HEY KIDS! IT'S THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS TV TROPES PAGE!On October 2, 2014, a YouTube user by the name Fried Chili Cheese Dogs
uploaded a fan-made commercial for SpongeBob SquarePants cereal. The odd editing and comedic timing made it a pretty big hit, spawning memes and a few imitation videos. Over the course of three more years, FCCD released three more videos.
What follows from the first episode onward is a very, very strange turn of events.
The episodes in order are:
Have some tropes, Mr. Squidward!
- Art Evolution: Sandy is upgraded from a tiny action figure to a doll in her second appearance, and Plankton is a doll post episode 1.
- Ascended Meme: Mr. Krabs rattles off (and does) a bunch of actions that rhyme with his catchphrase in "Everything". He even opens up a charity. Give a Bowl, Mr. Squidward!
- Butt-Monkey: Squidward and Plankton are this as per canon, but Sandy, of all characters, gets her share of bad luck, being subject to getting yelled at by the other characters and having things thrown at her.
- Catchphrase:
- All together now.
"HAVE A BOWL, MR. SQUIDWARD!" - SpongeBob also has for the first two episodes: "It's part of a balanced breakfast/dinner!"
- All together now.
- Covered in Gunge: Squidward, at the end of "Fruit Snacks".
- Death by Materialism: Plankton's endgame for our heroes. Fortunately, SpongeBob saves the day... by preventing the current video from being uploaded.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: There is a gag in the first two episodes where SpongeBob snorts powdery stuff from the product as if it is some sort of drug.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: The first video is the only one to have "commercial" in the title, creating an odd inversion of Artifact Title. Also, Plankton is a sticker attached to a plastic ring.
- Flanderization: And a pretty impressive amount for a four episode series.
- SpongeBob goes from a cheery and friendly guy to a whiny child that refuses to stop bothering everyone.
- Patrick becomes a catchphrase spewing idiot instead of just a somewhat lazy Big Eater.
- Squidward becomes a downright Cosmic Plaything and gets hurt almost every time he's on screen.
- Mr. Krabs starts losing his temper at the slightest provocation and yells at people constantly.
- Sandy's accent and personality become intensely obnoxious by her second appearance. She is also a huge Butt-Monkey and everyone hates her, unlike the show, where she was only subject to bad luck from time to time and everyone respected her.
- Forced Meme:
- Half of what Patrick says from the second episode onward has shades of this.
- "Boiled Cabbage!"
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Sandy. She's constantly getting yelled at and having things thrown at her.
- Harmless Villain: Plankton. He gets defeated by falling cereal, for crying out loud! Or, so it seems.
- Mondegreen Gag: When SpongeBob's banana racecar peels and explodes, he shouts, "Oh no! My banana is peeling!" After his demise, Patrick notes that he thought that SpongeBob said "peeing" instead.
- Once an Episode:
- Squidward or Plankton get hurt.
- If there is a powdery material, expect SpongeBob to snort it.
- Mr. Krabs says "Have a bowl, Mr. Squidward!" or a variation of it (i.e. "Have a bowl, Mr. Plankton!" and "Have a bowl, Miss Cheeks!").
- The Stinger shows the creator cleaning up the mess he's made of his kitchen.
- Precision F-Strike: "YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY! GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!" Said to Sandy by SpongeBob.
- Product Placement: Well, duh.
- Serial Escalation: Goes from a short parody commercial to a no-holds-barred critique on commercialism itself.
- "Shaggy Dog" Story: The plot of "Fruit Snacks" (of what little plot it has) climaxes in Squidward winning the race. Instead of money, he wins a banana. Would the phrase "Sweet and Sour Grapes" be too on the nose?
- Stuff Blowing Up: "Uh-oh, I think something's wrong with my watermelon!"note
- Suddenly Shouting: Both Mr. Krabs and the Narrator are prone to this.
- Take That!: Although it becomes more blatant in the final episode, it's pretty clearly lampooning the insane amount of merchandise that Nickelodeon churns out for their
Cash-Cow Franchise. - Wham Shot: Plankton was the one behind not only all of the SpongeBob products, but the videos themselves, and plans on distracting them with so much merchandising that he can take over the world.
