There will be a crossover with The Middle
Axl will screw up badly and trick Brick into reading a ton of physics and engineering books, then get him to build a time machine. Brick will screw up due to lazy designing and they will get sent to the '80s.
  • Partially confirmed. An episode of The Middle has Axl and Sue going to a party and one of the faces in the crowd is Barry.

The show takes place in an alternate universe
Their universe is almost identical to ours and takes place in the years 1983-85, but some historical events happened a few years earlier or later than they did in our timeline. To offset any flapping of the proverbial butterfly wings these differences might cause, a bunch of seemingly insignificant minor events (such as Adam having a sister and a brother instead of two brothers) unique to their timeline occur that somehow in the grand scheme of things prevent their universe from being too much unlike ours...An In Spite of a Nail Universe, in other words. Thus, Narrator Adam really is remembering things correctly, for his universe.
  • Alternately, time in The Goldbergs' universe has collapsed into a single point so that the entire decade of the 1980s is happening at the same time. People just go on living their lives in a sort of extended "Groundhog Day" Loop where every day is just some random day in "Nineteen Eighty-Something"
    • Make it 1989, and a recap of the entire decade.

The final episode of the series will take place on 31st December 1989
Despite the fact that each event we see take place in The Goldbergs' timeline correlates with the same time of year in our own timeline, some excuse will be made to shift it so that we leave The Goldbergs at the same time that they leave the 198-somethings.
  • This idea has already been mentioned by creator Adam F. Goldberg in an interview published in May 2014 [1]
Do you have an ending scene in mind for the show?
For sure. The last scene will be New Year’s Eve, bringing us into 1990-something.
