The Protectors Of The Unborn will end up working as obstetricians. Usually, Protector births cause severe brain-damage to the child, leaving it as a virtually mindless killing machine. The only way to avoid this is through Caesarian section, which has to be carried out on a conscious, un-anaesthetised patient. As Protectors spend their entire lives fighting everything around them, they aren't too bothered by this, but doctors of virtually any other species are (apart from Prilicla, who, being an empath, can sense what the pregnant mother is actually feeling, instead of worrying about what how it would feel in her situation).

We first encountered the Protectors when another species, the Blind Ones, decided to import Protectors to their home planet. Probably there are now increasing numbers of wild, non-sapient Protectors breeding there, unchecked by any natural enemies.

So far, we have seen the birth of one sapient Protector in Sector General, without suffering very much brain damage (the doctors still need to perfect the obstetric technique). But if someone could set up a programme of breeding, socialising and educating more sapient Protectors, presumably they could be trained in Caesarian surgery, and operate on their wild, non-sapient cousins on the Blind Ones' planet, delivering sapient young until there are a great enough number of sapient Protectors there to build a civilisation. (Doing the same on their own home planet, a ferocious place where you need to be an Ax-Crazy monster to survive, might take a bit longer.)
