  • Anti-Mutiny: Riley and the others refuse to cooperate with Captain Renwick when the Pennsylvania receives orders to nuke Chicago in a futile effort to stop the Zombie Apocalypse.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Before the outbreak starts, Riley is unsure whether he is fit to be a father, expressing interest in being commander of his own submarine one day. Needless to say, he gets his priorities in order once everything goes to hell, though unfortunately too late...
  • Boom, Headshot!: Riley gives a Mercy Kill to the bitten Captain Renwick.
  • The Cameo: Teddy Maddox makes a brief appearance at the end of the series, approaching Riley with the intention of recruiting him for his Apocalypse Cult.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Riley is completely broken hearing the deaths of his wife and son over the phone.
  • Downer Ending: Riley manages to get out and contact his wife, only to hear her and their son die over the phone. Months later, a very familiar figure approaches him, telling him this is not the end.
  • Dwindling Party: The 155-person crew has been whittled down to just 8 by the end.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Riley is moments away from blowing his brains out when he gets approached by Teddy.
  • Nice Guy: Surprisingly, Riley is this, in contrast to the Faux Affably Evil Smug Snake he will be by the time of Fear.
  • Saved by Canon: Riley goes on to be a major recurring antagonist in Season 6 while Walter is a Small Role, Big Impact in the premiere episode of that season.
  • Sub Story: The series is set nearly entirely (except for the last scenes of the last episode) onboard a submarine.
