Amical shows disgust at death magic, his gun is shown to have some very serious enchantments, and an official image suggests that he has far more empathy than one would expect from a smiling murderer. (That, and I really want to like him.)

The traditions are generally depicted as recruiting mages during or after their awakening, and tend avoid slavery for the obvious reason that enslaving a mage tends to come back to bite you much harder than any benefit you could possibly get from it. Plus, y'know, all the blatant, murderous evil.

He's telling them they're on the standard paths because he wants to use them as infiltrators into the Traditional groups.
