Lore Rekindled (Webcomic)

Lore Kindled is a fan webcomic based on Lore Olympus, written and illustrated by generic puff. It is intended as a reinterpretation of the comic, complete with new art and a rewritten storyline.

As is the original, the story focuses on the growing relationship between Persephone and Hades and all the conflict that comes with it, as the two soon grow closer and closer.

The comic can be read on Tumblr, Dillyhub and NamiComi.

Provides examples of:

  • 0% Approval Rating: The three kings aren't that well liked by the general populace, largely due to them being Jerkass Gods who don't really care about their people. When Dionysus attacks Hades in a restaurant that Hades, Zeus and Poseidon frequent, one of the put-upon employees snarks that she's had fantasies about something like this happening.
  • Adaptational Deviation: Being a rewrite of the original Lore Olympus, Rekindled significantly changes parts of the story:
    • Persephone and Hades meet much earlier than in the original comic, as in here, they have a chitchat over drinks and Persephone gives her heels to him since they're hurting her feet.
    • In the original, Persephone ends up in Hades' car and place due to Eros (by request of his mother Aphrodite after hearing Hades say that Persephone is more beautiful than her) intentionally making her as drunk as possible and planting her in Hades' car, believing that she would think that Hades was the one who did it. Here, it is due to Persephone getting herself way more drunk than she intended and then accidentally stumbling into Hades' car, with Hades' chauffeur, Charon, not caring about the stowaway and driving the car home per Hades' request.
    • Artemis trying to prove she's a better shot than her twin brother Apollo at the Panathenea is instigated by Persephone here, whereas in Olympus, Zeus was the one who provoked her as a distraction so Hades could speak to Persephone alone.
    • In Olympus, Persephone is dropped off at Artemis' house by Hades and both of them are approached by Artemis, who calls out Hades for seemingly taking advantage of her. In Rekindled, Hades simply drops off Persephone and never encounters Artemis. When Artemis asks where Persephone has been, the latter lies by claiming she was at Hecate's place.
    • In the original comic, Persephone gets a job in the underworld from Hera. In Rekindled, Hades is the one to give it to her due to a tabloid taking a picture of the pair when Hades is driving her home and Hades wanting to fix Persephone's reputation.
    • In Olympus, Persephone failing to get a hang of Underworld Corps' computer programs was wholly due to her simply not being qualified for the job, due to only recently being introduced to modern technology. In Rekindled, the reason why Persephone just can't seem to get a grasp on things is revealed to be because Minthe is actively sabotaging her.
    • According to the writer, fertility goddess exist. However, unlike the original comic, being a fertility goddess does not literally mean being involved with fertility. Instead, it gives one the power to create new gods without the need to. Additionally, both male and female deities can be born with this ability rather than just one woman per generation.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Both Hermes and Apollo appear much earlier than in the original comic, where they were first seen in Chapter 20 and 21 respectively. In Rekindled, their first appearance is at Zeus' party in Chapter 3.
  • Adaptational Job Change: Downplayed with Charon; In the original comic, Charon was the ferryman of the dead. He is still a ferryman in Rekindled, but he also works as Hades' chauffeur.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance: In the original comic, Hera appears fairly early at Chapter 2. In Rekindled she appears much later at when Persephone goes to therapy, though she is given an Early-Bird Cameo in the second chapter
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul:
    • Persephone is less trusting of Hades than in the original, as she is understandably skeeved out by him taking her to his place to care for her. Likewise, Hades is not immediately smitten with Persephone when they meet, seeing her as more of an acquaintance than anything.
    • Unlike the original, Persephone and Apollo have been dating in secret at the start of the comic.
  • Adapted Out: Neither Eros nor Psyche appear in this comic.
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: After getting drunk the previous night, Artemis has the brilliant idea of trying to shoot her arrow at a golden apple on Hermes' head, causing the latter to get an eye injury in the process.
  • All Myths Are True: While assigning the dead new homes in the underworld, Hades encounters a Viking who asks where Odin is, confirming that multiple gods from multiple mythologies exist.
  • Always Night: Since the Underworld is, well, underground, the sun never reaches it and as a direct result it's always dark and cold.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Much like the original comic, all of the Gods have colorful skins.
  • Ascended Extra: Charon and Hypnos are minor characters in the original comic. In Rekindled, they work directly under Hades and are actively involved in helping Persephone getting a job in the underworld.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: After Persephone asks Hades what happens to nymphs when they die, he explains that their souls aren't bound to the Underworld and that he doesn't know what happens to them aside from a vague belief that they return to nature in their purest forms.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: As in Olympus the gods all have a signature color that makes it easier to identify them.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Downplayed. Hades has a bad reputation among Olympus' citizens, largely for being the ruler of the Underworld and the dead, and some of it is unfairly exaggerated. That being said, he's not exactly a nice person either, so at least some of the caution others exercise when around him is justified.
  • Deconstruction Fic: The comic often puts a spotlight on Hades' more obsessive and unethical actions from Lore Olympus and reframes them as more serious character flaws than the original comic did.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Most deities are created by rather than born through pregnancy and they often view their relationship as non-familial, creator and created rather than parent and child. For example, Persephone was accidentally formed when Zeus' lightning hit Demeter's flower field but she only considers Demeter to be her mother and does not view Zeus as a father, with him and his family also not viewing her as his daughter. Dialogue from Hera even implies that Persephone and Demeter's mother-daughter relationship is an oddity among their kind. Another example would be that the members of the Six Traitor dynasty were all created by Rhea but only Zeus, Hades and Poseidon see each other as siblings.
  • Demoted to Extra: Both Hera and Aphrodite have fairly major roles in the original comic, with Hera being a close family friend to Persephone and Aphrodite being the one to ask her son Eros to plant Persephone in Hades' car. In this work, they are mostly background characters, though Hera appears later in the comic.
  • Destructive Romance: Hades' relationship with Minthe is a toxic, unhealthy mess, not helped by the difference in social status between them. Both of them are aware their fling isn't necessarily good for them, but have resigned themselves to being "messed up together" since they're both convinced nobody else would want them.
  • Enemy Mine: In Chapter 38, Persephone's evil side forms a truce with Minthe (who intentionally sent Persephone to a forbidden zone in the Underworld) to ensure nothing bad happens between Minthe and Hades.
  • Everybody Hates Hades: Unlike in Olympus, this is played straight here. Hades is feared by the mortals, the majority of Olypmus and even most of his own subjects due to his harsh and cold demeanor. While he has his softer moments, Hades is overall a very standoffish person who tends to lash out and lose his temper easily, which explains why everyone except his closest family is so reluctant to get close to him.
  • Eye Scream:
    • During Zeus' party, Artemis tries shooting an arrow through an apple on Hermes' head. She misses and hits his eye, causing him to wear an eyepatch the next morning.
    • Hades rips one of Alex's eyes out as part of the punishment for taking a picture of Hades and Persephone on Hades' property.
  • Fix Fic: Rekindled addresses and attempts to rectify many issues pointed out by readers in Olympus, namely lessening the age gap between Hades and Persephone by aging her up from 19 to 1900 years, changing Persephone's personality from The Ingenue to a more mature and socially aware young woman and actively pointing out Hades' more creepy tendencies that Olympus either brushed aside or romanticized, like his clingy personality and overly obsessive behavior.
  • High Heel Hurt: Persephone ends up giving Hades her shoes since the heels were hurting her feet.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Hades is several heads taller than Persephone.
  • Mystical Pregnancy: While normal pregnancy is possible, many gods are created by deities mixing their elements or their blood together. For example, Persephone was inadvertently created when Zeus struck Demeter's flower field with his lightning.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • When trying to remember Persephone's name, Hades at first starts saying "Proser-" before correcting himself. Proserpina was what the Romans called Persephone.
    • Hades' business card has one of his aliases listed as "Dark Zeus". In Olympus, a mortal who happened to witness Hades leading Persephone through the Mortal Realm called Hades the same thing.
    • In a bit of Alcohol-Induced Stupidity, Artemis tries to do a trick shot that would culminate in her shooting through a golden apple on Hermes' head. Perhaps the same one Eris once tried to offer three other goddesses?
    • Hades at one point grouses that Zeus is "dumber than the rock [their] mom swapped [him] for", referencing the trick used to rescue Zeus from being eaten by his father Kronos in the Titanomachy.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When Persephone's evil side takes over, her sclera turns red.
  • Revisiting the Roots: The comic takes heavy inspiration from the pilot version of Lore Olympus that had been uploaded to the "Canvas" section of Webtoons before it was deleted so that Rachel Smythe could restart the comic with a higher art quality for the website's "Originals" section. Several scenes and lines of dialogue of "Rekindled" are almost directly copied from the pilot.
  • Take That!:
    • Episode 19 has a scene where Persephone watches a melodramatic soap opera where a woman tells her lover that she trashed a woman's apartment for him and they make love in his office, with Persephone bemoaning how much the show's writers have stopped caring. This is likely a reference to the scene in Lore Olympus where Persephone lets a bunch of animals trash Leuce's apartment after she tried to seduce Hades, with him making love to her after learning about.
    • Episode 64 has a scene that takes a jab at the infamous "never apologize for being a Sicilian" line from the original comic.
  • Worthless Yellow Rocks: As a deity with few followers, Hades created currency in order to get more attention from mortals. This has also resulted in the Underworld becoming far more capitalistic than Olympus. Olympians and other high ranking deities, who get all they need through mortal tribute or their own supernatural abilities, operate on a barter system whenever they want something from one and only maintain an economy for the benefit the less powerful citizens of Olympus. For example, Hera invited Persephone to dinner but only in exchange for her doing garden work.
  • Your Television Hates You: In this comic, Persephone is the mascot of Barley Mother's cereal and is often given unwanted attention because of that. In Episode 19, she attempts to distract herself by studying while have some TV as background noise, only for the TV to suddenly show a Barley Mothers commercial. Needless to say, Persephone is frustrated by that.
