Abuela is the name of a series of comedy videos by Jenny Lorenzo. The videos are themed around a stereotypical latina grandmother called "Abuela" ("Grandmother" in Spanish). They're predominantly in Spanish but are subtitled in English.
Abuela started out as a series of skits hosted by BuzzFeed (which were later sponsored by Telemundo) that were later expanded on. The series includes the various extended family of Abuela's.
The series can be viewed on this playlist.
This series provides examples of:
- Chupacabra: In one video, the superstitious Abuela worries that the chupacabra will eat the dog because she's in the yard unsupervised.
- Cringe Comedy: Several of the videos revolve around how awkward the scene is.
- Don't Make Me Take My Belt Off!: Abuela is constantly trying to spank her (adult) grandchildren, most commonly with sandals.
- Hero of Another Story: In the 2020 Sangiving video, Jamie reveals that Kevin has an extremely exciting life off-screen (including but not limited to, being invited to Thanksgiving with the Kardashians, attending concerts where the bands are fans of his, and a college naming a science building in his honour despite never being a student) much to the bewilderment of Laritza.
- The Münchausen: Gloria, whose always trying to make herself more successful, skilled, or refined than either of her sisters.
- Politically Incorrect Hero: A lot of the comedy comes from Abuela's outdated nature. She's not a Racist Grandma but does display other behaviors like casual fat-shaming and threatening to spank her grandkids.
- The Rival: Abuela and Mirta are always trying to one-up each other whether it's at church, the doctor's or over zoom.
- Running Gag: Nobody ever seems to remember or recognize cousin Kevin (except Jaime).
- Spicy Latina: Abuela is a mouthy Cuban grandmother.
- Trademark Favorite Food: For Laritza, it's Mac and Cheese.
- Uncanny Family Resemblance: All of Abuela's female relations are played by Jenny Lorenzo.
- Vague Age: Jaslainey and Laritza, two of Abuela's granddaughters are either in High School or at least college age depending on the sketch.
