Croaker himself is a low magnitude sorcerer who never had any formal training
This troper is re-reading the first books and several details might point to that:
- Croaker has visions, albeit brief ones, but he sees himself at the side of Darling as the fully realized White Rose as well as the Lady at her window, which starts him writing about her. When he later meet her in person, he remarks it's pretty much how he envisioned it.
- during Shadows Linger and The White Rose, he seems to be able to contact her, willingly or not.
- He feels the presence of Darling's null and several time remarks he feels the magic of an object or amulet by touching it.
- To stretch it, his gift with tongues and ability to easily "read" people might be interpreted as a latent gift for telepathy.
