Wow, Ethan! Great moves, keep it up, proud of you!

"We make comedy videos."
h3h3Production's YouTube channel description

h3h3Productions is a YouTube comedy series run by husband and wife team Ethan and Hila Klein. The series is a bit free form format-wise. Ethan will often react to outrageous and meme-worthy YouTube videos. What sets Ethan's reaction videos apart from others is that rather than taping his face as he watches each video, he instead displays highlighted clips from the videos and discusses them. Occasionally, the pair will perform skits based around the video at hand. The most prominent aspect of the channel, however, is the creation and celebration of memes with Ethan and Hila continuously revisiting the funniest aspects of the videos they highlight. This lends the series an entertaining sense of continuity.

Ethan is joined by Hila (who is normally behind the camera) in their side-channel Ethan and Hila which has a more vlog-like format. Beginning on July 29, 2016 however, the sub-channel's format was merged into their main channel, with Ethan and Hila being relegated for miscellaneous content for the meantime.

On April Fool's Day 2017, Ethan was jokingly teased as a new playable character in the video game PAYDAY 2. After positive reception from the community, developer Overkill Software announced on May 10 that both Ethan and Hila will actually be added to the game in Fall 2017, and all proceeds from their DLC pack will go straight to supporting the pair's channel.

This series provides examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: They react to one in the form of a Polish YouTuber/motivational speaker obsessed with fame to the point where he fakes being invited to appear on Ellen by building an exact replica of the set and hiring a fake Ellen DeGeneres to conduct a show under the premise that he's already done a fake show with the impostor's impostor in the audience and this is the real deal, all while regaling the crowd with true stories of him stalking celebrities to engineer "fan encounters" with them. This is to spread the message of the power of "visualization", but all it really does is prove that the man is insane and belongs behind bars, not on national TV.
  • Advertisement:
  • Adam Westing: PewDiePie's appearance in "My Epic Collab With PewDiePie!!", which portrays him as a big-shot Youtuber who couldn't care less about Ethan (in reality the two are good friends).
  • Adaptation Expansion: Basically all of Ethan's reaction videos. Invoked in "Reading the Good Looking Loser's Comments", and by the judge of their fair-use lawsuit, who addressed this point in her decision in favor of the Kleins.
  • Adorkable: Both of them.
  • All Jews Are Ashkenazi: Subverted: Ethan is Ashkenazi like almost all American Jews, but the Israeli-born Hila is Sephardi and her dad is from Libya while her mom is from Turkey.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Being from Israel, Hila speaks Israeli Hebrew which she's used at least once on the show to interpret something in a video.
  • Clickbait Gag: The video "Why Is this Video on the TRENDING Tab???" accuses YouTube of encouraging the use of sensational titles over actual content, specifically by taking apart a fake prank video that trended. It even includes a black-and-white, slow-motion sequence where Ethan tries to resist clicking on the video, but since it says "MUST WATCH," he physically has to click the link.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Jimmie "The Jersey Outlaw", a.k.a., "One Fucked Up Dentist", doesn't realize how terrible his comedy is and enjoys Ethan and Hila's reactions, to the point where Jimmie hung out with Ethan one day, and later made a part 3 to the dentist series at his request.
  • Comical Overreacting: Ethan will occasionally be "TRIGGERED" which will have him seizing wildly at incredibly ridiculous things.
  • Cringe Comedy: The main style behind the show: Ethan and Hila watch some of the most uncomfortable videos found on the internet and give their thoughts, often repeating verbatim the content of the videos they are lampooning.
  • Critical Research Failure: In-Universe. When the lyrics "England is my city" come up in It's Everyday Bro, England is then brought up on google, with the word country underlined in bright red.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Kinda for both Ethan and Hila: Both struggled when they first got together due to low income and even had to resort to becoming pot dealers for a small while (at least two weeks tops). Does become heartwarming when you learn Ethan and Hila resorted to that so they could still be together.
  • Dead Baby Comedy: Ethan's jokes can veer straight into this territory without warning.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Whenever Hila speaks up it is usually to deliver a hilarious flat snark.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Long before the Paul brothers became a recurring subject of discussion in their videos, Logan Paul had a small role in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode that Ethan reacted to.
  • Global Ignorance: Annaliese Nielsen, who calls Hawai'i a continent, of all things.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Zarna Joshi apparently. She seems incapable of not having a fit when speaking in public.
  • Happily Married: Contrary to popular belief, Ethan and Hila are married and aren't siblings.
  • Humble Hero: Rudy "Hugh Mungus" Pantoja Jr. When Ethan set up a crowdfunding campaign to support Rudy during a cancer diagnosis and combat Zarna Joshi's attempts at a crowdfunding campaign, Rudy said he'd only take the minimum he needs and'll give the rest to charity.
  • N-Word Privileges: Ethan frequently makes anti-semitic jokes, which would be insensitive if it wasn't for the fact that Ethan and his entire family are Jewish.
  • One Steve Limit: On one hand we have Ethan Klein, host of the show. On the other, we have ETHAN BRADBERRY of Moe and ET, a prankster duo and very common subject of ridicule to the show and its fanbase due to their content.
  • Recap Episode: "Thank You", for 2016.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Ethan is really silly and in your face, while Hila is much more subdued. This contrast is arguably half of the appeal behind their duo.
  • Running Gag: Being that the show revolves around memes and happens to create some of their own, they have accumulated many running gags.
    • The phrases "goofs" and "gaffs".
      • "SLAMIIIIIIN!"
    • Ethan's coughing. It was partially candid, but he would act it up for comedic effect.
    • Another phrase that's been used more recently, TRIGGERED.
      • And again after the Hugh Mungus response video, INTERNALIZED OPPRESSION.
    • Whenever Logan Paul or his brother is involved, Ethan will often bring up Logan's "NAW AH'M A STRAWBERREH".
    • Every time iDubbz comes around to film a video, Ethan's front door is broken and he has to get into the house in some stupid way.
  • Sanity Slippage: Subverted at the end of "Ethan Joins a 90s Boy Band": Ethan seemingly goes insane while finally realizing how ungodly stupid his dream of creating a B4-4-style boy band really is.
  • Secret Test of Character: Upon seeing that Zarna Joshi started a YouCaring page to crowdfund her "safety and well-being", Ethan left a donation of $100 and a message about how if she accepts the money she is accepting the so-called patriarchy that she claims to oppose. Zarna then took the money while deleting the message attached.
  • Self-Deprecation: Ethan will acknowledge his faults and has made himself look like a complete clown many times.
  • Sensory Abuse: The slamming Bradberry video where the audio of the episode is boosted when the Bradberries are screaming "Slammin'" at the top of their lungs.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: In Jews Did 9/11 PROVEN, Ethan makes fun of the subject video's decision to play upbeat trance music over footage of the planes hitting the World Trade Center.
  • Spotting the Thread: When Wall Street Journal's attack articles on "racist" YouTubers came out, Ethan spotted that they were faking ads found in an attempt to get advertisers to pull out of YouTube (which worked so well people are now suffering badly financially) by noticing that no video with an N word in the title would EVER get ads on it.
  • Statuesque Stunner: In How We Met At The Holocaust Museum, Ethan notes that this was one of the things that first attracted him to the 5'10" Hila when they first caught eyes.
  • The Stoner: Ethan's "Vape Nation" persona who is a hardcore marijuana (and vape) enthusiast.
  • invokedStop Being Stereotypical: One of the biggest criticisms Ethan has in the "How to Clean Your Gamer Gear" reaction video is how the Dust-Off infomercial paints gamers as unhygienic nerds who spout Totally Radical lingo and are too stupid to know how to clean a keyboard with compressed air.
Spokesman: You're not gonna get there if you're gear's all crapped-up with 'gamer-gunk'; dust, chip dip, greasy sticky slimy game residue!
Ethan: Oh your keyboard isn't fucking full of chip dip and covered in splooge? Oh, then you're not a real gamer!
    Ethan: I'm a real gamer!
  • Stupid Statement Dance Mix: "I Won't Lie, This Is Definitely Me" by Schmoyoho from the "Thank You" video remixes many of the memes associated with the channel in 2016 into one of these.
  • Stunned Silence: Ethan, when, as according to the obvious outcome Hila's predicts about a target in a "Butt Baby Syringe" video, the man places the target on the baby doll's butt and throws syringes at it.
  • invokedUnfortunate Implications: Comes into question with some of the videos they react at.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: "Everyone Needs to stop getting so TRIGGERED". Ethan goes on one against people who get so outraged at people not agreeing with their politics that they pitch hissy fits and demonized the dissenter, and he says this about both the right and the left.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Papa John's and Pepsi Max have legendary status for the Kleins.
  • Verbal Tic: Aside from Ethan's coughing, he has a tendency to begin or punctuate sentences with the word "dude."

Wow, Ethan! Great moves! Keep it up, proud of you!
