  • The real person behind the character of Captain Errol was Fighting Jack Churchill. They're both highly decorated battle-mad war heroes interested in surfing, both involved in operations in Yugoslavia and Burma during the war and active in North Africa and Palestine/Israel after the war, both good looking; according to Wikipedia, Mad Jack was stationed with a highland regiment.
    • Some (non-conclusive) counter-arguments: Churchill was never court-martialled and stripped of his commission, as the author says Errol was. Churchill would also be significantly older than Errol. Finally, if the author intended to paint a semi-anonymous portrait of Churchill, it's unlikely that he would omit his enthusiasms for playing the pipes and fencing.
    • Ian Fleming met the real Errol and used him as the inspiration for James Bond.
