The "Last Temptation" actually occurred.

The "Last Temptation" wasn't a mere fantasy; it actually occurred in the movie, with the "guardian angel" removing the crucifixion nails from Jesus and letting him down. Jesus actually goes through marrying Mary, getting a family, meeting Paul preaching (falsely) the resurrection of Jesus. Then when Peter et al. appear, Peter reveals the "guardian angel" who has been with him all this time to be Satan. Jesus begs, curses, and screams, and God gives him a second chance.
