There's not much of a plot to the animation's plot. It revolves around grown versions of Sweetie Belle and Button Mash reminiscing about their past friendship and singing about how they miss one another.
Strangers provides examples of:
- Childhood Friend Romance: Sweetie Belle and Button Mash have been friends since foalhood. They eventually grew apart for unspecified reasons, but they miss one another.
- Pink Girl, Blue Boy: There's a shot of pink and blue horseshoes, symbolizing Sweetie Belle and Button Mash.
- Puppy Love: Sweetie and Button were close as foals. It's hard to tell if they were just friends or not, but their interactions imply a childish romance.
- Promoted to Love Interest: In canon, Button Mash barely even interacts with Sweetie. Here, they're good buddies that eventually grew apart.
