Those who fight monsters... Can be cool detectives. note
Monster Detectives is about... Well, monster detectives. Created by AJ Whitfield in 2018, the comic follows the adventures of three detectives living in a New Orleans-esque city, filled with monsters, super-powered beings, and normal citizens alike.
The main character is the modern reincarnation of Pandora, Galyna ‘Pandora’ Spyridoula. Along with her are her superiors, Valentino, a reanimated cat skeleton, and Jasper, a shapeshifting shadowy demon. The three try to solve problems, both interpersonal and larger- Sometimes both at the same time.
The first comic, Missing In Action (or MIA for short) debuted November 26, 2018, and was concluded in October 19th, 2019. The next comic has yet to be announced.
This webcomic contains examples of:
- Badass Normal: Pandora to an extent. Pandora is technically just a normal person, who just decided to wield the box of all evil, to do good.
- Deadpan Snarker: All of them to an extent, but Valentino is the one who uses it the most.
- Defective Detective: Actively called out for this behavior, Valentino will put a lot of his personal life aside for the case at hand.
- Pollyanna: Pandora to a T. Someone who is cursed with Pandora’s Box is not going to have an easy life. Her resilience to do good and to see the positive is what makes her an endearing character. To a lesser extent, Jasper.Pandora: My only friends are a group of destructive ingrates. It’s like I never left middle school.
- Wham Shot: Jasper being set on fire and melting.
