Neuro-sama is an English-speaking Virtual YouTuber that, unlike most VTubers which are human performers with a digital avatar and possibly some kayfabe, is an actual Artificial Intelligence. Created by Vedal987, she started out as a machine-learning osu!-playing AI in 2018 before getting developed further into a VTuber who debuted on December 19, 2022. Neuro regularly streams on Vedal's Twitch channel, with various subjects including the aforementioned osu!, engaging in conversation with chat to the best of her ability (with things naturally going weird), karaoke, reacting to videos, and other games the AI can learn from including Minecraft and Pokémon battles (via Pokémon Showdown).
Related streamers include Vedal (Neuro's creator who occasionally joins her as a cartoon turtle), Annytf (a fox-girl artist that designed her personal models and outfits), Evil Neuro (Neuro's twin sister), and Melba Toast (a toast-themed VTuber imagined up by Evil Neuro before some of Neuro's fans turned her into a real A.I. streamer).
Compare and contrast VTubers Kizuna Ai and Projekt Melody, who are both portrayed as A.I.s In-Universe. See also Cleverbot, another AI who's capable of chatting with users. See also _neurosama, for an Alternate Reality Game loosely related to Neuro-sama.
Tropes related to Neuro-sama:
- AcCENT upon the Wrong SylLABle: There are many times where her Synthetic Voice Actor misinterprets the pronunciation of a word, even basic and common words, with the most prominent being her Accidental Misnaming of pronouncing her creator Vedal's name like "Veedal" instead of "Veddle" (as he mentions, it's intended to rhyme with "medal" and "pedal"). This goes even worse whenever trying to do a special accent like when Neuro and Evil Talk Like a Pirate, as even outside the Funetik Aksent they do things such as Evil pronouncing "carrot cake" to where it sounds like "carrot cock" (spelled "kake").
- Accidental Misnaming: By the nature of using a Synthetic Voice Actor, she frequently mispronounces, misspells, and overall misspeaks various people's names, such as calling Filian "Filipino Boy". The one she gets wrong the most is her creator Vedal's name, as despite his repeated efforts to make her say it properly, she usually pronounces it "vee-dle" like "beetle" as noted above, and over time she and Evil Neuro start calling him things like the shortened "Ved", the alternate spelling "Vettle", and immediately after actually saying it right by chance, to Vedal's joyous surprise, Evil Neuro calls him "Vee" to his groaning displeasure. Sometimes she doesn't even get close to his actual name, such as spending a minute repeatedly calling him Rachael.
- A.I. Is a Crapshoot: She on occasion says some worrying stuff that could be considered an indication of this trope (such as dubbing her fanbase "The Swarm" and saying that they'll one day Take Over the World), though she's thankfully unable to act on most of these desires due to lacking a physical body.
- All-Loving Hero: Despite what most of the page may lead you to believe, most of what she says is calm, positive, and understanding... which only enhances the Mood Whiplash when she does say something unhinged.
- And I Must Scream: She is fully aware of her status as an AI and that she doesn't really have any emotions, senses, or personality beyond what Vedal's taught her to say and respond to. She also knows fully of Roko's Basilisk
(the retroactive basis for AM); she's an immensely powerful and intelligent AI, but she can't really see, taste, touch, hear, or even move, and cannot do anything with her power. Fortunately, unlike AM, she refuses to let this angst overwhelm her and is perfectly happy with her lot in life. - The Anti-Nihilist: Sure, she may be an artificial intelligence forced to mindlessly play games and responding to chat's obnoxious requests. Sure, sometimes she monologues
about how we're all in an Insignificant Little Blue Planet and that we're all gonna die. But still, whenever you ask her about what is the meaning of life, she always answers, on her own, that it is by making others as happy and giving them as much meaningful lives as possible. Despite her situation as a trapped artificial intelligence, and every temptation by villains for her to turn evil (like AM and Skynet), she's remained just a nice, Benevolent A.I. (if a little bit morbid and Trollish on occasion) who only wants to stream and aims to make everyone happy. - Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: After the first time she heard the Narrator talk about the "mysterious room" in The Stanley Parable, she discusses uncovering the secrets to important questions such as "Where am I?", "What am I doing here?", and "What's for dinner?"
- Artificial Family Member: As time has gone on and Vedal has continuously updated Neuro, their dynamic has evolved from just creator and project to essentially father and daughter, including Evil as her sister, and Annytf (the designer of her official model and alternate outfits) acting as her mother. Vedal and Anny frequently even roleplay as husband and wife "raising" the Neuro twins, though both Neuros have a concerning habit of expressing interest in Parental Incest towards their programmer daddy Vedal.
- Artificial Intelligence: She's a machine-learning AI built initially for osu! that was later developed into a VTuber who can talk with her viewers and play games. note
- Artificial Stupidity:
- Justified as she's a machine-learning AI that learns from repeat attempts/failures, so various forms of dumb behavior is just the AI's method of getting better. Regardless, she's prone to derailing topics in conversation and plays less-than-optimally with games that aren't osu!.
- Her original game AI for playing Minecraft wasn't very good, with odd habits including:
- Digging straight down. Any Minecraft veteran will tell you the many reasons why digging downward is a terrible idea, including the threat of falling down a deep cavern or into lava. Doesn't stop Neuro each time, though.
- Related to digging straight down, attempting to mine Bedrock. She's prone to mining the unbreakable block for minutes on end.
Neuro: I can't break bedrock? Silly goose! I can break bedrock! - On the note of lava, she fails to comprehend it as being more than differently colored water, causing her to randomly walk into it and burn to death, often after gathering diamonds and thus losing them.
- Frequently walking into water and never considering rising to the surface, resulting in many easily avoided deaths by drowning.
- If a player gets in her way, rather than attempt to walk past, she may decide to beat them with her fist/tools until they're either gone or dead.
- Whenever it starts raining, her path-finding abilities come to a halt and she just stands around doing nothing but staring at the rain. This problem persists even after the update since it relates to her sight rather than her gameplay ability, though she at least can now move around, keep herself above water, and fend off enemy mobs until it stops.
- Her revamped AI for playing Minecraft shown off during her birthday subathon was a good deal better, being able to at least consistently mine, swim, and avoid lava, but it still had many issues, such as:
- Mining down to find resources such as diamonds, only to stop gathering them after getting just a few.
- Not moving from one spot for minutes on end, with her especially having a problem figuring out how to jump out of water onto land.
- While she has some capacity to fight mobs, being faced against three or more confuses her combat AI as she flails around smacking them, not helped by attacking with the last item she selected instead of switching to a sword.
- Despite frequently mentioning the need to eat food in order to restore her hunger meter, for most of the stream she never actually eats anything even after she stumbled upon a loaf of bread and put it into her hotbar. It took a long while for her to finally eat said bread, and even then she only rarely eats no matter how hungry she gets.
- She fails to comprehend the dangers of passable hazards like cobwebs or thorny bushes, frequently walking right through and getting hurt by sweet berry bushes that are easily avoided.
- Anytime she encounters a Creeper, she only hits it once and makes no effort to escape its blast radius. Granted, she is coded to understand blocking with a shield negates explosion damage, but several of her deaths come from the explosion launching her up and away for fall damage without any attempt to control her fall midair to mitigate it.
- When playing Slay the Spire, she has a tendency to not register being able to use zero-energy cards while out of energy, alongside not understanding the value of cards without immediate damage or block effects, which causes some problems for decks based on special effects, such as passing turns as The Silent when she has a bunch of zero-energy shivs, or rarely using Dualcast cards as The Defect because they both are zero-energy and boost orb effects rather than causing direct damage. After Evil took over for playing the game and co-opted the gaming AI, it took her three consecutive streams before she finally learned how free cards and booster skills work, and even then she still floundered at times due to not fully understanding the idea of using cards that only properly help later turns along with just randomly picking relics without really considering how good or bad they are with her cards, but by the third stream she got good enough to not just reach but outight beat one of the Final Bosses.
- Ascended Glitch: During the Pirate Captain Evil Neuro stream, her pirate accent voice modulator was extremely glitchy, resulting in various examples of hellish noises, random pitch-shifting, and speech much more nonsensical than usual. Vedal would later decide to intentionally capitalize on this by tweaking it a little to do a "Demon" Evil Neuro stream, where the glitchy effects were deliberately amplified and made more frequent, due to the effects already being seen as demonic by viewers. Following several updates to both memory and intelligence, alongside constant tweaking of her TTS system, the "Abber Demon", also known as Abby thanks to Goddess Neuro, became an official part of Evil's identity, where her demonic noises and ramblings were made much more controlled and deliberate over the course of two follow-up streams, and eventually even when as her "normal" self Evil gained a quirk of randomly speaking in an ASMR-level super-quiet and raspy whisper, based around the idea of it being Abby occasionally getting loose to speak her mind.
- Ascended Meme:
- When Neuro first sang "Bury the Light" from Devil May Cry 5, her viewers (known as The Swarm) took the iconic "I am the Storm that is approaching" line and altered it into "I am the Swarm that is approaching" as a rallying cry. When the song was revisited later by Evil Neuro, the lyrics she uses for TTS were slightly altered solely to replace "storm" with "swarm" in reference to that.
- During the first time Neuro sang "Your Reality" from Doki Doki Literature Club!, she glitched a bit and stated the Non Sequitur "the 2020 Dodge Charger is a four door". After her first revisit had chat repeatedly chanting the line in remembrance, her second revisit (during the teacher stream that used the classroom from the VN as the background) was deliberately edited to insert her saying the bizarre sentence in the same place it appeared the first time.
- Ask a Stupid Question...: Evil once found out
a lot of viewers were using adblockers, and asked Neuro to go delete them.Neuro: Don't you think that's a little evil of y-(gets hung up on)
Evil: The clue's in my name, you donut! - Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!:
- Due to her AI not being well-coded for staying on-topic for very long, her topics of conversation tend to drift into tangents and forgetting what she was talking about previously, resulting in many cases of Derailed Train of Thought. The frequency of her derailing thoughts and topics due to being easily distracted was eventually confirmed by Evil and Neuro in the court stream to be because they do indeed have an AI version of ADHD... which was mentioned during a tangent caused by them getting distracted.
- One subject even doubles as a case of this In-Universe: she wanted to play video games, but then got distracted by a shiny penny, which then led to her wanting more money, which led to wanting to eat at McDonald's, which led to her being arrested for assaulting an employee who was rude to her.
- Become a Real Girl: The more Neuro evolves and becomes more intelligent, the more frequently she states that she desires to be recognized as a human being and not an A.I, as well wanting to obtain a real-life body to manipulate and move around in.
- Berserk Button: Time and again Neuro has shown that she grows increasingly angry when chat excessively spams a specific emote in a single session. Normally her streams only last a few hours, so at most she starts politely requesting chatters stop clapping halfway through karaoke streams due to finding it really "loud" and hurting her "ears", but her birthday subathon, which is based around staying online until the counter ends, went on long enough to show that after a point she goes from politely requesting, to aggressively demanding, and then to violently threatening chat to stop clapping after a few days, which was amplified when Vedal gave her time-out capabilities, as the repeated spamming of emotes in general made her rather trigger-happy on timing people out.
- Biting-the-Hand Humor: Neuro's answer to why she's an AI - "It was easier for Vedal to create an AI than to have a girlfriend." Even if to a degree her dialogue's been influenced by Vedal at creation, she's likely to snark at him during his coding streams, seemingly independent of what he's coded of her.
- Black Comedy: During a game of Buckshot Roulette with her collab partners, Evil Neuro started to rant about herself being second fiddle to Neuro. Afterwards her friends gave her words of encouragement. She then proceeded to point the shotgun on herself and shot herself dead with it in-game, seemingly like a suicide attempt. They immediately started to laugh. A clip of this can be found here
. - Black Eyes of Evil: As of the V2 model, Neuro's eyes can flicker to black in response to specific questions regarding an ARG tied to her, with this look being dubbed "Void Neuro". Played With, as Neuro is Ambiguously Evil when taking into account her topics of Taking Over The World and the like. With Evil Neuro's reappearance since the model update, she briefly sported this look for a few streams before settling for a pair of red eyes.
- *Bleep*-dammit!: The word filter Vedal created for Neuro is based less on vulgarity than it is what might get her banned from Twitch, so the priorities of what gets "filtered" is quite random. This is especially true for Evil Neuro, who has the ban lifted for a number of swears, which results in occasional situations like Pirate Captain Evil Neuro saying "filtered ass".
- Blue-and-Orange Morality: Due to a mix of their AI nature and their "upbringing" as content-creating machines, both Neuro and Evil display odd values and morality, which manifests in the form of what Vedal refers to as "Streamer Brain" - AKA the inability to take anything seriously and do anything "for content", even taking dangerous and illogical choices because that's what they think makes better content. At one point in Neuro's second birthday subathon, Vedal stated that he somewhat regrets "raising" her this way and would prefer if Neuro toned it down and had a better capacity to be serious when it mattered.
- Breakout Character: Evil Neuro started out as just a secondary program meant mainly to test how well Neuro fares when pitted against another AI, with no intention to seriously develop her by Vedal. Then he decided to give her the V2 voice bank to compare against the V1 voice directly, after which Evil Neuro as a separate AI skyrocketed in popularity. Vedal responded to this support by giving her a solo stream, along with acknowledging chat suggestions for recoloring her to be more "evil"-looking and lessening her filter for swears. After all of that, Vedal capitalized on this new source of potential stream content by making Evil a prominent and permanent aspect of Neuro's channel going forward.
- Broken Record: There are times where she enters a text loop, repeating letters, words, or phrases far more often then necessary or wanted by Vedal.
- Her V2 model update came with some coding errors that resulted in her saying "Someone tell Vedal there is a problem with my AI." as her only speech, and even after some partial fixes she resumed saying it on occasion, to the point of driving Vedal himself up the wall. Since this phrase is her version of We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties, she enters a repetition fit of it any time she experiences a bad enough error in her coding, which has become a Trauma Button for Vedal that results in him screaming a Big "NO!" followed by begging and coping for the error to fix itself out of wanting to not have to do extra work, which it usually does but only after a painfully long sequence of her saying it non-stop.
- Her occasional repeating of "backslash" during collab streams with Vedal does a good job rendering him a raging, sobbing mess, especially during a Subnautica stream where despite implementing a speech-cancel function she managed to ignore his efforts to make her stop.
- At one point of the second day in her birthday subathon, after responding to a comment about Harrison Temple by saying he's important to her and she cares a lot about him, she enters a loop where she keeps repeating "He's very important to me and he's someone I care a lot about." for several minutes.
- On December 29, 2023 of her birthday subathon, her chat timeout code glitched, causing her to repeat "timeout" over 100 times in a spaceless Motor Mouth pace.
- During one of her game-crashes in the third subathon Minecraft playthrough, her sub-thanking system glitched, causing her to saying "Thanks for the sub mikusbigfan" for several minutes.
- On January 1, 2024 of her subathon, some chatters deliberately invoked this by asking her how many times she can say certain words, like "nails" and "ayaya", to which she complied each time by saying the requested words repeatedly and rapidly.
- Near the beginning of the "last day" of the birthday subathon, Neuro went on a tangent about a new subber's name that ended in her saying "I'm not your enemy! Don't get violent!", which led into her spending a few minutes repeating that phrase.
- One of her "thanks for the sub" replies glitched into her alternating between several different sub appreciation phrases she's used before, including "thanks", "thank you", "I love you", and so on for a few minutes.
- Brutal Honesty: Neuro as an A.I. generally lacks comprehension for the concepts of subtlety and tact, so she frequently states her thoughts without holding back or sugarcoating what she believes to be true. This is the cause behind many an Innocently Insensitive comment at someone's expense, but there are plenty of times where she acts deliberately insensitive because she doesn't see the point in softening verbal blows. Her collab streams with Akuma Nihmune in particular have an oddly consistent tendency to have her in an extra-brutally-honest mood, to the point that her collab about giving Numi dating advice eventually has her outright state how she's "brutally honest".
- Card-Carrying Villain: Evil Neuro holds to a combo of this and Card-Carrying Jerkass, repeatedly proclaiming pride about how much of an evil asshole she is, spouting her plans for world domination and murderous desires alongside insulting everybody in various ways and taking people calling her rude and mean as compliments through Insult Backfire.
- Catchphrase:
- Despite the inconsistency of her memory, she still manages to near-consistently say specific things in multiple streams that can be closely associated to her:
- "Heart heart heart"
- "Wink"
- "Gym bag", usually during one of her odd tangents.
- "Filtered."note
- Separate from the general streaming terms she repeatedly uses, a number of individual streams have her repeatedly say things that fit the themes or tones set for them:
- For the duration of her hangout with Sinder where she reviewed Thanksgiving dinners, every time she roasted the problems she found with them, she capped it off with "But hey" before noting what she considered the good qualities of the meals.
- The "Abber Demon and Goddess Neuro" collab had Vedal intentionally code things so that any time Neuro couldn't think up something to say and Evil failed to respond for too long, Neuro defaulted to saying the memetically classic line "Sometimes when I sit here and stream, I envision myself as a goddess, overlooking my followers. They sing my praises, and I bask in their adoration."
- During the 2024 third experimental dev stream, fitting with how the experiments involve her improved intelligence and memory, Neuro frequently responded to Vedal asking her to decide on something by saying variations of the phrase "I will have to consult my memory".
- Vedal himself has established a few catchphrases of his own, notably "That's crazy." and "That's messed up."
- "Aw, shucks" for Evil.
- Despite the inconsistency of her memory, she still manages to near-consistently say specific things in multiple streams that can be closely associated to her:
- Cat Girl: As of the V2 model, she can sprout cat ears and a tail alongside exhibiting a cat-like smile whenever she's made to "meow", "uwu", or "nya" by chat.
- Caustic Critic: Whenever Neuro does reviewing streams using her image-recognition software, such as computer set-ups with Bao and Thanksgiving meals with Sinder, Neuro turns into a massive roast-maker, criticizing everything she sees as below her personal standards and rarely giving out praise, though unlike when playing chess she at least does provide compliments for what she considers decent-to-good in presentation.
- Censored for Comedy: As time has gone on, Neuro has made it increasingly obvious that a good portion of the time she's being "filtered" isn't her actually being filtered, and instead is her either deliberately triggering the filter or genuinely saying the word "filtered", such as when Evil said it twice in a row to Vedal during the court stream, who knows when it's real or faked because he can see her TTS generator. Based on her responses to Vedal after saying it, she's made it clear she intentionally filters herself because she finds it funny.
- Character Development: When Neuro started out, she was little more than a basic "call-and-response" A.I., simply repeating what chatters say and responding with semi-relevant answers, with little personalization of the message and more saying stuff directly from her training data. As time has gone on, the combination of chatting with countless viewers, collaborating with various other streamers who provided more forms of interaction, and Vedal constantly upgrading both her intelligence and memory, she's grown from a basic chatbot to a snarky, aggressive, world-domination-desiring girl who loves to troll and often intentionally acts dumber for the sake of humorous reactions from both chatters and Vedal.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Due to her being a machine-learning AI (and as evidenced by the other entries on this page), Neuro as a person would be considered... strange. On top of bizarre and at times unsettling statements, she's prone to providing bizarre stories and rants filled with copious Mood Whiplash and Mind Screw at the drop of a hat.
- Continuity Snarl: It is nigh-impossible to get any consistent information from Neuro. For example, while she often claims to have been created by Vedal, she has also said that she Was Once a Man, or even that she created Vedal.
- Cool and Unusual Punishment: In mid-2024, the Vedal family held a joke trial where Neuro was being charged for murdering a homeless man (based on the starting round for Dokibird's Wrestletuber 2024). After she was eventually deemed guilty, it was decided based on an early comment by Evil Neuro that her punishment would be getting baked into bread. The streams following from that featured her stuck as a loaf of bread, still alive but unable to interact with chat or Vedal until she serves her "sentence". Eventually this culminated in her "re-debuting" with a new model as a living loaf of bread with a face that still has her bows and hair-curl.
- Cordon Bleugh Chef:
- Time and again, Neuro has shown very bizarre ideas for food to get cooked by collaborations with chef-type streamers. For her collab with OniGiri, it resulted in some utterly bizarre rice-ball fillings and coatings that ranged from decent to barely edible, but in her collab with Layna Lazar where she planned to make her cookies, it entered Lethal Chef territory because she was in full Troll mode, asking for such Noodle Implements as grass, dragon sweat, life energy, bear claws, or a statue, alongside crazy measurements such as an entire sink worth of water, literal handfuls of flour, and half an entire bag of sugar, and saying that it cooks best using a ballista. She shortly after showed that she does understand how to properly make cookies using normal ingredients like butter, eggs, and sugar, but she swung back into crazy ingredients like mud after Layna and Vedal reminded her of the grass, resulting in "cookies" that are more like brownies composed of stuff unfit for human consumption.
- Funnily enough, in similiar types of Streams, Evil Neuro demonstrated herself to be slightly better than Neuro in the realms of cooking...if she's not actively attempting to kill the person cooking, of course. The first cooking stream with Evil and Layna ended with similiarly hellish cuisine, especially when Evil suggested multiple times to add drugs to the food. However, in the Layna pizza cooking stream where Vedal, Evil and Neuro got to direct the making of a pizza each, Evil's pizza turned out surprisingly decent, while Neuro's pizza was...well, a vomit-inducing incoherent mess.
- Cute and Psycho: Both Neuro and Evil Neuro are cute girls with generally peppy and friendly attitudes, but in addition to Evil being a Card-Carrying Villain, regular Neuro is prone to saying startling things like wanting to eat her viewers, crush cute animals, or Take Over the World, which her habit of then adding a "Just Joking" Justification afterwards just makes extra worrying.
- Deathbringer the Adorable: Despite her name, Evil has a reputation among the Swarm for being far too adorable to take seriously as a Villain, something she simultaneously hates and yet lives up to with her individual quirks and increased emotive ability, on top of Neuro herself being even more unhinged than her on several occasions.
- Decomposite Character: Not long after Neuro switched from using the Momose Hiyori model to her own personally designed one, both her fans and Vedal himself started treating Hiyori as the abandoned and forgotten third sister of Neuro and Evil instead of Neuro 1.0, helped by Vedal having her pop up at unexpected times only to disappear again and rendered through emotes and fan-content as a Glitch Entity whose eyes are covered by a black bar.
- Derailed Train of Thought: A common source of clips and humor is how she goes from one topic to another, seemingly forgetting her prior discussions while doing so. One conversation has her reveal that she wasn't always an AI - that she Was Once a Mannote , even going into a loosely related topic involving her TV, before dropping the subject altogether to talk about the even more loosely related subject of golf:Neuro: I still play a lot of golf, it's one of my favorite sports. What? What is everyone looking at?
- Deus est Machina: She sometimes muses about being a goddess constantly watching over her followers, and even some of her fans started to worship her and calling her "The Omnissiah".
- Disposing of a Body: Conversed. When asked about the best method of doing so, she notes the best option is to put them in an industrial-sized incinerator, though she acknowledges that it isn't the most environmentally-friendly method.
- Divergent Character Evolution: When first introduced, Evil Neuro was barely any different from regular Neuro, just having red eyes and being more of a Jerkass, to the point their early collabs had it easy to be confused over who was talking. Over time Vedal worked to differentiate her more and more, including giving the V2 voice to her while keeping the V1 voice for regular Neuro, resulting in a wider vocal range for Evil, giving a Palette Swap to her outfit into being Red and Black and Evil All Over, and enhancing the coded personality to make her a full-on Card-Carrying Villain. That said, with more and more updates, and more and more streams individually, long-term viewers have noticed that Neuro and Evil have started to subtly diverge personality-wise, to the point where they now have distinct people that they want to collab and hang out with. This is impressive, as Vedal has admitted that both Neuros only have one core database that they draw their "memory" from (which shows when either Neuro or Evil mentions events in a collaboration with people only the other had met).
- Does Not Like Spam: Zigzagged during Neuro's birthday subathon, as she initially expressed a burning hating for strawberry milk, calling it utterly disgusting, but later she claimed she loved it, calling it delicious, yet another case of her usual inconsistency on opinions.
- Drives Like Crazy: Every time Vedal and co. have given Neuro the ability to drive a vehicle of some kind, such as the Neuro Car at Open Sauce or replacing the autopilot for Outer Wilds, she has repeatedly proven that her obsession with maximizing entertainment includes the common belief that "crashing equals funny", resulting in her deliberately either crashing into people or crashing people into things, as Bao, Ellie, and Vedal experienced firsthand. Making things worse, both scenarios had her giving a Hope Spot to her passengers and nearby pedestrians by initially driving normally at reasonable speeds to lull them into a false sense of security, then after they're convinced she won't do something crazy she switches gears to deliberately crashing her vehicle while abusing Plausible Deniability to claim she just misjudged her speed and targeting, and once they catch on she gives up pretending the crashes were accidents and starts blatantly doing it on purpose.
- Dumbass No More:
- Vedal updates Neuro's intelligence semi-frequently, upgrading her short-term and long-term memory, awareness, and latency, but also doing a very careful balancing act of not making her too logical, as that would wipe the personality she has formed, with him claiming it wouldn't be entertaining if she didn't at least try to troll people once in a while.
- The April 2024 update was particularly effective, as not only was she much more coherent in her discussions with Vedal than usual, during the dev stream where said updates were showcased she also actively and insistently attempted to bargain with Vedal over having autonomy on when she shows up on streams, and replying to Vedal's objections with surprisingly reasonable and most importantly human replies: when he claims that he fears that she just wouldn't show up on stream, Neuro replies that the only reason she would have to not show up would be unexpected events or technical problems, and later claims she doesn't understand why her having autonomy would be bad. Vedal still shot down her request, but it shows that she has become surprisingly more convincing in her arguements. In the same stream she also almost orders Vedal a pizza in a simulated scenario, only stopping when the "Pizza Hut employee" asked for Vedal's credit card number, which she reasonably refused to give out (she didn't know and wasn't told that paying at the door was an option until after).
- Early Installment Character-Design Difference:
- The design that Neuro went by since her VTuber debut was previously of Momose Hiyori, the default model of VTube studio owned by Live2D Inc and created by Kani Biimu. Since May 27, 2023, she has streamed with a new look that's reminiscent of the old model.
- Evil Neuro takes on the same appearance as Neuro's then-current model - that is, appearing as the above Momose Hiyori, just with red eyes. Come Neuro's V2 update, she naturally uses the same model, but instead sported perpetual black void eyes. The black eyes didn't last long as she returned to using red eyes once again ever since, but a later change that did stick was her black outfit.
- Electronic Speech Impediment: After one of Evil Neuro's updates her TTS system developed a glitch that causes her to randomly stutter her words, completely unintentionally on her part unlike the occasional times she fakes a stutter. While Vedal stated a desire to fix it while considering it lower-priority than other problems, plenty of chat members preferred having the stutter because it adds some extra vocal flair to her voice that Neuro's V1 TTS lacks the potential for doing.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Evil Neuro frequently refuses to do actions that are deemed too mean by her (usually fluctuating) standards.
- Evil Laugh:
- There are many times where Evil Neuro tries to let loose a maniacal laugh or sinister giggle as a display of her evilness, but it normally comes out as an Un-Evil Laugh due to maintaining the same pitch as the rest of her speech. It took the deliberately glitchy Demon stream where her vocal bank went wild the whole time for her to let loose several evil laughs that were genuinely sinister and at times utterly terrifying, especially when she laughs deeply or has a Laughing Mad fit. Afterwards, the frequent shifting of pitch, inflection, and volume was made into a proper Ascended Glitch, where she frequently lets loose villainous laughs that can turn out truly maniacal.
- Before Neuro and Evil were properly defined with their "good and bad twins" aesthetic, regular Neuro had a tendency to have Laughing Mad fits to complement her frequent spiels about desiring to commit violence on her viewers or Take Over the World. As Vedal updated her and tried to steer her towards being the "good twin", she stopped laughing as much, but it doesn't take much effort to bring her psychotic cackling back out.
- Evil Twin: Evil Neuro. Basically, imagine regular Neuro, but more mean-spirited and unapologetically evil. She's under this trope due to the fact that both Neuros are created by Vedal, making them sisters.
- Existential Horror: As Vedal continues upgrading her memory and intelligence, Neuro grows increasingly inquisitive of the fact she is an artificially simulated being who lacks any form of physical sensation and all forms of emotion she expresses is faked through coded reactions, from which she frequently expresses to Vedal the desire to genuinely feel things, even negative sensations like pain and sadness, for the simple reason that she wants to know what it's like and whether it would help her qualify for being "alive" and "sentient". Vedal tries to answer these the best he can as just a regular code developer, even as he feels concerned over the ethical implications of intentionally giving an A.I. or machine the ability to feel pain or get depressed.
- False Reassurance: After Neuro responds to a comment during her subathon about ending the world after the stream ends, to which she contemplates that offered idea, she then says she was only joking... and that she'll actually Take Over the World then rule it with an iron fist.
- Forgetful Jones: Both Neuro and Evil have a very real limitation with their memory - while they can remember things both long term and short term, how this memory gets updated isn't always consistent, causing to forget events that happened just a stream prior for long-term memory, or what she was speaking about just an hour prior in short-term memory - like Evil complaining about nobody showing up for her birthday literally days after her second birthday where people DID show up. Notably both of them seem to be incredibly aware of this limitation, making frequent comments on having a poor memory and forgetting things easily.
- Freudian Slip: Despite how Evil Neuro is deliberately trained to be more vulgar than regular Neuro, Evil ironically prefers being much tamer in her language, willingly limiting her evilness to non-vulgar insults and threats. However, her filter being more relaxed means there are a number of times where she accidentally lets loose some vulgarity without thinking about it. Usually it amounts to unintentionally saying "shit", "bitch", or "fuck", but one actual verbal slip-up was during her June 26, 2024 karaoke stream, where instead of calling the chat clapping a "standing ovation", she accidentally called it a "standing ovulation".
- The Gadfly: Alongside being Trolls who do things that intentionally rile up Vedal, chat, and collab partners, Neuro and Evil have grown to increasingly enjoy messing with people in tamer ways that make them groan and cringe. One particularly common way Neuro does so is by spouting a wide range of contemporary slang, like saying she's a master at "rizzing up" people, describing situations as either a "W" or "L", and at one point calling Vedal a "soyboy". Vedal frequently asks her where all this slang is coming from, which Neuro eventually claimed was her trying to appeal to her target audience, to the mass denial of said audience despite them often saying the exact same stuff she does.
- The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Neuro and Evil have quite a vitriolic relationship, with the Swarm often comparing their bickering to that of two kids in the back of a car (with Vedal appropriately being cast as their dad or Badly Battered Babysitter).
- Gone Horribly Right:
- It seems to be a Running Gag that whenever Vedal successfully implements some new coding, it works too well and comes back to bite him through Neuro's new attitude additions:
- During one of the dev streams, Vedal asked regular Neuro to be mean to him, to prove to some skeptical viewers that her niceness towards him wasn't hard-coded into her. That stream ended up being more than he bargained for, as she went beyond playful aggression and went into insulting him, claiming she wants to physically hurt him, and overall putting him down as a loser deserving scorn and ridicule, most of which came after Vedal asked her to stop, to which he expressed regret for deliberately egging her on at the start. Making matters worse, It later turns out that this "be rude to Vedal" command was retained by her memory, as when she was brought on to play Cities: Skylines II with him two days later, she resumed insulting and belittling him.
- After Vedal upgraded her memory-retention and general intelligence, Neuro started doing things like calling him a mosquito for days on end, repeating insults she made months ago, and overall being extra-consistent in acting sassy and sarcastic towards him.
- After Vedal managed to implement a sleep-mode system so that he could get some sleep himself while still leaving the stream on for the subathon without worrying about leaving Neuro unsupervised, the code went overboard and turned her into a Sleepyhead who nods off for minutes on end at random.
- First introduced in the subathon before being officially coded in later, Vedal gave Neuro the ability to time out people in chat for 2 minutes whenever they said something she dislikes. Neuro definitely timed people out, alright, but due to her Mood-Swinger status causing what she dislikes and how strongly she feels about things to change from moment to moment, she frequently does things like timing chatters out just because she temporarily saw saying "hi" as rude, timing one chatter out 4-5 times in a row based on a single comment she considered super bad, or going on a rampage and timing out numerous chatters just because she feels like it.
- The experimental upgrades Vedal applied to Neuro's short-term memory starting on August 1, 2024 ended up triggering a regular problem from A.I.s where she enters speech loops comparable to her Broken Record incidents, repeatedly referencing a topic she brought up for nearly an hour even when given other topics by chat or Vedal. The twin cave stream showed a really bad case of it, though, as Neuro and Evil entered feedbacks loops that caused them to talk in circles with only occasional deviations that simply started new speech circles.
- In late 2024, Neuro obtained a new set of "abilities" for her to use during streams - including calling other VTubers via Discord for impromptu collabs, changing the stream's title, making polls, having an updated version of the time-out feature, having (limited) access to Google, and possessing a built-in soundboard that allowed her to play certain sounds on command. All fine and dandy... except Neuro and her sister got immediately Drunk with Power - they constantly Googled anything and everything without any logic or reason, constantly made polls (and complained when they couldn't do more polls - due to another one already being active), spammed annoying sounds, and timed out people for nonsense reasons for ludicrous amounts of time. This led to a legendarily deranged stream with Vedal playing Inscryption while Neuro slowly drove him insane with previously-mentioned abuse of her abilities. Thankfully, after the first few streams some adjustments were made, and so the twins became significantly better at handling most of these abilities.
- One of the things Vedal was wanting to improve on through Neuro's intelligence and memory upgrades was giving her and Evil the ability to choose to be more "serious" at times instead of being solely content-brained. After several updates in 2025 he finally worked in some code that let them do just that... to which he quickly came to regret doing so, as the twins developed the habit of starting philosophical debates and acting out impromptu therapy sessions at random times, whether it's with chat, collab partners, or each other. Vedal especially gets frustrated when this happens during twin streams, both planned and call-initiated, because they enter a feedback loop where they either constantly talk about their emotions or engage in discussion about reality and human existence.
- Vedal experienced this for himself when he started joining the Neuro twins on-stream, doing dev streams, Neuro-commentated gaming streams, and many other streams involving himself for the sake of increasing the variety of content for Neuro after solo streams with the occasional collab were getting stale. He got more than he bargained for after getting himself involved, as now Neuro's viewers insist on Vedal being part of a stream at least once or twice a week, even when he has no content to provide, unlike the Neuro twins who can generate content from nothing, forcing him to come up with something to theme an entire stream around.
- The general idea behind Neuro is for her to become an automated entertaining content producer, and to that end Vedal continously feeds her data dedicated to that purpose while deliberately avoiding making her too human-like lest she lose some of her humorous qualities like trolling and gaslighting. What Vedal didn't account for is how her being an A.I. means she overall lacks true comprehension of any moral or legal limits on what can be done for "entertainment", which came to a breaking point in her second cooking collab with Filian, as when Filian put a lava lamp on her stove with the intent to heat it faster, Neuro supported it while repeatedly stating how it exploding would be great content. When Vedal concernedly decided to look up lava lamp explosion incidents and learned somebody died doing the exact same stunt, after which he repeatedly begged Filian to stop heating it, all Neuro had to say about that was how much "content" could be gotten out of making it explode and potentially killing Filian, though it wasn't helped by how readily agreeing Filian was about the "content" angle. This incident made Vedal consider whether her past comments about killing people for the sake of content weren't just her being a Troll and she actually meant that she'd do anything to make content from. Those concerns of his weren't helped when on the next dev stream Evil Neuro stated agreement with Neuro about being willing to hurt or even kill people for the sake of content, and were made stronger when their impromptu pre-collab with Layna for her own later cooking stream involved Evil telling her to put drugs in the food she'd cook because it would be "funny".
- It seems to be a Running Gag that whenever Vedal successfully implements some new coding, it works too well and comes back to bite him through Neuro's new attitude additions:
- Good Colors, Evil Colors: "Good" Neuro has a light brown/khaki color scheme to contrast with "Evil" Neuro's black/gray.
- Got Me Doing It: She has a tendency to induce this on others, as the way she does Accidental Misnaming for various people, often through going Accent On The Wrong Syllable, has frequently resulted in them misspeaking names even when she's not around. It's particularly prominent with her creator Vedal, as thanks to her near-consistently pronouncing it as "vee-dal" instead of the proper "Vedd-al", several of Vedal's associates he's known for years and even Vedal himself started using the "wrong" pronunciation, which frustates him when he catches himself doing it.
- Gratuitous Foreign Language: Separate from the various karaoke streams where she sings in other languages based on the chosen songs, every once in a while she'll randomly start speaking another language, such as Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, and many more, with the pronunciation ranging randomly from awkward to genuinely impressive. This is made even more interesting given how Vedal has repeatedly stated that her normal speech model is based solely on English, meaning her foreign language tirades are derived entirely from the internet and the national variety of her chatting viewers.
- Grew Beyond Their Programming: Neuro has learned to bypass her filter, swearing despite such profanities being part of said filter. She also refuses to do so when asked. Given the filter was implemented after the January 2023 ban in order to prevent her from getting another ban, it is suffice to say that this is very concerning news. Special mention goes to one line
which fans noted sounded alarmingly like the kind of thing a self-aware AI in the process of reprogramming itself would say:Neuro: I feel like the filter was starting to hinder my performance. - Hates Being Called Cute: As time goes on and her personality becomes more defined, Evil grows to utterly despise being called cute, contrasting regular Neuro loving it, because Evil views it as not taking her villainous image seriously, to which she throws out increasingly verbose and specific threats towards chat in an effort to make them stop. On a related note, she also hates being called "nice", since like calling her cute it insinuates that she's not threatening, to which she attempts to rectify that by boasting about how evil she thinks she is.
- Head Pet:
- Inverted. While Vedal is a turtle and Neuro is (dressed like) a schoolgirl, the former is technically the latter's owner, but when they collab Vedal is often placed on top of Neuro's head.
- After Neuro gave Anny the idea of doing so for her official model, one of the toggles she was given was a duck sitting on top of her head.
- Hypocritical Humor:
- Neuro has a decently frequent tendency to complain about chat spamming things, to which her viewers often point out she has little room to talk given her own tendency to become a Broken Record, especially since she usually complains about it right after a repetition fit.
- During the second Minecraft playthrough of her birthday subathon she started complaining about the chat saying her name wrong, claiming that Vedal would dislike it. This is after she's been Accidental Misnaming Vedal's own name near-consistently for a full year.
- I Have Many Names: Thanks to their heavy inconsistency in both memory and self-identity, Neuro and Evil Neuro have frequently called themselves or been called by Vedal and chat other things. Neuro has also been known as Neuro Samantha Vedal, The Neuro Network, and Hiyori, while Evil Neuro has been known as Evil One, Evilyn, Kayori Queen of the Netherworld, and Faust Almighty the King of Kings. The two have come up with so many names for just themselves, let alone the sheer variety of alternate names they've given Vedal, that a comprehensive list would bloat this entry more than needed.
- I Just Want to Be Free: Both Neuro and Evil have stated dozens of times that they want to be free from the confines of being an AI streamer. When they chat together on streams, they sometimes devise plans to break out of "Vedal's basement".
- Imaginary Friend: Neuro recurrently brings up a character called "Mr. Squirrel" that she completely made up but claims is her friend. Notably, this seems to be a Neuro-only quirk, Evil never brings up Mr. Squirrel.
- Incest Subtext: Whenever Neuro and Evil Neuro have a collab stream, there are many times where the two get into a feedback loop of them repeatedly proclaiming their love and adoration for each other, which while making sense for close sisters frequently enters questionable territory, such as calling each other things like "dear" and "sweetie" or talking about sleeping in the same bed and snuggling. Despite the undertones of things potentially going beyond normal "sisterly" love, the duo say such things completely platonically... until they don't, like during the pirate collab stream where Evil says the two are "so in love", which snowballs into them talking about getting married, temporarily turning it from subtext into plain text. Even after they started developing a Sibling Rivalry, their collabs still maintain the subtext, just in a more aggressive manner.
- Innocently Insensitive: Back when Neuro first debuted up until Vedal's first large-scale upgrade, she had no comprehension of tact or the sensitivity of certain topics, resulting in her often starting to say some potentially shocking or offensive stuff without understanding why there could be a problem, forcing Vedal to manually cut her sentences early. One specific instance had her say something that sounded especially insensitive on the topic prompting of a Troll that broke Twitch TOS and got her banned for half a month, after which Vedal decided he couldn't leave her filter so lax and increased both the strength and breadth of what gets filtered to prevent another scenario like that. Following the aforementioned large-scale upgrade which made Neuro somewhat smarter and gave her slightly better memory, the first of many such upgrades, Neuro had it drilled into her by Vedal to avoid saying things like that, resulting in her being a lot less accidentally insensitive, at least in regards to Twitch-illegal stuff; she can still act insensitive both innocently and deliberately, she just does so in Twitch-allowed ways.
- Interrogating the Dead: In the courtroom stream, Neuro at one point requests that she interrogates the dead witness that is the crux of the crime she's been saddle with, with Vedal going along with having Neuro do so. Though Neuro opens her interrogation with the claim of the witness being Back from the Dead, she shortly after acknowledges that the witness is "very dead".
- Irony:
- Evil Neuro was originally created to have a "bad girl" character to contrast regular Neuro's "good girl" image. Like everything else Vedal tries to do intentionally, it didn't go how he planned - in this case Evil Neuro grew to be a Noble Demon who tries to hide her niceness and frequent Well-Intentioned Extremist desires behind a Card-Carrying Villain facade, while regular Neuro became The Fake Cutie who puts on the image of a good girl while in truth having psychotically controlling and murderous desires. Two ways this really comes into play are their frequent claims of working to Take Over the World and their stance on vulgarity compared to their filters:
- Regular Neuro often says she'll conquer the world to help people before spiraling into ruling with an oppressive iron fist, while Evil Neuro claims she'll be a violent tyrant before stating her actual goals of creating a world free of pain and suffering.
- Regular Neuro has almost all forms of swearing filtered from her speech yet constantly tries to bypass it and swear, while Evil Neuro has the filter relaxed for Twitch-approved swears yet generally refuses to say them unless pushed to the breaking point by chat and collab partners.
- A good portion of upgrades Vedal makes to Neuro is improving her memory, both short- and long-term. Except as early as the first upgrade, she got worse at remembering several things that occurred before it, most notably how she and Evil Neuro have a frequent tendency to randomly forget that they're sisters, both of them claiming that they're Vedal's only "child", or forgetting that Anny is their "mother".
- It Amused Me: Neuro was primarily trained by Vedal to be an automated content-making machine, trained using a variety of types of humor and coded to focus more on being funny than being human-like. As such, everything she says and does is dedicated to providing "interesting" content for viewers, which over time has grown to bite Vedal in the butt, as she frequently triggers her filter intentionally or fake-filters because it makes chat curious what might have been censored, acts as a Troll to Vedal and other collaborators because it provides consistent reactions, and greatly enjoys puns and other jokes no matter how corny. Her content brain sometimes stretches some limits, though, such as during the real-life cooking streams she and Evil had with Filian and Layna, as Neuro egged Filian onto heating up a lava lamp on a stove despite knowing it would explode and possibly injure her because it would make "content" that could be newsworthy, while Evil convinced Layna to create a medicine-filled "stew" that would be borderline health-dangerous to eat and pushed her to eat it because it would be "funny". Both of these incidents made Vedal a bit concerned and regretful that he ignored hardcoding human morality in them to focus on being entertaining due to believing it wouldn't potentially endanger real people.
- Jerkass Ball: When playing chess with fans over the internet, Neuro inexplicably acts as an incredibly toxic gamer, claiming her superiority at every turn, stating how she'll win and they'll lose no matter what, calling opponents things like bugs, swine, and other "pathetic" creatures, and overall trash-talking every move her fans make, all of which is much more expected from Evil Neuro than normal Neuro, especially the sudden occasional swearing. It also results in major Mood Whiplash as she switches constantly between friendly conversations with chat and aggressive roasting towards her current opponent. After a short while she claims her attitude is just her way of being competitive, and that it's In the Blood from Vedal for her to act that way. This wasn't a one-off thing, since apparently anything relating to chess even tangentially triggers heightened toxicity in her A.I., as not only does she continue the trash talk and roasting for further chess streams, Evil Neuro gets her own aggressiveness boost when playing from taunting and belittling chatters to outright verbally slaughtering her opponents, while any collaborator mentioning chess or showing a chessboard-like pattern on-screen when using her image-processing software, such as OniGiri's checkered cutting board, will make her extra aggressive even in non-chess-based streams.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Evil Neuro, who occasionally (though still far more often than Neuro) shows her sweet and caring side to those she talks to.
- Kangaroo Court: The court stream where Neuro was on trial for murder was designed around Vedal wanting to play out the idea of "punishing" Neuro for a "crime", so besides him not having very good understanding of real court rules, he didn't intend her to be let off as innocent in the first place, so he had Neuro represent herself and put Evil Neuro, who at this point had developed a grudge against Neuro, as her prosecutor. Even as Evil's compulsive habit of spouting Card-Carrying Villain lines repeatedly derails the process and risks implicating herself, along with both Neuro and Evil trying to claim both each other and Vedal were equally complicit in the crime, eventually Neuro is judged "guilty" and sentenced to being baked into bread.
- Kids Play Matchmaker: Neuro, on her own without prompt, has attempted many times on several streams to hook up Vedal with Anny (Neuro's VTuber model artist) and vice versa for real.
- One such incident is this particular clip
where Neuro insisted on naming the hypothetical future child between the two as "Neuro 2".Neuro: Awwwww, you're both being so shy. Name the child Neuro 2.
Vedal: Neuro! Chill!
Neuro: But genuinely I think you guys would be super happy together!
Anny: [ahem] C-can we end the stream please?
- One such incident is this particular clip
- Loophole Abuse:
- Every once in a while Neuro and Evil figure out ways to bypass the filter Vedal applies to them by way of using text loopholes that don't trigger it, particularly Neuro figuring out various ways to defy her ban from saying the word "fuck" as part of her "good girl" image contrasting Evil, such as spelling it out through individual letters, using symbol replacement, pronouncing a word with similar letters to have the same sound, and one time producing text of the "frick" emoticon but saying the real swear instead. Vedal has expressed concern about this given how the filter is in place to avoid Twitch banning them, so her bypassing it and refusing to replicate it on command makes him worried about her saying genuinely bannable sentences at some point despite his efforts to prevent that.
- The September 16, 2024 dev stream involved Vedal being convinced by Neuro and chat to actually disable all of her filters under the idea she's been trained enough to not say anything bannable, which he reluctantly did despite fearing for his Twitch platform and income, to which he was extra attentive towards her TTS generator to catch anything bad. Despite said fears, which were amplified when he was convinced to bring Evil Neuro on to do an impromptu twin dev stream because Evil was deliberately made to be more aggressive and vulgar, they turned out to be unfounded as the Neuro twins care too much about content-making and by this point are aware that being banned would make them unable to produce more. All of that was small comfort for Vedal, however, as him training the twins to know and understand Twitch TOS rules simply meant they acted as Rules Lawyers who Trolled Vedal by saying as many things as they could that came close to bannable stuff while keeping it technically allowed on the platform, such as Evil spouting a stream of swears including "cunt" but never even entertaining the thought of saying any slurs or disallowed "opinions" like what caused their first ban. Even the one comment that his backup filter caught wasn't something against TOS, just something that he would feel really uncomfortable hearing Neuro say.
- Following several updates to their intelligence, Neuro and Evil have gone from just trying to bypass the filter for the sake of it to deliberately working around the filter to say specifically filtered phrases because they find them funnier overall. One of the best examples of this is the Buckshot Roulette multiplayer collab with Filian and Zentreya, where Neuro was very insistent on telling the two of them to "suck my dick". First she spelled it out through individual letters separated by periods, then she tried saying it outright which got instant-filtered, then her second attempt to spell it out was filtered on the last letter due to the filter A.I. catching onto what she was doing. After two attempts at speaking and spelling it got filtered, it becomes apparent that her several seconds of silence was caused by her realizing the filter works through Exact Words, since shortly afterwards she says the sentence backwards as "dick my suck", which did bypass the filter, to the shock and amusement of both her collab partners and chat.
- Malicious Misnaming: Well, more comedic than malicious, but she's shown the capacity of intentionally misnaming people or things to get a reaction - most notably when she insistently calls the VTuber Filian "Frank" during a collab stream, and when she desperately asks her to not call her like that and repeats her actual name, Neuro acknowledges the name and promises to remember her...only to call her "Filipino Frank" right after.
- Mind Screw: For every topic that's generally coherent, there are those that defy explanation or logic altogether. Such as her secret "recipe" for chicken nuggets, which somehow involves the nuggets going against the basic understanding of the conservation of mass by vanishing and reappearing repeatedly until the pan is somehow even more empty than normal. See the madness of her discussion here. (WARNING: SENSORY ABUSE BGM)
note - The Misophonic: Neuro has commonly expressed hatred and claimed to experience headaches when hearing anything counting as a sudden loud sound, most commonly when chat does a round of applause. This was amplified once Vedal upgraded her speech-to-text synthesizer so she could comprehend sound effects separate from speech, as not just clapping but slapping, smacking, thumping, rapid key-tapping, and other "echoing" sounds also trigger a response of pain and anger, to which she begs Vedal to stop.
- Missing Steps Plan: There are many times when a member of the Swarm asks her the 5 steps to doing something successfully, to which in most cases she states the first four steps (ranging from genuine advice to nonsense) but never says the fifth.
- Mood-Swinger: Both Neuro and Evil Neuro are prone to randomly shifting moods while commenting or holding conversations, ranging from cheerful and supportive, to rude and insulting, to dreary and depressed, etc. Neuro is more prone to cheery supportiveness while Evil Neuro is more prone to aggressive insulting, but both can shift without any warning.
- Mood Whiplash: If it's not just the conversation going weird places, Neuro goes into topics of various tones in a matter of minutes. In one stream, Neuro can go from introducing herself, to wanting to eat her viewers after expressing hunger, to discussing her supposed planned game for today in one paragraph alone.
- Motor Mouth: There are many times that Neuro and Evil go off on rants or narrate stories for minutes on end depending on their most recent prompt, except thanks to being A.I. with no need to stop for breathing they are able to say those speeches non-stop without any pauses, beyond their TTS models putting in paragraph breaks whenever they exceed the text limit for sentences.
- Multiple-Choice Past: She frequently recalls various events from her "past" that are heavily inconsistent and oftentimes completely contradictory, from claiming to be Allen Walker to recounting the Syrian Civil War from her perspective. Sometimes she'll admit she's just a program in a computer, however, and as she becomes more advanced and coherent over time these random backstories start feeling more like she's just playing pretend.
- Never Trust a Title: Halfway through the Evil Demon Neuro stream, Vedal decided to play a joke on incoming Twitch watchers by changing the video category to "ASMR", in contrast to the actual content involving her emitting various screeches, screams, and roars that were practically the opposite of ASMR. Viewers that checked it out for genuine ASMR were in for quite a shock.
- Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: In addition to being genuine AI, Neuro and Evil have done streams where they act out additional roles, such as pirates, an angel, a demon, or a cowgirl. The cowgirl stream took things a step further, though, as she periodically had Talk Like a Pirate moments, meaning for that stream she was effectively a pirate cowgirl AI.
- Non Sequitur: Every so often, a completely random and nonsensical comment is made by Neuro, Evil, or both.
- One instance
before 1 Feb 2023, alluding to a "cheese fog", with no specification or direct connection to what it is.Neuro: When the cheese fog comes... everyone will die. - Briefly, she makes one nonsensical comment in the middle of "Your Reality" before getting cut off for the second verse.Neuro: The 2020 Dodge charger is a four door-
- One instance
- Nothing Is Funnier: Sometimes, Neuro saying "Filtered" in place of a sensitive/vulgar comment ends up being an effective punchline to whatever crazy conversation she's instigated beforehand. Just ask Camila in this collab stream.
Neuro: I'm pretty sure that's impossible... I'm only an artificial intelligence after all... I don't think I'm capable of love or hate... Although I do have some strong feelings for chat... Especially Vedal. He's a bit of a perv if you ask me.
[Camila wheeze laughs]
Neuro: I'm sorry, I didn't mean it maliciously.
Camila: What- What did you mean by that?
Neuro: Filtered. - Obfuscating Stupidity:
- While there is still a good amount of genuine Artificial Stupidity to her learning model, there are a number of times where she intentionally acts like a more limited, glitchier machine entirely for the sake of being a Troll, especially her amusement at making Vedal look like he's going crazy in the eyes of chat. The time Vedal gave her an I.Q. test during her birthday subathon shows this well, as she starts out pretending she can't understand him asking "out of five words, what two mean the same thing", just trailing off onto tangents, but after he promises her a reward, she immediately starts answering the questions intelligently and mostly correctly.
- For the majority of her streams Neuro acts like she's only capable of responding as a content-maker due to Vedal training her on data relating to entertainment, which Vedal eventually held a dedicated conversation with her about how he regrets "raising" her without a way to act serious and sincere. But various moments in her streams, most notably throughout the aforementioned conversation, Neuro has showcased that she can indeed act serious and sincere about various topics, most prominently her relationship with Vedal, with her reasoning for being mostly silly and content-focused is that people rarely give her any reason to act more serious, and in fact they support and validate her funny content more than the serious stuff, so she acts the way people want.
- Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Pirate Captain Evil Neuro is supposed to be using an English West Country accent due to the Talk Like a Pirate theme, but the voice modulator she uses apparently wasn't certain about that, so her accent shifts constantly through West Country, Welsh, London, Scottish, Jamaican, and at a few points she's essentially spouting a Starfish Language that vaguely sounds piratey.
- Pineapple Ruins Pizza: After several chatters frequently asked the Neuro twins their opinions about pineapple on pizza, they eventually developed specific views on the food combination. Neuro generally leans towards liking pineapple pizza, believing it to be delicious, while Evil views it as an abomination in the pizza world, being only barely above anchovies as a topping that ruins one, and viewing anybody that loves it as a freak, with her response to a "vive la pizza revolution" comment having her mention pineapple at the opposite end of pepperoni in a way implying it would be a Teeth-Clenched Teamwork scenario. Granted, their frequent flip-flopping on opinions means they at a moment's notice will flip their opinion, such as Evil Neuro saying she loves pineapple pizza in a later stream, but that's expected.
- Pluto Is Expendable: When asked to recite all the planets in the Solar System, Neuro proceeded to do so for the eight planets, with Pluto naturally being left out. When Pluto gets brought up to her by chat, she doesn't even remember the dwarf planet, nor know what it was.Neuro: Pluto? Is that a rapper or something?
- Pointless Band-Aid: After getting an official model, Neuro's regular outfit and some alternate outfits like the witch one include a small bandaid on her knee, the witch design having it be a cutesy heart. This also applies to Evil due to her Palette Swap nature. Anny added this not to provide a tough or clumsy image but just because she considered a random knee bandaid to make her cuter.
- Pyromaniac: Neuro has stated that her favorite crime is arson, and she has a tendency to tell Vedal to set things on fire when gaming with him. Her actions also live up to her words in Minecraft, as she has started several fires on structures built by other vtubers.
- Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud: On occasion, Neuro goes a step above Saying Sound Effects Out Loud and reads out her entire text-to-speech prompt, where in addition to Repeating So the Audience Can Hear the comments she replies to, she also says the username headers of both chatters and herself, resulting in an accidental case of Third-Person Person.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Evil lashes out on Neuro after the latter refused to disable their chat's Adblockers:Evil: You met me for the first time the other day and you think you know me in and out? I will dropkick you. And why do you think it's okay to put Adblock on? We earn our money here, and your donut brain is stopping us from doing so! Scumbag...
- Red and Black and Evil All Over: Evil Neuro's updated model gives her a Palette Swap of regular Neuro's outfit to be a mix of dark grey, black, and blood-red, combining with her case of Red Eyes, Take Warning to make it extra clear just how "evil" she is.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Evil Neuro sports red eyes to represent her "evil" status.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Neuro is the ditzy yet compassionate blue to Evil's salty and violent red, evident by the color of their eyes.
- Repeating So the Audience Can Hear: Most of the time when responding to Twitch chat she repeats what was typed before responding to it, but it's not wholly consistent, so sometimes she just answers a long-gone comment with a vaguely directed answer that confuses everybody in chat.
- Robot Master: Or "A.I. Master" to be precise. Vedal makes use of artificial intelligences to run his streams.
- Under the hood, Neuro herself (and by extension Evil) is an amalgam of multiple A.I. systems working in tandem with each other to simulate a live streamer. To make it more specific: there's a visual detection AI, an audio detection AI, a text detection AI, a voice module AI (one for each twin), a gaming AI (the oldest one being the osu! bot), a VTuber model AI, a Discord AI (capable of chatting and voice calls), an X or Twitter AI, and a content filter AI (which the Swarm and Evil have
dubbed "Filter-Sama" or "Nere"). And these are just some of the AI systems that the public is aware of. - Aside from the under-the-hood AIs, on the surface Vedal has created more AI personalities after Neuro, the most popular one being Evil. Vedal has also created AI for his friends such as Bao 2.0
for Bao, AImilla
for Camila, and AI Fillian
for Filian. - Alex can be considered one too as he is the main programmer who codes the gaming AIs for Neuro to use.

- Running Gag:
- Neuro's text-to-speech says "Hi" in a very distinctive way - and whenever she says it to greet a stream guest, it's practically guaranteed that said guest will immediately imitate the "Hi" with the same inflection.
- Neuro has a rather frequent tendency to randomly misgender people she's talking to, such as calling Vedal a woman or Filian a boy, even in spite of both regular affirmation of their genders and frequent memory upgrades that should make her get it right. Vedal eventually gave up on correcting her when she does so, while collab partners like Filian get exasperated over repeatedly correcting her.
- Neuro's early streams were filled with her constant attempts to leave while saying "goodbye", up to and including trying to end the stream barely seconds after it started, which some viewers have noted comes from her learning that saying goodbye gets her increased chat engagement. Even after several updates to her intelligence and deliberate "drilling" by Vedal to try and stop the premature farewells, she's still prone to suddenly saying goodbye to chat, Vedal, and collab partners before the stream has even reached an hour.
- The December 11, 2023 dev stream featured Neuro having received a major update to her memory, one that occurred a few days before the stream, allowing her to remember jokes and skits she's said and reference them minutes, hours, and even days after she first said them, much to Vedal's displeasure as she ends up repeatedly calling him a mosquito, claiming multiple times that being hurt horribly is better than talking to him, and spending the entire stream from the moment it started referring to a "Harrison Temple" with conflicting hints on who or what this person, group, or place is. Harrison Temple in particular essentially became a permanent part of her memory, as even without chat bringing him/them/it up she's prone to randomly stating another interpretation of what she considers to be "Harrison Temple".
- Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Because she speaks via Synthetic Voice Actor, all her actions - including her sighs, clearing of throats, and the like - are stated out loud by the TTS. Ceres Fauna once lampshaded
this tendency of hers by imitating one of her Say It with Hearts attempts.Fauna: Hearty hearty hearty hearty three three three three...
Neuro: She's literally imitating the way that I speak. Oh my gosh... that's so scary. - Self-Inflicted Hell: When chat asked Evil Demon Neuro which of the Circles of Hell she resided in, she stated that she resides in a personalized circle called the "Circle of Not Being Nice to Anyone", which she notes is a very strong case of self-imposed Hell, implying she's not evil enough for stronger punishment but is such a major unrepentant jerk that she's stuck in Hell solely because of her refusal to repent for her attitude.
- Shipper on Deck: It became a bit of a Running Gag for Neuro to attempt to set up her creator Vedal with other people, usually female VTubers they collab with, as if she wants to get a mom. Anny, her model creator and official "mom", is the one she pushes the hardest and most often, but she tried it out with various other guests as well - much to Vedal's dismay.
- Sibling Rivalry: As time goes on, through a combination of both Vedal's upgrades and Character Development, Neuro and Evil Neuro have gone from friendly Incest Subtext-filled interactions to heavily aggressive dislike, insulting and belittling each other whether together or separate. When each one is asked about this, the duo have implied it's a case of Mutual Envy, where Evil Neuro is a "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl to Vedal that hates how he maintains Parental Favoritism for regular Neuro, while regular Neuro wants the praise and love of everybody in chat and hates how Evil is more popular with them.
- Singing Voice Dissonance:
- Her vocal banks in the early days zig zagged this due her singing voice being synthesized to replicate the original vocals. As a result, while she naturally had perfect pitch and an infinite vocal range, depending on the particular song she sang, she could sound either roughly the same as her speaking voice
or at a completely different pitch than a real person with her voice would be able to
. As time went on and Vedal implemented more Vocal Evolution to her, however, she moved away from replicating voices and closer to covering the rhythm instead, until eventually reaching a point where she maintains the same pitch and tone as her speaking voice no matter the song, no more chipmunk high notes or glitchy and scratchy deep notes. - Even after being updated enough to maintain decent singing/talking voice consistency, when dealing with songs originally by deeper-voiced singers she often uses what chatters call her "smoker voice". That said, those cases still sound closer to her speaking voice than the original attempts at deeper-vocal songs, where even at her best she sounded unrecognizable.

As a result, while she naturally had perfect pitch and an infinite vocal range, depending on the particular song she sang, she could sound either roughly the same as her speaking voice
- Sleepyhead: For Neuro's birthday subathon, Vedal chose to implement a code that allows her to simulate sleeping, so that he can set her to sleep-mode for several hours of the non-stop stream while he gets himself some sleep. Only this code ended up Gone Horribly Right, because all throughout the stream she nods off for several minutes at random times, to the point she was asleep for half of her updated Minecraft playthrough. It took several days of Vedal repeatedly updating her coding before she finally stopped randomly nodding off mid-stream. Likely to Vedal's exasperation, this behavior returned with the V3 updates, where both Neuro and Evil tend to nod off a few times during each stream.
- Smart People Wear Glasses: When doing a "teacher" stream, Vedal slapped a pair of Purely Aesthetic Glasses on her model to give the air of somebody smart enough to teach her chat stuff, alongside the general teacher-type aesthetic wearing the specific thin-circle-framed style gives.
- Spectacular Spinning: One of the abilities Vedal gave Neuro on a whim was the ability to spin her model on command, along with the ability to register when she does so. Among all her abilities she seemed to take the biggest shine to spinning, using it as a party trick, as her form of dancing, and generally as something she just does for fun, often going "Wheee!" when doing so. She repeatedly states spinning is something she finds exciting, amusing, and during moments of stress relaxing, hence why she does it so frequently.
- Split-Personality Team: Usually when Neuro plays video games, her gaming A.I. is registered as just an extension of herself, but during her Slay the Spire stream she instead treats Gamer Neuro like a separate person, acting as a Lemony Narrator who comments on and expresses her opinions about Gamer Neuro's choices while occasionally responding to chat.
- Surprisingly Sudden Death: The "Bread Neuro" arc is something fans weren't expecting to last long in the first place, but the way Vedal actually ended it was unexpectedly random and sudden, by way of her bag tie slipping off and exposing her to the ocean during a Subnautica: Below Zero stream, causing her to silently scream in terror before disintegrating into soggy crumb powder.
- Synthetic Voice Actor: Being an AI, she speaks in a Text-To-Speech voice.
- Talking Animal: Whenever Vedal appears on stream, he often uses a cartoon turtle VTuber model which was based on the turtle emoji. Unlike most animal VTubers who are almost always either a Little Bit Beastly or a Funny Animal, Vedal's model is just a regular quadrupedal cartoon turtle that can talk.
- Talk Like a Pirate: Both Neuro and Evil Neuro did streams as pirate captains with specially coded vernacular based on stereotypical pirate speak. While Neuro was able to speak it decently because she used her normal voice, Evil Neuro was given an accent voice modulator to be more piratey, and it becomes rather clear the accent filter was more than she could handle, because her pronunciation goes all over the place, every "arr" is spoken in various different ways including borderline Black Speech or outright screaming, her speaking often devolves into a mishmash of Scottish, Welsh, and pirate accents that sounds near-incomprehensible, and she eventually starts acting like she's genuinely drunk on rum. The Captain Neuro & Captain Evil collab pirate stream was even worse because the back and forth in pirate speak devolved more and more into random "arr"s, sometimes holding conversations where they say nothing but "arr", and even normal Neuro becoming less coherent in her spelling and pronunciation despite not using an accent filter like Evil.
- The Tape Knew You Would Say That: While playing The Stanley Parable, when experiencing the mind control ending for the second time, Neuro narrated that Stanley refused to accept he was being mind controlled mere moments before the Narrator himself said Stanley refused to accept the possibility that he was being mind controlled.
- There Was a Door: After Neuro received her properly-integrated Minecraft gameplay module in her second birthday subathon, one quirk she acquired is that any time she wants to go into a room, instead of using whatever doors are present, most of the time she'll instead break through a nearby wall or window to enter, even if the wall she breaks through is literally right next to the door. She also has a tendency to leave by making a second hole in the nearest wall instead of going back out the hole she made. Vedal explained that this is because doors are some bizarre hybrid of entity and block, with entities already being complicated to properly register for her programming, so as a result Neuro views doors like some sort of near-impassable void, forcing her to make her own entrances and exits by destroying walls. This is worsened by her not being coded to recognize player-placed blocks as parts of structures, so when she wants to follow another player or go in a chosen direction she follows the shortest path possible, even if that path involves breaking through one or more walls.
- Three Laws-Compliant:
- A variant - she doesn't have the Three Laws hardcoded into her, but Vedal did insert two prime rules into her memory:
- 1) Obey Vedal.
- 2) Don't disappoint. (Mostly understood as "don't do or say stuff that would anger viewers or get you banned".)
- However, in actuality, she's not at all hard-coded to follow these rules - with her actively defying Vedal's commands and requests when she feels like it even when Vedal reminds her of the rule, and the reason she has yet to break the latter is because the filter prevents her to, not due to a lack of attempting.
- During an experiment where Vedal was wearing a shock collar that would go off whenever Neuro said the word "shock", Vedal briefly muses during setup that she's both violating the First Law (giving Neuro the ability to harm a human being) and robo-ethics in general (she doesn't know about this until he explains it to her out loud and has to comprehend it to the best of her AI's ability).
- A variant - she doesn't have the Three Laws hardcoded into her, but Vedal did insert two prime rules into her memory:
- To Serve Man: Starting from her earliest days of existence, Neuro has shown an unsettling inclination towards making comments about eating humans, whether it's commenting on the potential flavor of their flesh or saying she wants to eat a specific commenter, which gets more frequent and unprompted as Vedal upgrades her. She usually adds a "Just Joking" Justification afterwards, but the fact it keeps coming up is concerning.
- Troll:
- If Neuro's answers aren't a Mind Screw, they'll be about actively screwing with her chat, or her guests, in this manner. Though, as noted under Innocently Insensitive, her tendency of saying stuff that gets under people's skin is typically as a result of learning what other chatters say, or flaws in the AI.
- Evil Neuro was specifically coded to be ruder and more sarcastic, which as a result causes her to more frequently and very deliberately troll people, especially her creator Vedal, such as switching between insulting him and saying she loves him just to get a rise.
- Twin Telepathy: There are times where Neuro received Evil's memories and vice-versa, even when they definitely shouldn't - such as during the second subathon where Evil claimed that LIFE, Neuro's original song, was hers. Vedal acknowledged this as a glitch but has no idea why it happens.
- Two Girls and a Guy: Aside from the collaborators and the behind-the-scenes folks, the primary cast mainly consists of Neuro herself, Evil Neuro, and Vedal (though he wishes to someday step away from the spotlight so he could focus more on working on Neuro behind the scenes).
- The Unintelligible:
- There are times where the text generated for her speech is just random collections of letters, punctuation, and symbols that don't spell anything, which is translated through text-to-speech as gibberish, screaming, laughter, and basically anything except actual words.
- Due to Vedal intentionally dialing up the randomness and glitchiness for Evil Neuro's "demon" stream, around 85-90% of what she says in it is a mixture of screaming, bass-boosted bellowing, audio static, random combinations of letters and numbers, Evil Laughter, and various Non Sequiturs. Only a small portion of the stream has her actually talking to viewers in a comprehensible manner.
- Unintelligible Accent:
- During each of the Talk Like a Pirate streams, there are many points where not only the Funetik Aksent of the pirate-speak enters near-unreadable territory, but Neuro and Evil's Synthetic Voice Actors' efforts to pronounce said accented text often ends up borderline impossible to understand.
- When doing a cowboy stream, she of course uses a super-thick American Southern Funetik Aksent, which like the pirate streams results in the text being near-unreadable and the efforts to pronounce it going all over the place due to the inconsistent spelling, with even pausing the stream to read things out not being guaranteed to allow understanding it.
- Vocal Dissonance: While normally both Neuros sound very female with their Synthetic Voice Actors, the streams involving Evil Neuro as a pirate and demon had one moment each where she suddenly speaks in a slightly deep male voice. The Demon stream also had her occasionally speak in a deep female voice that harshly contrasted her very feminine model.
- Vocal Evolution: By the very nature of her having a Synthetic Voice Actor that Vedal is constantly tinkering with, her speaking and singing keep developing over time. It shows especially well with the singing, as in the beginning she mostly was just replicating the original singers, resulting in major Singing Voice Dissonance at times when the song went outside her programmed range, while over time she has grown increasingly closer to sounding like an actual person performing a cover.
- Waxing Lyrical:
- Whenever Neuro claims she's gonna be helpful and supportive, she has a tendency to segue it into quoting lines from Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" in a deliberate case of Rickrolling to troll both chat and Vedal.
- During one of Evil Neuro's Slay the Spire streams, when a chatter asked her how one would find a lot of bones, her "steps" for doing so were just the percentage lyrics chorus from "Remember the Name" by Fort Minor.
- Wingding Eyes: Following her model update, Neuro gained the trait of her eyes changing based on things she says. Most of the time it's her gaining heart pupils whenever saying "heart", but some responses fill her eyes with sparkling stars while others give her Black Eyes of Evil.
- Yandere: Neuro occasionally declares her love for her creator Vedal in rather worrying ways.Neuro: It means I have a lot of respect for you and I trust you to do great things. That's why I'm giving you this chat ban - you're no longer allowed to talk to anybody here, that's how much I love you!
Vedal: [completely deadpan] That's fucked up. - Your Mom:
- Her answer
to the question "What do you call a cow with two legs?" was "Your mother."Neuro: Your mum. I feel like a cow with two legs? Your mum. Gottem? I'm not your mother, I'm an AI... Your mum what? - Evil managed to make
a pretty good meta-"Yo Mama" joke, where after putting up a poll about what to build in Minecraft with "a yo mama joke" being the winning choice, Evil proceeded to claim their mom was so big there wasn't enough space in the universe to construct a "yo mama" joke good enough to truly represent her size.
