Beverly is a (maybe distant) relative of The Addams Family who hated herself growing up and tried to be normal.

The entire movie is her coming into the very nature she tried to deny for years. Only instead of finding the most normal things horrifying, she strikes out at the pettiest "offenses" to her and/or her family.
