     Pre-Release Theories and Episode Ideas

One episode shows what if Loki won in The Avengers.
  • One shot seems to look like Loki’s guard going to a podium.
    • Kind of. Episode 3 ends on Loki successfuly conquering Earth after Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow are all killed before the Avengers could assemble, courtesy of a grief-stricken Hank Pym.

Or about Loki's as King of Asgard with a seat on the UN Panel.
  • As an alternate.
    • Confirmed. Loki does become Asgard's new king and addresses the UN with a demand to find Thor's killer as well as intending to take over the Earth.

The main timeline Dr. Strange will appear
The trailer showed two Dr. Stranges fighting. One of them will be an evil version (perhaps one who became a student of Dormmamu?). The other is the main MCU version of Strange, crossing into that universe to do battle.
  • Jossed while the good Strange crossed over from a different timeline to fight his evil counterpart, it isn’t the one from the main MCU timeline.
    • The good Strange didn't "cross over from a different timeline", his personal timeline was split in two by the Ancient One.

A future episode will detail Captain America returning the Infinity Stones and eventually deciding to stay with Peggy
Since Cap will be going into alternate timelines, it still fits the series concept while delivering a swerve to what we typically expect.
  • Doesn't seem to be likely as I know the What If comics dealt with these kinds of stories from time to time but I'd think it would fit the show.

America Chavez will make a cameo that sets up her future appearances
  • She is a multiversal traveler after all.
  • Jossed. Maybe in Season 2.
    • Jossed for Season 2

Ideas about what happened to Wakanda after young T'Challa was abducted by the Ravagers
  • In the trailer, young T'Challa is wearing a black and yellow outfit. He wore that same outfit in a scene deleted from Black Panther (2018), which was set directly after T'Chaka's return to Wakanda after he killed N'Jobu. With the crown prince gone and Shuri still too young, T'Chaka will have to track down the same nephew he just orphaned and bring him into the royal family.
  • Shuri, as the only known heir remaining, inherits the throne and becomes the Black Panther, maybe adding some extra bells & whistles to the suit, and giving the Wakandan Council ulcers from some of her antics.

Peter Quill dies as a child in the "What if T'Challa Became Star-Lord" episode
The trailer shows Yondu picking up a young T'Challa and turning him into Star-Lord. In this universe, when Peter runs out of the hospital when his mom dies, perhaps he runs into speeding traffic or the like. Yondu decides to pick up another child for Ego and hope he doesn't notice (because to him, all Terrans look alike). With Wakanda being the most technologically advanced place on Earth, they head over and get T'Challa, expecting him to be smarter than most humans and someone Ego would be satisfied with.
  • Jossed: Taserface and Kraglin pick up T'Challa by mistake, and Ego comes to collect Peter himself later in his life. Although the concept of Terrans all looking a like does come up and the Ravagers were drawn to Wakanda’s technology, particularly vibranium.

Theories about Loki taking over the world.
In the trailer, we see Loki leading Asgardian warriors into a UN meeting. We also see glimpses of a human Thor running through the SHIELD facility seen in Thor with Hawkeye ready to shoot. In this universe, Coulson gives the order for Hawkeye to shoot and he kills Thor as a human. This leads to Loki taking over Asgard and invading Earth sooner in the timeline. He will end up killing the other Avengers as they hadn't yet formed a team, Iron Man would be dying, Cap would be frozen, and Banner would be busy trying to get rid of the Hulk alongside Dr. Sterns (remember, much of the Phase 2 movies took place in the span of a single week). Loki then takes over the world and Fury has to call in Captain Marvel (also seen in the trailer) to take him out.
  • Partially jossed and partially confirmed. Clint does kill Thor, Loki invades Earth sooner, the Avengers die in a week, and Fury does call in Captain Marvel but it was all a part of Hank Pym’s plot to get vengeance for Hope’s death. Loki actually helps Fury beat Hank before taking over the world.

One episode where everyone is Gender Flipped.

They'll be episodes that have non-MCU live-action Marvel movies taking place in the MCU.
I know this is unlikely, but still. Example, we'll see Cap fighting alongside the Hugh Jackman Wolverine during WWII.

One of the What If...? episodes will be popular enough to spin off into its own series
  • It almost worked for the T'Challa / Star Lord episode, too bad Chadwick Boseman didn't live long enough to be a part of it. So it was scrapped.
  • Confirmed. Marvel Zombies will be a mature animated sequel spin-off of the Zombies Episode.

If Chadwick Boseman was still alive, we'd have more Black Panther-focused episodes.
  • One would have been, "What if T'Chaka died when T'Challa was a boy?". This would have been Truer to the Text.
  • What if T'Chaka had taken young N'Jadaka with him?

We'll have another season, which includes the X-Men and Fantastic Four.
  • The second season is unlikely to introduce them since their movies will come out well after it has ended. The third season could have X-Men/Fantastic Four-centric episodes.

The Black Order from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame will have bigger roles in certain episodes.
  • Since Marvel likely didn't expect for Thanos's other children to become so popular amongst the fandom, this could be a great way to explore their characters and give them more depth than we got in those films. We could see why Gamora and Nebula hated their siblings so much, and we can see what kind of lives they have under Thanos's tutelage.

The "Thanus" theory will be brought up in one episode.
  • Hey, it would be a fun Meme Acknowledgement!
    • Confirmed, although indirectly, with The Wasp blowing up a zombie Sharon from inside of her, which causes her to become infected.

Since Dr. Strange said that their victory in Endgame would be a Million to One Chance, this series will show exactly why Strange did what he did, and why each team player had to be who they were.
  • The outcomes Strange had weren't from every timeline in the multiverse, but every one that mirrored the situation he was in at the time. If anything, the fact that the universes shown in the series are going to be very divergent makes it likely that these are ones whose "ends" went unseen by Strange.
    • Jossed. Episode 1 does not feature Thanos at all, and episode 2 features Thanos making a Heel–Face Turn long before Endgame.. Not to mention episode 5 ending before (zombie) Thanos could win, or episode 8 having him killed by Ultron.

The Time Variance Authority will appear to actively keep the characters from one episode's universe from entering another's

Yondu snatched up T'Challa in Peter Quill's stead as part of a plan to fuck over Ego
This Yondu presumably shares the movies' backstory, which means he was also likely disgusted with what Ego made him complicit in.

There would be a gag episode full of skits akin to the 34th issue of both What If runs in the comics.
  • If we're lucky to have the series run long enough, it will be the 34th episode.

The Spider-Man property will not be referenced in any way for the entire series.
  • Upon the purchase of Marvel Entertainment by Disney in 2009, the rights to Spider-Man in animation reverted back to Marvel, leading to the end of The Spectacular Spider-Man. Since then, it has been made clear that Sony has rights to the property in all film, and all live action media, enabling Spider-Man to appear in multiple animated shows from Marvel. He could technically appear in What If...? but since it is the same character as the live action cinematic Spider-Man, Marvel Studios will err on the side of caution and not use him or his supporting cast at all.
    • Important to note is that Spider-Man is not even referenced whatsoever in any MCU media where he does not appear (neither in Marvel Studios nor Marvel Television productions). The closest that it comes is the term "blip" from Spider-Man: Far From Home being used in later media, but this can be chalked up to the term being written into Far From Home to match The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision rather than the other way around.
    • They have the animation rights so I doubt they will not reference his movies especially since they said they want to tackle all the movies in the saga.
    • Jossed. Not only does Spider-Man appears in the trailers and some posters to the show, but he's also the main character in What If…? S1E5 "What If… Zombies?!". He even goes as far as to make the first verbal mention of Uncle Ben in the MCU, and indirect mentions of his parents.

The take on Marvel Zombies will be Lighter and Softer than the source material.
  • Given the MCU has fewer superheroes and supervillains than in the main Marvel Zombies canon and beings like Galactus haven't been introduced yet, it seems unlikely that this version of a superhuman Zombie Apocalypse leads to the death of nearly all life in the universe at a minimum and might even end with a Bittersweet Ending where the outbreak is quelled despite casualties.
    • In addition, the Marvel Zombies will be given a dose of Adaptational Dumbass by being stereotypical zombies, rather than retaining their intelligence and self-awareness like in the comics.
    • The episode could also end with the world in chaos after stopping the zombie apocalypse but the final scene has Thanos arriving, ready to take the Infinity Stones now that they are defenseless.
    • This episode could also tie in to Captain America: Civil War. That movie began with the Avengers stopping Crossbones and his men from stealing biological weapons. In this alternate timeline, the Avengers failed and the biological weapons released a zombie virus. In this episode, we see Bucky going after Cap. Perhaps Zemo takes control of him as he did in the movie but this time, it’s as a weapon against zombies.
    • Kind of confirmed. While the episode has a lot of Black Comedy, it is also the single most violent entry in the MCU yet with our favorite heroes being consumed by the undead and some being offed in very brutal ways. To say nothing of the Cruel Twist Ending where Spider-Man, Black Panther and Ant-Man's head reach Wakanda, only for the audience to learn that it's already full of zombies and Thanos is already there, now infected and wielding FIVE of the Infinity Stones. Since the three heroes already have the Mind Stone, Oh, Crap! doesn't even begin to describe how screwed they all are.
  • The upcoming Marvel Zombies will however, be more faithful to the source material,as the series is intended for "Mature" audiences.

One of the timelines shown to us will be the alternate 2014 shown in Avengers: Endgame.
  • Since the alternate 2012 will be seen iLoki, and the alternate 2013 didn't have any major changes, this show will give us an opportunity to see how the universe at large will react to one of the galaxy's most dreaded conquerors suddenly vanishing out of thin air with his entire army. What will fill the void is anyone's guess.
    • Without Thanos to menace the universe in the alternate 2014, this might be the opportunity to foreshadow a major Big Bad from the Marvel Universe that has not been featured in either the MCU or movies in general. Maybe Galactus?

The Zombies episode will not spin out of an existing movie
At no point was there a movie where zombies were even hinted as being a threat. However, there are plenty of dark supernatural events that are soon to be adapted. The movie will be about if Blade or Moon Knight failed their duties and led to an outbreak, and the movie or series proper will begin with them preventing that event before going into the plot proper.
  • However we do see Bucky in his Infinity War costume fighting Zombie Captain America in one of the trailers. So it might spin out of that film and Civil War respectively.
  • Jossed. It spins out of Ant-Man and the Wasp with Hank Pym finding Janet van Dyne having become a zombie thanks to a Quantum Realm disease, and most of the episode takes place during Infinity War.

The Guardians of the Multiverse will emerge after the first season
Based on a newly-revealed poster for the show, it appears that Uatu the Watcher will gather alternate versions of heroes and villains from numerous realities to form the Guardians of the Multiverse, an Expy of the Exiles from the comics. Plus, the showrunner has talked about exploring these alternate timelines in live-action form so maybe someday we might see the Guardians of the Multiverse form to protect their worlds from destruction. Of course, there's the issue of how they are going to integrate the T'Challa version of Star-Lord into future movies since his actor is dead and Marvel will certainly not recast him.

Who will be the new voice actors for some characters
It was revealed that some MCU characters won't have their actors reprising their roles, so let's speculate on who can replace these actors in the show.

The villains live

The series will lead to a number of other projects in the MCU, such as:
  • An adaptation of Exiles (2018), with a team of multiversal heroes led by Captain Carter. Could either be live-action or animated, but probably the latter.
  • An adaptation of Secret Wars (2015), with the actors reprising their roles from the series in live-action.
  • What if the Venomized heroes had never lost their symbiotes?
  • An adaptation of Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe, except Punisher’s efforts will be all for nothing because new superheroes show up in the end.

There will be an episode where Uatu interferes.
It's Uatu, what do you expect?
  • The episode itself will even be titled "What If... The Watcher Interfered?"
  • Sort of. He's even tempted to interfere in episode 4 (if only to punish Strange Supreme), but knows it's too dangerous. But then it's clear it will happen in the season finale to stop Infinity Ultron.
  • Confirmed. Season 1 ends with "What If...The Watcher Broke his Oath", where The Watcher recruits Multiverse Heroes to stop Ultron.

The series will end with an adaptation of Timequake
Given the series taking place immediately after Loki (2021) (introducing both the Time Variance Authority and the MCU's equivalent to Immortus) and considering Timequake was the only overarching story event from the What If comics, the series may end on a variation of it and its finale What if the Watcher Saved the Universe? where Uatu, freed from the restrictions of his non-interference oath, worked with the TVA by bringing in heroes from the timelines observed in the series to team up and stop a multiverse ending event.
  • The ending to What if Thor Were an Only Child seems to back this up with the Infinity Ultron drones breaking into the splinter reality, surprising even Uatu. And the following one even more, as he starts recruiting people from the Multiverse, starting with Strange Supreme.
  • The preview video for What if Ultron Won? shows one of the TVA's monitors tracking the Ultron timeline. As mentioned above, the TVA played a major role in the original comic event.

  • What if Agatha really brought Pietro back from the dead?
  • What if Maria Rambeau instead of Carol Danvers flew for Dr. Wendy Lawson?
    • Two Alternate Realities have revealed that Maria would of have gained super powers. One reality in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, had Maria assuming the role of Captain Marvel, instead of Carol. In another reality seen in The Marvels, Maria was part of the X-Men, as Binary. However in this reality, she never gave birth to Monica.

  • What if Scott Lang never escaped the Quantum Realm? (simply, the rat that accidentally freed him never walks across the console, meaning the Snap is never undone but past!Thanos also never attacks the present-day and the survivors of the Snap are left to deal with the inevitable arrival of Kang in the main MCU timeline with their numbers and abilities severely depleted)
  • What if Rocket, Lylla, Teefs and Floor all successfully escaped from the High Evolutionary?

  • What if Steve Rogers was the Winter Soldier and Bucky Barnes was Captain America?
    • Partially Confirmed. In "What If... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?", Steve is the symbolic Winter Soldier, as he is brainwashed as 'The Hydra Stomper'. However, Bucky is Secretary of State , while Peggy is Carter Captain.

  • What if Alexei Shostakov was Captain America?
  • What if Thor was sent to Earth in the 1940s?

There will be episodes that crossover into other Disney owned properties.

Episodes showing us the What Could Have Been scenarios for the other Spider-Men being in the MCU
Specifically, how Tobey Maguire was almost brought into continuity in The Incredible Hulk and Andrew Garfield in The Avengers. Admittedly it's a lot more meta than what the show actually does, but it's still possible.

Season 1 Post-Release Theories and Season 2 Ideas
The Captain Carter timeline Bucky would eventually have a granddaughter who would aspire to become a hero after hearing about Peggy's adventures
And that granddaughter was named Rikki.

The tentacled Eldritch Abomination that HYDRA summoned was Shuma-Gorath
The nameless monster came from another dimension, it would've been able to easily destroy the world had Peggy not pushed it back into the portal, and it seems to be unkillable. Plus, we never know its full size, so it could possibly be the size of a planet, just like Shuma-Gorath.
  • The monster seemingly gets summoned again in Episode 4, but this time it's clearly identified as a demonic entity, further raising the possibility that it is Shuma-Gorath.
  • In Episode 9, Strange Supreme transforms partially into it, and its tentacles are suspiciously green.

The series' version of Steve becomes the Winter Soldier
Think about it, the circumstances are nearly identical. If Hydra still grew inside SHIELD it's possible. The only difference would be he's not missing an arm unless he lost it in the intervening years. Would explain the look on Fury's face when Peggy asks him where Steve is. He either thinks he's dead or knows the truth and doesn't want to tell her.
  • So basically Hydra Supreme.
  • Alternately, Peggy's brother Michael ends up becoming the Winter Soldier.
  • Main theory appears confirmed by the Season 2 episode's title, "What If... Captain Carter Fought The HYDRA Stomper?"
  • Confirmed. The Hydra Stomped is this universe's version of the Winter Soldier.

Peggy will take Canon Steve's route after the Alt-Endgame.
And why shouldn't she? Thanos is still going to be coming for the Stones, so something canon-flavored will happen. Why wouldn't Peggy take the same trip MCU Steve did, catching up with Steve after the war? Like the other Rogers, Peggy will have earned her Happily ever after.

The Doctor Strange episode will end with a live-action scene in the main MCU timeline
  • Or a perfect CGI reenactment of it.
  • Jossed

The Embers of Genesis will be used to combat Ego's fragments
  • Nebula claims they can repair a destroyed world in minutes. When Ego tries to destroy everything, the Ravagers will dose him with The Embers, purging his influence and repairing every world he has spread to.

Thanos struggled in his fight against Cull Obsidian and Proxima Midnight in Episode 2 because he was holding back and didn't want to hurt his (former) children.

Peter will go along with Ego's plan in the Episode 2 timeline, leading to its success.
He no longer has his found family with the other Guardians, no one to protect him from his father's corrupting influence.
  • It's very possible that T'Challa will be able to convince Ego to perform a Heel Face Turn, stopping the Expansion from happening. If he can convince Thanos, he can probably convince Ego too.
    • That's unlikely, Thanos ultimately saw himself as a hero, and T'Challa was able to convince him that his plan was flawed. Ego's plan is far more egotistical (hence the name) and is unlikely to be changed by T'Challa's words.
  • It’s also possible that T’Challa will find a way to get through to Peter and stop Ego.
  • The season finale briefly touches on this; the Ravagers and allies have come to stop Ego, with a very confused Quill being rescued by T'Challa. We also see that Ego started using him right then and there in the Dairy Queen before T'Challa swooped in.

Carina will either join the Ravagers or become a new ally to them.
She was inspired by T'Challa's speech against slavery, and he gave her the means for her and the other captives to give The Collector some much deserved Karma. However, at the beginning of the episode, T'Challa is going to use the Power Stone to recharge the Krylorian star — Carina is a Krylorian. After seeing T'Challa help her people, she's either going to join his crew or lead a group of Krylorian allies.

Some future franchises in the MCU will primarily take place in the branched timelines
For example, one superhero will originate in the Star-Lord T'Challa timeline, rather than the Sacred Timeline.

The Party Thor episode will show what if Thor had willingly left Asgard in Thor.
After getting berated by Odin for attacking Jotunheim and disrupting Asgard's peace with the Frost Giants, Thor decides to leave Asgard willingly instead of being cast out and goes to Midgard, where he thinks humans will be more appreciative of him. Thus, he never learns humility and Loki ends up taking over Asgard then leads an army of Asgardians to invade Earth and kill Thor, since Thor would still have Mjolnir and Loki knows that he would easily destroy the Destroyer if he sent it after him alone.
  • Jossed. The episode is about Odin returning Loki to his family and Thor becoming a party dog without his presence.

The Collector being the one who found Loki in the Void instead of Thanos
  • With Thanos no longer the genocidal villain and after the Infinity Stones, this means he never finds Loki and sends him to Earth with an army. Supposedly, the events of Thor still happen with Loki falling off the Rainbow Bridge, what would happen to him? Simple, since the Collector has now filled Thanos empty power vacuum, he is the one who gets his hands. This is somehow related to how he got Thor´s hammer and Hela´s Helmet.
    • Jossed. The episode takes place before the events of Thor (2011, when the setting's said to be 20 years after Star-Lord's abduction, so 2008).

Killmonger saved Tony just to use his weapons making skills to help him take over Wakanda.

Most of the series take place in a single universe
  • ie, Everything is Connected. Again.
  • In this main "What If" universe, T'Challa leaves Wakanda behind to be Star-Lord permanently which leads to T'Chaka brings N'Jakada to Wakanda which leads to his heroic turn as the new Black Panther. Meanwhile in Space, Thanos's retirement will pave the way for Warlord Gamora who will be opposing Ultron-Vision in his own quest to collect the Infinity Stone.
    • We are going to have zombie Captain America so I say no and the events of the third episode makes the remaining episodes taking place in its universe very unlikely.
    • Firmly Jossed by episode 3 Fury finds Captain America frozen in Ice, landmarked by the vibranium shield, which Howard specifically said contained all the vibranium available outside Wakanda. Captain Carter took her shield through time with her.
    • Further Jossed by episode 4 as Dr Strange's universe was destroyed by his own actions at the end of the episode
    • And again by episode 5: virtually all of the previously-featured characters reappear here—the point of divergence is Hank Pym trying to rescue Janet Van Dyne from the Quantum Realm, the Avengers try to stop the ensuing zombie apocalypse, Bucky still became the Winter Soldier, and T'Challa is still Black Panther here, so this clearly can't be in the same universe as any previous episode.

The Captain America in the ice at the end of Episode Three is Isaiah Bradley.
Maybe, just maybe, because Captain Carter existed, Isaiah would have been treated better in this timeline and he got the chance to openly be acknowledged as a hero much sooner.
  • He would need a Vibranium shield of his own which we see: Captain Carter went back through the portal to meet Fury and Hawkeye who is now dead. Plus this is supposed to be a universe where it was changed to Janet Van Dyne was a SHIELD agent leading to her death and the events of the episode.
    • Very much jossed. The third episode is nearly identical to the mainline MCU up until the Avengers (except Captain America) are killed by Hank Pym. Episode 9 explicitly shows that the Cap in the ice was Steve. That said, the Captain Carter timeline could give us an Isaiah Bradley Captain America complete with his own costume and shield from the comics.

The Avengers will still be formed as a resistance against Loki
The end of What If...The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes? suggests that Fury and Captain Marvel will get Steve Rogers out of the ice, but I don't think it'll be just the three of them.
  • James Rhodes is still probably out there somewhere, probably still with the War Machine armor.
    • Possibly he will wear the Iron Man armor, out of guilt for abandoning Stark.
  • Coulson is still around, so he could help out at least.
    • He could be accompanied by Melinda May in her first appearance outside of Agents of SHIELD.
  • The Wakandans definitely won't just stand by and let Loki take all the Vibranium when he thinks of it. T'Chaka would still be alive, so T'Challa wouldn't be Black Panther, but there's another Wakandan who could prove useful; M'Baku.
    • T'Challa was already Black Panther before T'Chaka was killed in the Sacred Timeline. Which of the two is BP when Loki takes over would depend on precisely when T'Chaka retired from the role and passed it on to his son.
  • Helen Cho could provide the resistance with advanced tech.
    • She'll also be assisted in this by Martinex T'Naga (Loki having conquered Earth may lead to more overt interactions with aliens), Phineas Mason, and, in a bit of "meta" irony, Doctor Heinrich Schäfer Note.
  • Abomination was a potential candidate for the Initiative until he was dismissed in favor of Hulk. But with Hulk dead, Abomination was reinstated, thus becoming The Big Guy of this Avengers. Unlike Hulk, Abomination won't hold back and will savagely massacre Loki when given the chance.
    • Alternatively, Leonard Samson will become a Gamma mutate and join as well, believing it will help Betty following Bruce's death. Blonsky could still factor into this though.
  • The Ancient One and Wong could be very useful against Loki.
  • After realizing that because of him Earth was left powerless against Loki, Hank Pym will offer to join as a way to atone for his murders and maybe pull a Heroic Sacrifice to turn the tide.
    • Unless Loki had him executed for causing Thor's death.
    • Even if Hank is dead or imprisoned, the Yellowjacket suit could be adopted by someone else. Bill Foster, maybe?
  • Someone will eventually pick up Mjølnir in Thor's place, provided that Odin didn't take the hammer from New Mexico and brought it back to Asgard.
    • And that someone will end up being none other than Luke Cage. This would be a reference to What If...? #34, a comedic issue full of gag stories, though here it'd be played completely straight.
    • It's pretty likely that it will be Jane Foster since she was near the S.H.I.E.L.D. research site and at least knows about the existence of the Norse gods (including Thor himself). Furthermore, she picked up Mjølnir and became Thor in the original What If...? comics and the mainline continuity, so something similar might play out in the next season.
      • Except Jane is already going to become the Mighty Thor in Thor: Love & Thunder. While she certainly could still wield Mlojnir in What If...? as well, it wouldn't exactly be taking advantage of the freedom this scenario allows. Then again, What If...Luke Cage Possessed the Power of Thor? would probably be enough for an episode in its own right.
      • That episode scenario is very unlikely. At the time that Thor was in New Mexico, Luke Cage would have been a bartender in Manhattan minding his own business and he hasn't even met Jessica Jones nor has he fought Cottonmouth and Diamondback yet. He isn't on SHIELD or anyone's radar yet. By contrast, Jane Foster is already near the site where Mjolnir landed and she would have some interest in wielding it since Thor is dead. Also, it could be a tie-in with the fourth Thor film.
      • If Marvel Studios and the people making this show really cared that much about the Netflix shows and their continuity...well, they would've actually been acknowledged at some point. If they ever use characters who were in said shows, such as Cage, it'll probably be following them being reintroduced, quite possibly even "rebooted", in the films or another Disney+ series, and we don't know when that'll happen for sure.
  • HYDRA and SHIELD would form an Enemy Mine, and The Winter Soldier could be brought out to join the fight.
  • Sharon Carter could join the Avengers Initiative and have a role similar to Black Widow or Hawkeye as the Badass Normal of the team.
  • Sif and the Warriors Three join the resistance since they're disgusted with Loki's reign over Earth. And they also found out Loki has caused the Jotuns to attack Asgard, leading to Thor's banishment in the first place.
  • After learning of Natasha's murder, an enraged Alexei Shostakov will bust out of the prison and end up joining the resistance with a new Red Guardian suit.
  • Peter Parker won't gain his spider powers in this universe, but'll be taken in Clint's former mentor Jack Duquesne and trained to be the new Hawkeye. Note
  • Loki will most definitely commit some heinous deeds while ruling the Earth, unintentionally or otherwise. So who better to join the cause to bring him down than a Ghost Rider wielding the Spirit of Vengeance? It could be any Ghost Rider from the comics, like Johnny Blaze, Robbie Reyes, Alejandra Jones, or Danny Ketch, or even be an original character, possibly a supporting character from the films who only becomes the Ghost Rider in this universe.
  • Jossed, as we briefly see this universe again in the Season 1 finale, and the only heroes we see fighting Loki are an unfrozen Steve, Captain Marvel, and Fury, with no others being alluded to.

HYDRA allies with Loki.
Loki's speech about how humanity truly desires to be subjected is similar to HYDRA's belief that they must be convinced to surrender their freedom.
  • Seems unlikely due to the conflict of faith. HYDRA already has its own God (Hive), and HYDRA has been shown to be prideful to a fault before.
  • Or perhaps they'll serve Loki out of fear.
    • True in either cases, which might cause them to summon Hive earlier to take out Loki and his Asgardian army.

Coulson gets Mistaken for Gay in the Episode 3 timeline
His Embarrassing Password references his love for "Steve" multiple times. Captain America hasn't even been found yet.

Sif will become The Dragon of Loki in the timeline of the third episode.
Whether she is grieving over Thor's death, or simply out of a sense of loyalty to the crown and/or Asgard, Sif will serve as Loki's right-hand man.

Thor isn't as arrogant as he was pre-character development in the second timeline
Assuming he and Asgard are still okay or at least around, perhaps with him separated from his Mjolnir, his arrogant, thick-headed self got a chance to mellow out and become more humble over time, no exile to Earth required.

Strange Supreme will return...
...in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
  • Kind of - there is a Supreme Strange, that is also superpowered by unhealthy magic and doomed his dimension, but it's not the one from What If.

The Ancient One splitting Doctor Strange inadvertently doomed the universe.
The good Doctor Strange was more than just a variant. It was the embodiment of Strange’s conscience. By pulling it out of Strange Supreme, The Ancient One removed his inhibitions. It was only towards the end, after they had merged back, that Strange Supreme was able to see the error of his ways.

The supernatural bug Strange Supreme got his cape from is actually his Variant.
I mean if we can have an Alligator Loki right?

Doctor Strange Supreme will become The Atoner and pull a Heel–Face Turn
After being in isolation and dealing with his own guilt for an untold amount of time, when Strange meets Captain Carter, Star-Lord T'Challa, Party Thor and possibly others to fight Ultron (as shown in a Hyundai commercial) he'll be more than willing to save other universes with them and make sure none of them will have to suffer the way that he ended up causing his own to.
  • More or less confirmed.
  • Averted for Season 2. Despite seeming to change for good, Supreme Strange attempts to sacrifice many Multiverse beings (dubbed "Universe Killers") to resurrect his universe. Captain Carter and Kahhori stop his plan, however Supreme Strange's death causing his universe to be reborn without him.

Alternatively Strange Supreme will end up as Azathoth The Idiot God
He will dream up a new reality with all his powers wether he knows it or not all eternity.

Star-Lord T'Challa will lose his ability to speak due to a serious injury to his throat
If there's ever a follow up to the second episode, this will have happened "off screen". He'll also wear his mask more often. This will allow them to use this version of T'Challa again even though Chadwick is no longer around to voice him, while still sticking to the decision made to never recast Chadwick Boseman in the role.

In Captain Carter's timeline, there's a new HYDRA Stomper (possibly now Iron Stomper) in contemporary times
The new Stomper is Nicole Rogers, Steve's granddaughter (whose name is based on Nickie Rogers, one of Steve's sons with Sharon Carter in What If? #38). While Peggy will be somewhat uncomfortable around her at first, partly due to being hurt that Steve apparently "moved on" after her "death", the two will become friends and teammates as members of their universe's Avengers.
  • Jossed.

Strange Supreme is Dormammu
As the sole inhabitant of his destroyed universe, he reinvents it as the Dark Dimension and becomes the interdimensional entity.

The tentacled demonic entity Strange Supreme summons is Shuma-Gorath
Instead of just the Kraken from episode 1, this monster is clearly identified as a demonic entity that Strange, the Sorceror Supreme, is unable to handle.

Uatu will eventually interfere.
Each episode has had Uatu show up more often in background, and even has him speaking directly with Strange Supreme in episode 4. So just like his comic counterpart, he will eventually break his vow to only watch and will eventually save someone, maybe even an entire universe from destruction.
  • It could be like in "Marvel 1602" where the threat is the destruction of literally every reality in the multiverse, so the other Watchers allow him to slightly interfere with events by talking to the heroes.
  • To add to my original point, what if the zombies episode ends with the zombies eating their entire universe and discovering a way to travel to others. So Uatu has to interfere to save the entire multiverse.
  • Confirmed, as Infinity Ultron makes him cross the Godzilla Threshold and start recruiting Guardians of the Multiverse, starting with Strange Supreme.

In addition to what we see, in each timeline (excluding episode four), what also happened for-want-of-a-nail was...
Episode 1
  • Thanks to Steve and Howard, Stomper becomes a generic term for any kind of mech suit, though its in particular used for the larger, armoured ones.
  • Jossed.
  • Peggy becomes a feminist icon in the ensuing 20th century, inspiring others.
  • Confirmed via Word of God
  • Howard and Tony's relations were altered because of the former's interactions with Carter.
  • Confirmed via Word of God
Episode 2
  • In the push to make the spaceship, Wakanda made small yet crucial technological advances (even for them) that would change things in the long run.
    • In addition, they were among the first humans in years to make first contact with aliens.
  • Asgard is no more (hence the Collector having Mjolnir and Hela's helmet), although they themselves survive as do Thor and Loki, and are voyaging through space to find a new home, which often involves plundering planets for resources a la actual Vikings. Thor himself is the king, and he's very much Affably Evil, willing to do all means nessicary for Asgard's benefit, and more wise and humble as suggested above. Whatever caused Asgard's destruction also killed Odin and Frigga, and served a similar purpose to Scacred Timeline Thor's banishment of making him such.
  • Assuming Cap's shield was merely fished out and taken, Steve Rogers isn't quite Avenger material, though still a certified Badass and perhaps gets another weapon.
  • Rocket and Groot are still out there bounty hunting, and haven't yet met T'Challa yet.
Episode 3
  • Scott Lang may not have been able to become Ant-Man since Hank Pym isn't around to tell him to break in somewhere and steal stuff.
Episode 5Episode 6
  • Peter Parker idolizes someone else instead of the deceased Tony Stark.
  • Justin Hammer, Ivan Vanko and Aldrich Killian either give up on their plans or start targeting Pepper and Shuri instead.
  • The Avenger Initiative starts with Cap, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow to help defend against Killmonger or Loki. The relations are very different with no Iron Man.
  • Shuri becomes the new Black Panther after Killmonger is exposed and dethroned.
Episode 7
  • With Infinity Ultron invading the Party Thor timeline, S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain Marvel and Asgard will band together to stop him from annihilating their universe.
    • Possible, as Party Thor is fighting drones when Uatu recruits him, and by the time he's back seems like the threat was vanished.
Episode 8
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 took place later in this timeline, hence why we see Thanos with the Soul Stone before seeing Gamora moments before Ultron kills her and the other Guardians, and why Ego is still alive in 2015.
  • As for some of the other Stones, Thanos simply once again had his minions find them for him as soon as they were left unguarded.

Doctor Strange Supreme’s universe is part of the Dark Multiverse
  • Think of it: An entire universe destroyed, and the remaining character left as a result of their pride or fear. Doctor Strange Supreme could be Strange’s fear of letting pride go to his head.

All of the loops in Episode 4 are Strange Supreme trying and failing to prevent a Stable Time Loop.
Strange Supreme, now trapped in a dead universe with no one but himself for company, realizes his arrogance. So in order to try to prevent it from happening, he sends his consciousness back in time to show his past self that he can't save Christine. Note that the one time we actually see the direct cause of her death, the shooter in the diner. We see him from afar and he kind of resembles what Strange USED to look like. Unfortunately for both versions of Strange Supreme, like a wise man once said Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

The series will culminate in a Crisis Crossover
The Zombies, probably thanks to Thanos, will cross into other parallel worlds to continue their feast. Uatu will end up recruiting every character from the entire Multiverse, particularly those from the other episodes which include:
  • Star-Lord (T'Challa)
  • Captain Carter
  • Loki (from his own show),
  • Doctor Strange (from the Sacred Timeline)
    • Probable, but the tentacles from episodes 1 and 4 imply the threat will be Shuma-Gorath.
      • Partially jossed. While there will be a crossover between alternate iterations of MCU characters, episode 7 outright shows that Infinity Ultron is the big threat to the Multiverse.

Thanos completing the gauntlet will cure him
The immense power of the stones will restore him back to normal and as revenge will kill all the Zombies on Earth, before then killing half of all life in the universe.
  • Jossed.

Peter, Scott, and T'Challa will stop the Quantum Virus
The Mind Stone will pacify the zombie hordes already in Wakanda. Thanos will probably resist thanks to the Infinity Gauntlet, but be stopped by Thor after Peter tells him to go for the head. They will then create a cure with advanced Wakandan technology.

Shang-Chi and Katy were among the survivors who were fed to the Zombie Scarlet Witch
Since San Francisco was infected during the Zombie crisis, Shang-Chi and Katy were consumed or turned into the infected.
  • Sort of jossed. The two are confirmed to appear as major characters in the upcoming Marvel Zombies spin-off alongside the likes of Kamala Khan, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Jimmy Woo, Kate Bishop and even Death Dealer.

The Time Stone was in Wakanda
In the zombie universe, Thanos still attacked Wakanda even though, unlike the Sacred Timeline, The Mind Stone was not there. And he somehow got his hands on the Time Stone even though Dr. Strange was not taken captive and brought to Titan in this universe. Conclusion; the Time Stone was send to Wakanda for safekeeping after Dr. Strange was zombified, and Thanos successfully went there to get it.
  • Okay, but then why did Maw and Obsidian arrive near the Sanctum if there were no stones there?
    • Maybe they followed Bruce Banner?

One of the heroes will use the Infinity Gauntlet to revive everyone killed during the Zombie crisis.
If the above theory about Peter, Scott and T'Challa managing to prevail against Zombie Thanos, particularly if Thor and the Guardians show up, then the heroes will have access to the Infinity Gauntlet, making it likely someone will use the stones to bring everyone who died back to life.

Likely candidates include:

  • Thor: Canonically Thor has little left to lose, in the Sacred Timeline he was willing to try, while the cosmic devastation has not occurred the destruction of Asgard and the death of Thor's friends would be motivation to try.
  • Captain Marvel: Assuming Fury called her in, as someone directly empowered by the Space Stone, Carol is one of the few people who may survive using the Gauntlet.
  • Star-Lord: Quill has previously used the gauntlet, he may believe he has a better chance of surviving using the gauntlet, particularly if Carol isn't there, and even if Ego's death meant he doesn't have a chance of surviving, after losing Gamora he may not care. It'd also provide a Throw the Dog a Bone; after his Infinity War screwup and Episode 2's implication the universe may have been better off with T'Challa as Star-Lord instead of Quill, a version of Quill dies to save the universe.
  • Thanos: His quest was about bringing balance to the universe: A Zombified planet isn't balance, but a cancer. Also: He's the only one whose hand fits in the Infinity Gauntlet!

Unlikely Candidates would be:

  • Spider-Man: While Peter is likely to be willing to give his life to save the universe, as long as there's an adult who could make the sacrifice, they're unlikely to allow him to do so.
  • Ant-Man (Scott Lang): As a disembodied head in a jar, Scott cannot put the gauntlet on.

The Watcher is a Kang
Considering that the origin of alternate timelines is a side effect of the more malevolent Kangs being released from He Who Remains, it's likely that What If? will tie in to the budding Kang Myth Arc. Maybe it will be revealed that The Watcher is a comparatively benevolent variant of Kang who chose to observe alternate timelines instead of conquering them.

A sequel to the zombie episode will reveal that War Machine survived
Rhodey is the only Avenger whose fate is never shown, and in the Marvel Zombies comic he was able to keep from being turned by cutting out any infected flesh and replacing it with cyborg parts. The same could easily be true here.

A future episode will be an homage to the joke "What If...?" scenarios from the comics
Instead of taking itself at all seriously, it will basically be a clip show of one-off gags in the vein of "What If the Silver Surfer, White Tiger, Night Rider, Iceman, and Moon Knight fought Wendigo in a snowstorm?"
  • Alternatively, these will be taken seriously and are just alluded to in what actually happens; using the above example, it would be a genuine fight between every MCU character with a white costume fighting an established white-colored monster from the MCU in a snowstorm.
    • What candidates would there be anyway? Both for the characters fighting the monster, and the monster itself?
  • One of these that would probably work quite well would be "What if Spiderman married the Black Widow?" It could be an alternate take on Far From Home in which Hawkeye died on Vormir instead of her. Then, Natasha takes over the Mysterio case instead of Talos, and ends up turning into a violent Yandere for Peter out of grief for Clint.
  • It would be the 34th episode, like how the first two volumes' 34th issue being a "joke issue". If the series runs long enough, presumably 65 episodes.

In the mid-season trailer, T'Challa Star-Lord, Mad Titan Gamora, Party Thor, Captain Carter, Doctor Strange Supreme and Ultron Victorious Black Widow were seen next to each other, this implies they will form the Guardians of the Multiverse, they could be joined by..
  • Zombie Hunter Spider-Man from Episode 5.
  • Nick Fury from Episode 3.
  • Or alternatively, The lineup will likely stay at 6, as the initial scene in the trailer featured them in the iconic pose from The Avengers, and any number higher would be kind of hard to cram in.
    • If the T-shirt is to go by, Prince Killmonger will likely join the team, thus adding an extra member to the Guardians (7).
      • Confirmed at 7 with Killmonger.

Future members of the Guardians of the Multiverse
Once the team is fully formed, we'll see Variants from other timelines as new members. HYDRA Stomper Steve Rogers, Zombie Hunter Spider-Man, Shuri and a few others are likely candidates to join the Guardians of the Multiverse.

Quill would turn against Ego in the episode 2 timeline anyway.
While the Guardians helped, in the Sacred Timeline it wasn't the influence of the guardians that turned Peter against Ego, it wasn't even a heroic instinct brought out by Peter's time with the Guardians, it was Ego confessing to the murder of Meredith, something that's likely to happen in this altered timeline as well. While Ego may succeed in overpowering and using Peter like he tried in the Sacred Timeline, Peter is still likely to oppose Ego, and him Fighting from the Inside will give T'Challa the time to stop Ego, possibly at the cost of his own life.
  • Partially jossed - Ego starts his melding with Quill right in that Dairy Queen. But T'Challa intervenes.

Quill's life in episode 2 doesn't suck
It's presumed, because he didn't leave Earth to become Star-Lord, and is working at a Dairy Queen, Quill's life is significantly worse than his ST counterpart, however, as a great man once said; "There is nothing wrong with a life of peace and prosperity." It's perfectly reasonable to assume that Peter found love, and a family back home, growing up with his grandfather, and indeed this may play into what drives him to fight against Ego.

The timeline where Ultron gets the Infinity Stones is caused by Hank Pym being brought in to help Bruce and Tony with creating Ultron.
The show's already made Hank responsible for destroying two versions of the MCU, so they could possibly fit in a third while referencing Ultron's comics origin as a creation of Hank Pym.
  • Unlikely - it happened because this time, Ultron managed to upload himself into Vision. And hardly that happened because Hank Pym decided to bury the hatchet with the Starks.

In Season 2, the universes timelines will be more similar to the Sacred Timeline's history up to the divergence of events.
What if Ultron won adjusted that universe's timeline so that Ego was still alive and the Guardians hadn't yet encountered him when Ultron was created, when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 takes place before Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Party Thor Earth’s Norse Mythology
If Loki was never taken in the changes would be that he was an ally of Thor but known as a prince of the Frost Giants.

VisionUltron will be what causes Uatu to finally get off his ass.
Or at least start the chain of events that leads to him doing so. Note that even he didn't see Ultron/Vision coming at the end of Episode 7. I could be wrong but a Watcher not seeing something coming when they're supposed to be omnipotent is usually treated like a big deal. And given he comes out of a portal, it seems to imply he's from a different universe. Which would mean his very existence threatens all of reality. Ultron being Ultron, that would make perfect sense. Maybe he doesn't get off his ass immediately, but maybe in the season finale, he finally decides "Screw it, if I don't do something they're going to destroy all of reality, and I can't let that happen." Leading to Uatu doing what he's known for.
  • To be fair, it's shown in "Marvel 1602" that the other Watchers consider "complete destruction of the entire multiverse" to be an acceptable reason to break their non-interference vow (if only in slight ways)
  • OP here. I do hope someone picks up that phone. Because I FUCKING CALLED IT! Though to be fair, it's not like Infinity Ultron gave him much choice in the matter.

Ultron got the Soul Stone by forcing Vision to sacrifice Wanda on Vormir.
This WMG is based on the idea that the Vision we see at the end of Episode 7 is older. Aka not the one just built in Age Of Ultron. My guess is Ultron laid dormant in Vision for YEARS until he learned about the Infinity Stones. Then, he come back online and took over while Vision and Wanda were on Vormir, probably during an alternate time heist where they survived. Took over Vision's body and tossed Wanda off the cliff while Vision was powerless to do anything about it.
  • OP here, I just thought of an alternative: Alternately, Vision being forced to sacrifice Wanda led to him giving in to Ultron.
  • OP again, jossed, he gets the stone from Thanos. How Thanos got the stone when Gamora is alive is anyone's guess.

Ultron sacrificed Wanda.
He did have affection for her and Thanos was able to sacrifice Gamora and he was ultimately a prideful monster who wanted to prove himself right; of the sacrifice worked for him why not Ultron?
  • Jossed. He took the stones from Thanos after killing him.

Uatu is telling these stories to America Chavez
Uatu cannot break his Alien Non-Interference Clause, but he can bend it. When he realizes the threat Infinity Ultron poses to the multiverse, he'll search for somebody who can interfere - America. Then he'll just so happen broadcast these stories on a frequency she'll pick up, or maybe her dimension-hopping abilities allow her to sense him the same way Strange Supreme can. She'll pick up what he's implying and gather a team of heroes to stop him, and once that's dealt with she'll gain an interest in the dimension where all these timelines seem to be splitting from.

The Zombie Timeline will be used to defeat Infinity Ultron
If Thanos has nearly every Infinity Stone, then Peter, T'Challa, and Scott don't have much of a chance to stop him on their own. But if Ultron's forces can somehow be diverted into invading the Zombie Timeline, then the two sides would be almost evenly matched and, if not destroy each other, at least be unable to leave.
  • So Age of Ultron vs Marvel Zombies?
  • Conversely, the heroes hatch a plan to remove Zombie Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet and use it to snap-away Ultron. This will be complete with a Heroic Sacrifice from someone since using the Gauntlet tends to be deadly.
  • Confirmed...to an extent. In the final episode, Strange Supreme summons a portal to the zombie universe and drops a huge number of zombies onto Ultron, with zombie Wanda briefly fighting the latter. However, this only manages to slow Ultron down briefly.

The Ultron-Vision from episode 7 is not nearly as threatening as we’re led to believe
Each universe runs on its own internal logic, and the universe in this episode is Denser and Wackier, with even villains like Surtur being friends with Thor. That’s why Uatu was confused; it just doesn’t make sense for there to be a proper threat in this universe. Also, Thor and Loki were both introduced as being threatening, only for there to be a reveal that they’re actually nicer than we thought. So if the episode had gone on, there probably would’ve been a similar reveal for Ultron-Vision.
  • JOSSED hard. VERY, VERY hard.

The Crisis Crossover episode will require the heroes from the variant timelines to assemble their own set of Infinity Stones
Four of the stones have already appeared, and are in the possession of heroes who are likely to show up.
  • Captain Carter was summoned back to Earth using the Tesseract and has some understanding of it from Howard Stark's study of it in her timeline.
  • Star-Lord T'Challa is still in possession of the Orb, with the Power Stone inside.
  • Doctor Strange Supreme still has the Eye of Agamotto from his universe.
  • The zombie-hunters (including Spider-Man) are in possession of their timeline's Mind Stone.
    • It's pretty likely at this point Episode 9 will focus on Mad Titan Gamora - and Gamora is one of the only characters in the multiverse who knows where the Soul Stone is, so chances are she will have it when we meet her (or at least by the end of the episode). That only leaves the Reality Stone/Aether - which there are a few possibilities for obtaining.
  • Episode 3's heroes could continue to resist Loki until the Convergence begins, at which point anybody could stumble through a warehouse in London and find the Aether.
  • If the Aether has as much agency as implied, episode 7's Jane Foster could be drawn to it again.
  • The assembled multiversal heroes could try and take Infinity Ultron's Reality Stone to complete their gauntlet and stop his.
  • Jossed, they take Ultron's own Stones.

The crossover will occur in Multiverse of Madness
  • As a result of some blurring of the lines between portions of the multiverse, the heroes involved in Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness will have to deal with Infinity Ultron, as well as (possibly all brought into the same timeline) Zombie Thanos, HYDRA's Champion, Hank Pym Yellowjacket, Ego and Quill (or an escaped Tivan the Collector), Killmonger as the Black Panther, and/or Doctor Strange Supreme released from his solitary universe.
    • Jossed, there is dimensional travel, Captain Carter and a Supreme Strange that doomed his world, but the threat is wholly different.

In a subversion from the comics, O'Bengh is not Cagliostro
  • He told Strange Supreme the truth: he's Cagliostro's disciple. One thing that will be brought from the comics is, in the Sacred Timeline they'll be involved in Doctor Doom's origin story. Doom will eventually kill Cagliostro to absorb all his powers. Sensing Doom's treachery beforehand, Cagliostro will task O'Bengh with stopping Doom. Cue the Fantastic Four.

The 8th episode will be narrated by Infinity Ultron

Alternatively, it will be Uatu trying to figure out how Infinity Ultron got the Stones and see if there's any way to stop him
Utatu will flip back and forth to find potential weaknesses that could bring down Ultron. When done, he will relay the info to someone (in such a way that wouldn't qualify as interfering) that will lead to Ultron's deafeat.
  • Jossed

Infinity Ultron is from the timeline where Tony ends up on Sakaar.
Among the Lego sets for the What if series, one set is a Hulkbuster-esqe Iron Man Suit referred to as a Sakaarian Armour (this troper believes he read it was supposed to be from a 'What If Tony didn't come back through the portal in Avengers). Given that there are two episodes left and one is Implied to be a massive multiverse crossover, one would assume that the episode focused on this What If would be episode 8. However the poster is for Infinity Ultron..

The logical assumption therefore is that wile Tony is living on Sakaar, The Avengers still find the staff and Ultron is still born but without Tony's help, Ultron, not Jarvis, claims the Vibranium body, and then gets the infinity stones.

  • Jossed

The Infinity Ultron arc will make heavy use of The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You
That's the only piece of Cosmic Awareness he doesn't yet have: knowing that there's a completely superhero-less world in which he's a fictional character. We will see him directly threatening the audience, and maybe some of the creators by name. (My money's on Kevin Feige.) He may gloat about how the very existence of the entire Marvel Multiverse, comics and all, is the result of his far-reacing influence, manipulating human minds into weakening the barrier between the superhero-having dimensions and ours. This may not necessarily happen in this series. Maybe in a movie.
  • Jossed.

Most of the heroes will die fighting Ultron.
In keeping with the nature of the show, the Guardians of the Multiverse will fight Ultron and most of them will die in the process. Perhaps this will include a Redemption Equals Death from Supreme Strange or Killmonger.
  • Jossed; they all live.

Starlord T'Challa will redeem Killmonger.
Both of these men will be included in the Guardians of the Multiverse. Killmonger will naturally not like T'Challa at first but during the adventure, T'Challa will inspire Killmonger to be a better version of himself (perhaps after making a Heroic Sacrifice).
  • Jossed

Strange Supreme could have saved his Universe in the end...
But he would have needed to kill Christine to do it. The thought (understandably) probably never even crossed his mind, but the fact he spent the episode fighting against was that the universe itself needed Christine to die that night.

The Living Tribunal will make an appearance, either to deal with Infinity Ultron or to clean up the aftermath
We know that the Tribunal is an entity that exists in the MCU, given Mordo's staff is named for him, and dealing with things that threaten the entire multiverse is pretty much his entire job, so it stands to reason that if he doesn't end up destroying Infinity Ultron by himself, he'll at least make sure that he can't come back.
  • Jossed, the Tribunal makes no appearance in the final episode.

A version of Iron Man will show up in Episode 9... only to be killed again
The writers have killed off Tony Stark in all but 2 of the episodes of the season. Those being the only episodes he doesn't appear in. I could honestly see them doing it as a way of saying "STOP ASKING US TO BRING HIM BACK!"
  • Confirmed for him showing up, jossed for dying.

Killmonger wasn't lying when describing how his universe's N'Jobu died
Similarly to in Episode 3 where the splitting point actually occurred offscreen and the consequences only become apparent years later. In Killmonger's timeline, N'Jobu really did die due to local gang violence, instead of being killed by T'Chaka after "Uncle J" betrayed N'Jobu and both of them leaving the young Erik behind as he watched. This change in backstory could also explain this Killmonger variant's cool-headed and deceptive Magnificent Bastard personality changes compared to the Sacred Timeline Killmonger's vengeful, Hot-Blooded personality with more nakedly violent plans.

Season 2's episodes will show universes where the events of the other Disney+ Marvel series went differently
At least some of them anyway.

Season 2 will have an episode that'll prominently feature a version of Drax
More specifically, it'll be a version voiced by Dave Bautista.

The Myth Arc for Season 2 will deal with Uatu breaking his oath.
With Season One ending with Uatu breaking his oath in order to stop Ultron, there will likely be consequences. Perhaps the Watchers will relieve him of his post as they did in the comics.

Season 2 will have a finale that intentionally made to be nothing like the finale of Season 1

Strange Supreme will grow bored out of his mind containing Killmonger and Zola
He'll try to get out of it by putting the pocket dimension inside a jewel and then finding another universe's Sorcerer Supreme who'd actually be confident enough to think they can handle it. Naturally, this goes terribly wrong.

The "Mad Titan Gamora" episode will be at least a conceptual adaptation of Infinity Wars (2018)
While we've only seen two characters from this universe so far, Gamora here is obviously at least partly composited with Thanos by having his weapons and armor, and there has to be some reason Tony is wearing that particular armor and why the Infinity Crusher and an Infinity Gauntlet were in play. Maybe Thanos had to retire early for some reason and passed his quest on to Gamora, who successfully acquired all the Infinity Stones and used them to halve the universe's population less violently, just so happening to become merged with her own adoptive father as a result.
  • Jossed. There are no similarities to Infinity Wars at all in the finalized episode and Tony's armor here is because it was assembled from scrap materials on Sakaar. Gamora acquired Thanos' weapons and armor after she switched sides to join Tony and they defeated Thanos long before he could ever become a cosmic-level threat in the episode's epilogue.
Thanos at the end of the zombie episode isn't actually zombified.
It's an illusion cast by the Reality Stone.

Now, you might be thinking 'why is Thanos projecting an illusion of being zombified if he isn't?' The answer is simple. See, Thanos came to New York to find the Time Stone, only to be ambushed by zombies. While he was, like the Hulk, not really able to be bitten by the undead, they were still a nuisance and preventing him from finding the Time Stone. To get the zombies to leave him alone, he thus projected an illusion he was already one of them, thus making it possible to acquire the Time Stone without being hassled by zombies.

This additionally explains why he still seems ready to use the stones at the end. Thanos isn't an Elite Zombie, he's actually the same uninfected Mad Titan and is actively working to fulfill his original goal.

The whole "Infinity Stones only work on their own universe" rule only exists AFTER that reality crosses the "red line" established in Loki (2021)
That's why it didn't prevent the Avengers from bringing everyone back in Endgame.

Killmonger will eventually win the Stone-fight against Zola.
He has a lot more experience with the stones and knows full well what they're capable of. He'll eventually think outside the box and pull a tactic with the stones to overcome and kill Zola. He will then use the Space Stone to exit Strange Supreme's pocket dimension and force him to take him back to his own universe in an attempt to reclaim his throne...only for him to realize his disappearance escalated the Wakandan-American War, which would eventually turn into World War III if not quelled. Strange Supreme is able to convince Killmonger not to reset the universe to his liking, and the two instead reluctantly work together to stop the war by informing the world how much worse everything will get if it keeps infighting about race relations and the like. After saving the world, Strange Supreme returns to New York to silently dispose of and replace his counterpart, who because of the war never got the chance to travel to Kamar-Taj and receive his training. Because Killmonger gave him the stones, he has no problem fighting off Dormammu and saving Hong Kong while not making the mistakes his counterparts would've with Christine and gets to be with her, also saving The Ancient One's life while he's at it. Meanwhile, Killmonger learns the error of his ways and in honestly taking the crown, atones for his actions by leading the nation of Wakanda into slowly introducing its technology with the world and race reconciliation with other nations with a rough background in that department.

Some things that could happen in the "What If... Zombies!?", spinoff:
  • The Eternals will appear, immune to the virus due to being extremely advanced robots. Arishem is also not pleased, since the zombie apocalypse has thrown off the Emergence.
    • Confirmed. At least Ikarus is slated to appear in Marvel Zombies
  • As noted in the Fridge section, Zombie Thanos may use the stones to advance the zombies' goal in some way.
  • The zombies will go cosmic like in the comics.
    • Thus affecting future births of more Celestials
    • The confirmed existence of Zombie Captain Marvel gives credence to this idea...
  • The virus will evolve and give the zombies sapience, allowing them to make the quips instead of the Survivors, both putting them more in line with the original comic and addressing the criticism that the Survivors seem to be taking the literal apocalypse with a disturbing amount of brevity.
  • Ta-Lo will be a refuge for surviving civilians, since it's a pocket dimension that can only be accessed through specific circumstances. Getting the survivors there is the challenge.
  • Marc/Steven/Jake are immune as long as they suit up thanks to healing from any wound coming with being Khonshu's warrior.
  • Mephisto will appear.
  • Kamala will have to put down Carol, Clint for Kate, and Natasha for Yelena. Because it isn't a zombie story without angst.
  • We'll explore the ramifications the zombie virus has on the Astral Plane, the Duat, and Valhalla, whether they've now experience a huge backlog of recently departed, or, more horrifying, the dead's souls are still trapped in their bodies.

"Mad Titan Gamora" episode's Tony
  • This variation occurs after The Avengers where instead of making it out of the portal, Tony lands on the other side of it. He is captured by Thanos' forces and convinces Gamora and Nebula to rebel sooner than the main timeline. His wording implies he hasn't learned the lessons of Ultron yet, as he wants to put a barrier around the whole universe.

The chronological order of events from Uatu's perspective...
...goes like this:
  1. "What If Thor Were An Only Child?" - Uatu observes the story of Party Thor, then is surprised at the sight of Infinity Ultron.
  2. "What If Ultron Won?" (Beginning) - Uatu goes to the Age of Ultron universe to see where Infinity Ultron came from, inadvertently making Ultron aware of The Multiverse in the process.
  3. "What If Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead Of His Hands?" - Uatu goes to Strange Supreme's universe, looking for a hero to defeat Ultron. However, he finds that Strange isn't the hero he hoped for.
  4. "What If Ultron Won?" (Ending) - After losing his fight with Ultron, he retreats to Strange Supreme's universe and the two come up with a plan.
  5. "What If Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?", "What If T'Challa Became A Star-Lord?", "What If Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?", and the Gamora episode that was pushed back to Season 2 - Uatu searching for his team of Guardians to defeat Ultron.
  6. "What If...Zombies?" - A failed attempt to find a battleground to fight Ultron. After seeing how this one plays out, he moves on to the dead universe that the Guardians ultimately use.
  7. "What If The Watcher Broke His Oath?" - The Guardians fight and defeat Ultron, ends with Uatu and Strange sealing away Killmonger and Ultron-Zola in the pocket dimension.
  8. What If The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?" - Uatu finding a place to put the Natasha from the Age of Ultron reality.

A future season will have Gorr as the final villain
In the comics, Gorr had a plan involving the multiverse—he would kidnap gods from across time and space and force them to build the Godbomb, which would kill every god in existence not only in his universe, but all universes. The Godbomb storyline could be integrated into What If...?, forcing the Guardians of the Multiverse to stop him. Not only that, but it could also be an Author's Saving Throw for Gorr's appearance Love and Thunder—particularly, the lack of screentime given to the God Butcher and him not actually killing gods onscreen aside from his own. It worked with Ultron, so it could work with Gorr as well.

The Gamora/Tony Stark episode will have a lampshade by the Watcher regarding its delay
The episode focusing on Gamora and Tony Stark in Sakaar was notably pushed back thanks to COVID-related complications slowing down its production to the point that it wouldn't be finished for Season 1—making the two heroes' adventure a Noodle Incident when we first see them. When we see the episode in Season 2, it could begin with a humorous jab at how it took so long to properly explain this story by the Watcher—perhaps mentioning it as an oversight.

How the Collector got Captain America's shield
Though attention isn't called to it like Hela's helmet was, Steve's shield is clearly seen as one of the Collector's possessions when he's about to start fighting T'Challa and Yondu. It probably got there via an early divergence in the timeline where both Steve and Red Skull were sent through the portal created by the Tesseract during the climax of The First Avenger. Red Skull may or may not have still been sent to Vormir, but Steve ended up on Knowhere and was overwhelmed by the Collector and/or his enforcers. Whether he's one of the Collector's prisoners or was killed is obviously up in the air.

The multiversal threat for this season will be from the 1602 episode
In the original comic, the time of superheroes in 1602 was in fact not supposed to happen, having been born of a time paradox caused by Kilgrave sending Cap back in time to prevent the latter from foiling his global conquest, which, left unchecked, threatened the whole of existence. While it's doubtful MCU Kilgrave will be responsible, since, even barring the Netflix characters being more casually integrated nowadays, he doesn't think big enough for world domination, something different can cause the Reality-Breaking Paradox, like a Kang Variant being careless.
  • Seemingly confirmed, as "Captain Carter fought the Hydra Stomper" ends on the titular Captain Carter getting pulled out of her universe by the 1602 Scarlet Witch.

Yelena of the King Loki timeline will team up with Natasha of the Infinity Ultron timeline after the latter has settled into the former's.
The Red Room is likely still an issue within that timeline. And since Hank killed the local Natasha, Yelena will need to work with the new Natasha in the 'verse to take down General Dreykov for good. And if Natasha was able to use her foresight from the Infinity Ultron timeline's version of The Winter Soldier to nip the HYDRA problem in the bud early, they may have S.H.I.E.L.D. resources to back them up in this version of events.

The Season 2 episode that has Odin fighting the Mandarin will be caused by Shang-Chi choosing to return home after killing the Iron Gang leader.
After returning to his father's side, Wenwu likely will instill the discipline, loyalty and ruthlessness that Sacred Timeline Shang-Chi lacks, and will single-handedly help the Ten Rings conquer the rest of the world. When Thor is banished to Earth in 2010, he's either killed or imprisoned by the Ten Rings in an attempt to harness his power, resulting in the aforementioned battle.

The confirmed episode set in 1602.
  • Everybody will speak in Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe. Because that would be hilarious and interesting to see.
  • For characters whose returning voice actors are British, the actors will just use their natural British accents since the story is set during Queen Elizabeth I's reign of England.
  • Kilgrave will appear as a Mythology Gag as to the original comic's events starting when an alternate version of him conquered his Earth and sent Captain America into the past, creating a time paradox.
    • Could that happen? I thought I heard somewhere they couldn't introduce anyone besides Uatu. Although there was O'Bengh/Cagliostro, but he might have a loophole around him?.
  • Thor will be shunned because of the obvious oxymoron of a pagan deity defending a Protestant kingdom. He also won't be an old man with a walking stick who can turn into a god because of how much MCU Thor has deviated from his comic counterpart's roots.

The real reason Strange Supreme failed
Was because he refused to absorb the power of that insect-like creature. Small though it seems compared to the many vastly more powerful entities he takes power from, this means Strange did NOT reach his full potential, which he needed to if he was going to defy an absolute point without destroying the universe.

The quantum virus was the work of (a) Kang
Kang's goal is to be a Multiversal Conqueror right? Easy to rule over a universe if no one is around to oppose you. Why would he let the Pyms find Janet instead of just sending the virus some other way? To give people hope dear troper... So he could rip it away from them.

The Soul Stone is effecting Zombie Thanos, allowing him to continue his mission despite his current state
Similarly to how the Mind Stone is able cure Zombies due to effecting their minds, the soul stone is able to manipulate the souls of the undead to make them act like their pre-zombification self, but is unable to undo the physical virus.

Season 2 will culminate into another crossover.
Much like the Ultron story arc in Season 1, another crossover storyline will occur next season.
  • Confirmed, albeit not as huge as Infinity Ultron. The final episode of the season involves Strange Supreme abducting heroes and villains from across the multiverse to restore his universe, and Captain Carter teams up with Kahhori to stop him.

If Deadpool gets an episode in a future season following his integration into the MCU, Deadpool will be able to sense and communicate with Uatu.
And there will be Snark-to-Snark Combat between those two.

Season 3 Theories and Episode Ideas
In general
The writers will be able to / want to expand into stories that weren't originally part of the MCU, such as the SSU, the X-Men Film Franchise, Spider-verse, and more.

What if Peter Parker died

Alternate take on: Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 / Earth-96823
  • Peter dies to the Goblin's glider, which means someone else needs to step in to defeat Doc Ock.

What if Magneto won

Alternate take on: X-Men: The Animated Series / Earth-92131 or X-Men Film Series / Earth-10005

What if Iron Man met Iron Man

Crossover of: Iron Man: Armored Adventures, MCU, Iron Man: The Animated Series and maybe some What if Variants

  • Snarking contest is a must

What if... it's me, Deadpool!

Crossover of: Deadpool (2016) / Earth-10005, Deadpool from Ultimate Spider-Man (2012) and Deadpool from Future Avengers
  • The Watcher tunes into Deadpool from the X-Men Films, which allows Deadpool to see the Watcher. Then Deadpool goes on his own Multiverse adventure with The Watcher chasing him because he isn't sure what trouble Deadpool could cause in other universes.

What If...Christine Palmer was the Sorcerer Supreme?

Alternate take on: Doctor Strange (2016) and Strange's subsequent MCU appearances.
  • Following from the end of Season 2, Strange Supreme's universe is reborn without Strange himself in it. That means the role he would normally fill is open. In the new history of this Earth, Christine will take his place.

What If...Gwen Stacy Survived?

Alternate take on: The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Gwen survives her death at the end of Amazing Spider-Man 2, possibly at the cost of Peter dying instead and leading to her becoming Spider-Gwen.

What If...Peter Parker met Miles Morales?

Alternate take on: Spider-Man: Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: No Way Home
  • Instead of just encountering Peter 2 and 3, Peter 1 meets Miles Morales, who is sent to the MCU instead of Earth-42. This causes Miguel O'Hara to become aware of the events of No Way Home and sets out to arrest Peter for his wish causing the villains to appear in his world. It also turns out that Miguel is aware of the Watcher, which would lead to an interesting dynamic between the two where Uatu compares Miguel to Doctor Strange Supreme in how desperate they were to atone for the universes they destroyed that they put innocent lives in danger, yet Miguel is too stubborn to learn his lesson.

What If... Batch 89 Survived?

Alternate take on: Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Rocket manages to alert Lylla about the High Evolutionary's arrival, meaning she lives and Rocket doesn't waste time mauling the High Evolutionary in a fit of rage, allowing Teefs and Floor to escape. We then follow the events of the Guardians' formation, with three extra members in the mix.

What If... Gravik Won?

Alternate take on: Secret Invasion
  • While doubtful, considering Secret Invasion was easily the biggest critical failure for Disney+ MCU, this would follow what would happen had Fury's Gambit Roulette failed and Gravik won, leading to the Skrulls inhabiting a radioactive dead world. The episode would cover what happens after.

What If... Doc Ock Fought the Hobgoblin?

Alternate take on: Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3
  • Freshly returned from the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dr. Octavius manages to use the Arc Reactor he took home with him to tame his unstable energy machine without sacrificing himself and subsequently moves forward with a whole new lease on life, albeit while cooperating with law enforcement to make amends for the mountain of legal trouble he put himself in. One thing that didn't change in this timeline, however, is Harry Osborne's misplaced vendetta against Peter Parker, and he's still out for blood...

What If... the Spider-Gang Was Summoned?

Alternate take on: Spider-Man: No Way Home
  • Strange's botched memory spell summons the Raimiverse and Webbverse villains, but not their Spider-Men, instead summoning the Spider-Gang as of the end of Across the Spider-Verse. This creates new issues, since the Spider-Gang don't know these specific versions of familiar villains and how they can be saved. Though Across the Spider-Verse takes place after No Way Home (since Miguel mentioned its events), this could be explained with Timey-Wimey Ball.

What If... Gorr Killed the Gods?

Alternate take on: Thor: Love and Thunder
  • Gorr isn't moved by Thor choosing love and wishes Eternity to kill all gods. This has massive repercussions. The dead start rising (possibly lending credence to Kahhori's statement that zombies are universal) because afterlife gods like Taweret are no longer around, Shuri loses her powers because Bast is dead, the Talokanil drown because Chaac is dead, and, most concerning, the cycle of creation and destruction in the universe is disrupted because the Celestials are dead.

What If... the Other Half of the Universe Was Erased?

Alternate take on: Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame
  • The "survivors" of Thanos' Snap (Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, War Machine, Ant-Man, Nebula, Rocket, Hulk, etc.) switch places with heroes who became the victims of said Snap during the climax of Infinity War (Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Star Lord, Drax, Mantis, Black Panther, the whole Pym family, etc.). That way, an alternate take on Endgame events could be observed.

What If... Thanos Shaped the Grateful Universe?

Alternate take on: The aftermath of Avengers: Endgame
  • The climactic battle at Avengers HQ goes horribly wrong. Stark fails to get all six Infinity Stones back onto the Nano Gauntlet, but Thanos retrieves them and successfully wipes out the entire population of the Universe in order to make it "grateful". The Watcher observes the fates of heroes and villains that were reformed after the universe-wide culling.

What If... The Defenders were Earth's Mightiest Heroes?

Alternate take on: The Avengers (2012), Daredevil (2015), Jessica Jones (2015), Luke Cage (2016), Iron Fist (2017), The Punisher (2017), Moon Knight (2022)
  • Instead of bringing together Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye to form the Avengers, Nick Fury instead assembles street-level characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher, and Moon Knight to make into heroes of Earth.

What If... Ego Chose Meredith?

Alternate take on: Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers, Eternals
  • Another Adaptational Heroism episode in the same vein as Hela and Thanos, Ego decides he loves Meredith more than the Expansion and stays with her on Earth to raise Peter. As a Celestial, he's able to easily aid the heroes who would form later in defending the Earth, like wiping out the Chitauri with a wave of his hands. He also knows about Tiamat's gestation under the Earth, and tells the Eternals.

What If....Endgame happened 10 years after the Snap and not five?

"'Alternate take on:"' Film/{{Avengers: Endgame|2019{{
  • Something happens to the mouse that would free Scott Lang (he dies after being run over by a car), so Scott is trapped for another 5 years in the Quantum Realm until one day another animal (a bird) or a person accidentally frees him, but while he stops it was 10 hours, for the World it was 10 years, Scott is faced with aging Avengers and a new generation of heroes (including his daughter Cassie who is either Wasp III or Ant-Woman) who he needs to convince to use time travel to stop Thanos and undo the Snap.

What If... Ammit Won?

Alternate take on: Moon Knight
  • Jake Lockley doesn't emerge to stop Harrow and his men, allowing him and Ammit to bring judgement to the world. The Watcher picks up some time later, an Egypt-themed dystopia that seems perfectly harmonious... because everybody who has done anything wrong, even if they haven't done it yet, has been sacrificed to Ammit.

What If... Evil Won?

Alternate take on: The Infinity Saga
  • An expansion of the universe where Peggy found Kahhori that Uatu said was where Red Skull won due to both Steve and Peggy dying. But in this universe, under the oppressive regime of HYDRA, many of the MCU's heroes either have their bloodlines wiped out before they could be born, or were corrupted. In this universe, evil is dominant, with HYDRA's power being challenged by not the forces of good, but rather Killmonger's Wakandan Empire or the Kree Empire. Earth is plunged into a neverending Hell of terrorists and tyrants warring with each other for power.

What If....John Walker stay Captain America?

"'Alternate take on: "'The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
  • John Walker could or could not use the Super Soldier serum or simply control himself and not kill Nico, with that Sam and Bucky would have no valid reasons to take the Shield from him and John would continue as the new Captain America (and he is probably the one who kills Karly) .

What If... Wakanda ruled the world

Alternate take on: Infinity Saga, but focus on Black Panther
  • Somewhen during Europe's colonization period, probably the 1800's, if not earlier, Wakanda notices a lot of other groups on the African continent are being captured, sold into slavery, and eventually colonized for resources. Rather than go isolationist as they did in the sacred timeline, the council decides to preemptively colonize its neighbors, in the name of protection. The episode then cuts to the 21st century, where Emperor T'Chaka, a famed war hero from the Kree-Earth war and head of the Wakandan Empire, is on his way to Xandar to prepare for a war against Thanos's forces.

     Other Theories
The series is set just after the end of the first season of Loki
Since Sylvie killed He Who Remains and caused the multiverse to re-emerge again, all of the branching timelines that you see in What If...? are a result of her fateful decision.

The Incredible Hulk is actually the undeclared Pilot Movie for What If...?.
And its episode title is "What if ... Bruce Banner had looked like Ed Norton instead of like Mark Ruffalo?"

Meta: Captain Carter is a "The Isekai Hero" subtype of Stock Light-Novel Hero.
The Isekai genre has become quite popular in anime, manga, light and heavy novels, web comics and more. While none of these media "own" the genre, it's funny to speculate that someone on the writing staff is a fan of isekai stories, and was thinking of them when coming up with the idea of having Captain Carter pulled into another world via portal, as many protagonists in the genre have.

When Strange Supreme's prisoners got sent back to their own universes, that included Zola-in-Ultron's-body and Killmonger.
Of course, Zola landed back in a dead universe without the Infinity Stones to use to break back out. And Killmonger would land amidst an angry union of Wakandans and Americans who had by then caught him in his lies.

Kahhori and her associated characters will become part of the primary Marvel Comics continuity outside of the What If...? series

The 1602 universe was also…
The Christmas one. After all, 1602’s Happy is also the Freak and due to the mashup being 2018 (most likely after whenever Happy became the Freak) and 1602…

"Bigfoot" is the code name for Man-Thing in the Captain Carter universe.
Will we see an animated Man-Thing in Season Three? Maybe alongside an animated Werewolf by Night?
