesn't know who they are after 2 years.
