WMG / Gate

Go To

There are other, unopened Gates beside the titular one.

One of them might be in New York.
  • Jossed. The latter books specify that Hardy opens Gates in worlds intermittently, but these are always single and, more importantly, temporary; whenever Hardy's world reaches a state of stagnancy, whether culturally, technologically, or politically, the goddess opens up a Gate to a world that takes her fancy, leaves it open just long enough for whatever interesting inhabitants on the other side to bumble their way through and "shakes things up" in Hardy's world, and then slams it shut.
    • But still, one of them could be anywhere else on earth.
  • The only gate to Earth is in Tokyo. USA, Russia and China all want a piece of the action. Following what the latter books specified as above, the only way the gate opens somewhere else on Earth would be if Hardy chooses Earth again as the other side of the gate the next time she opens another gate. Then again, the location may be random, might be in New York, might be the Himalayas, might be in the Pacific.

Instead of Tokyo…

What do you think would happen if the gate is opened in the US, Russia or China?
  • Here's my take: USA and China would, as expected, leech the other world's resources and move half of its population there (respectively). While Russia would want the gate to be closed if other nations have it, they would love to bolster their economy with the resources like the Americans would if the gate opened in Russia.
    • Not to mention how their military would decimate everything at the other side, unlike how the Japanese only wanted to find whoever responsible for the Ginza incident and later the rescue of the captives from the incident.
      • Why should they? Both Russians and Chinese are far more pragmatic and reasonable than the Western propaganda loves to paint them, and the author is actually seems to think so himself: while all Great Powers are shown unsympathetically, the Russians are probably most reasonable of all, followed by the Chinese — note how both Russian and Chinese Presidents just calmly cancel their operations and pull out their agents after learning that they failed, and how the US President flies in a hissy fit, throwing the racist remarks right and left.
      • Perhaps the previous comment meant the military decimating the Special Region locals because hundreds of civilians would be dead from the Gate initial opening, with the Empire's army behind it. If we look at America and its response to a 9/11 scenario, the public would be out for blood, and so would the military.
    • Any nations would work to contain any threats on the other side just to keep themselves from being invaded, but not every nation has a military large enough to do that. Larger nations like China, Russia, and USA have militaries large enough that they could just conquer the other side of the Gate as who there can stop tanks, helicopters, planes, or just well equipped infantry with assault rifles. Its a real fear that those countries could do things such as China's plan to solve its overpopulation by immigrating much of its population. Who would stop them on the other side? Japan in story is actually being moderate by defending the Gate and engaging in diplomacy.
    • The talk of the US simply taking resources is simply leftist propaganda. What would happen is a Roaring Rampage of Revenge that obliterates the Empire’s government, followed by diplomacy. The US has not suffering an invasion by foreign troops in its history. You could argue The Revolutionary War, but that’s a bit more complicated. But this would be an actual invasion of the US by an alien army. There’s no way that would be allowed to stand. Think post-9/11, but without restraint.

The Gate series would encourage Real Life right-winged politics in Japanese government.

It's really stretching to say an anime would have this impact, but a slim possibility is still a possibility...
  • Nope. This is the same kind of argument as "videogames cause violence". Going by your logic, wouldn't KanColle encourage the JMSDF to sink US, Russian and Chinese ships?
  • Quite possible really. Long have people used literature, cartoon strips, animated cartoons, and films for propaganda purposes. The thing to remember is that this series isnt as right-winged as people like to convey. Understandably the initial violence is to defend the Gate and prevent any more of the Empire's forces from attacking Japan again. After that violence is toned down and things in the series focuses mainly about politics. Renewed conflict is the goal of some people on both sides of the Gate that are trying to manipulate the situation, but its still too early for anyone from the Earth-side to invade Japan. How many other anime and manga for modern audiences have had some foreigners invade Japan or interfere with its politics? Its a common point in stories that foreign powers do something to interfere with the protagonists.
    • Actually, it's the other way round. Not that such works promote the right-wing thinking, but rather their appearance in the mainstream is a sign of greater acceptance of such political stance within the Japanese society. While Abe, with his nationalist and revanchist politics, is a contentious figure, he's also quite a popular one, and he actually starts to rival Koizumi as a top post veteran. Ironically, large part of it stems not from his bellicose rhetorics on the foreign matters, but rather from his significantly more successful domestic policy, where the so-called "Abenomics" seems to start breaking the stagnation of the "Lost Decades".

There will be Accent Adaptation when the series is dubbed in English

Since Sentai Filmworks has licensed the anime for the US, the English dub will have Accent Adaptation for some of the characters like....
  • The US President will have a Texan accent to allude he's an expy of George W. Bush. Or maybe an Arkansas drawl to imitate Bill Clinton? (Both have been used in auto commercials.)
  • The Imperials like Pina and Hamilton will have British accents similar to the TV series Rome to show how cultured and haughty the Empire is.
  • I doubt they will dub this, especially since the US is put in a bad light here. It's already a taboo to even mention this in China.

Goblins don't reside near Alnus

In Manga, after Incident of Ginza you don't see may orcs, trolls, or goblins. The reason is the regions where those two races reside are not near Alnus or south Imperial area. While many Cute Monster Girl workers are Clan Formal's maids or even mercenaries and male Beast Men are mercenaries that guard the trade caravan. Meanwhile, goblins and trolls are more suited to Empire's Army that battle like Roman Legion.
  • Confirmed. The early chapters in the light novel show that the goblins, trolls, etc. shown in the first episode were all conscripts in the Imperial Army from somewhere very far away.

Princess Pina will be the one who take the throne.

She may be bastard daughter but she is still a princess and acknowledged. Her chance is still there although eclipsed by her siblings. But now because she is leader of peace faction, allied to JSDF and Emperor wants to save his own skin her chance has skyrocketed, as Prince Diabo concluded. He is right and we can safely bet on her bid for throne.
  • For now, jossed. Zorzal takes the throne in chapter 49, and while he does some things that make sense, locking down the capital, and putting the military on high alert because Molto was poisoned, he basically, and single-handedly runs the empire into the ground, and it will probably never recover. It is yet to be seen if Tyuule will live long enough to enjoy the fruits of her labors in engineering this since her fate differs between the original web novels and the published novels. In the web novels, she goes on to live with Furata, the chef, and Zorzal is left alive to deal with all the grudges he's accumulated throughout his life, and in the published version (and by extension, the light novels), she stabs Zorzal to death, and he, while bleeding out, breaks her neck.
  • The anime depiction has Pina be crowned princess by Molto after their rescue from the Imperial Capital. However, they acknowledge that she is technically not on the throne yet until they overthrow Zorzal.

Tuka and the High Elves see nothing wrong with climbing naked on a parent's bed

Since High Elves like her are immortal, it stands to reason that they don't have as strong a sex drive as humans who live for a fraction of their lifespan. This means that the usual sexual implications are probably lost to them when they sleep together in one bed.Why she chooses to sleep naked on her father's bed is probably because she's "young" in an elven perspective and has the same impact as a young girl taking a bath with her dad in a Japanese [manga] setting.

Zorzal's fate in the anime will be very, very different than what happens in the web or light novels.

Since the anime's gone into original, yet not totally implausible, territory by having either Zorzal or Tyuule copy the Orachnina from texts brought back through the gate by Piña, it's possible that Zorzal's ultimate fate will be very different. Hopefully, since the giant, two-legged rat wants so badly to be historically famous, perhaps his wish should be granted. He could very well be the first Emperor ever to leave the throne, by means of public execution. With all his crimes laid bare. The kidnapping, enslavement, and death of Japanese citizens prior to the war he started, the near nightly rapes, beating, and biting of all his slaves, the breach of his own treaty regarding the Warrior Bunnies, all of it, and for icing on the cake, Piña, a Daughter Of A Whore, which he dismissed because of her heritage, will be the one sentencing him "you wanted to be famous, and go down in history, brother. Well, you are going to get your wish. Your crimes are so heinous that you get to be the first Emperor ever to lose his throne to execution. I will do my best to ensure your infamy is remembered for all time. Knights of the Rose Order! You know what to do!"
  • Or better yet, the anime is suggesting that Itami will kill him in revenge for sending assassins after Lelei.
    • Jossed. The end of the anime has Zorzal and the remainder of his followers in full retreat.
      • Jossing invalidated. First, the "copying from history books" thing is not original anime territory, but it comes directly from the novels themselves, and the anime's omission of this information is what caused some serious head-scratching when they appeared in that medium. Second. The event where Zorzal and Tyuule's fates are decided (as in the point either where they both live or die) takes place many volumes AFTER the events that were adapted at the end of the anime. Therefore the WMG has not yet been jossed, is still on the table, and will stay that way until presumably another season is greenlit that will adapt the volume said event happens.

The Pied Piper really is Hardy (or one of the other gods) in mortal disguise.

Let's just look at the clues we've been given.
  • Gods in the Special Region have Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence, and shed their physical bodies. Further, Rory specifically tells Itami that once she ascends, she can choose whatever form she likes.
  • What Grey told Itami about Pied Piper includes the fact that "Pied Piper" always takes on different forms. Sometimes an orc, sometimes an elf, sometimes a man, sometimes a woman, but it's always different for every target, and worse, Pied Piper never actually carries out the task directly but always "persuades" someone else to do it. Aside from opening the gate, the gods don't seem to interfere with the Special Region directly, always counting on their Apostles, and on rare occasions, their followers, to work in their stead.
  • Jossed. The Pied Piper herself (yes, HERSELF) makes an appearance in the second chapter of volume 4 of the light novel, where she attempts to infiltrate a banquet thrown by House Formal, and ends up having her cover blown due to said banquet having hardened security courtesy of the JSDF and modern technology.

There will be an arc heavily concentrated on Earth.

  • The majority of the series so far is focused on the Special Region. Even though events have occurred in Earth, these are for short periods of time. Eventually, there'll be something that force events to make place more in Earth. Especially considering how One of the Princes of the Empire has now allied himself with Earth nations.

Shino Kuribayashi will become an Apostle of Emroy

With all the conflict and war going on the other side of the Gate, and the existence of a precious soul such as Itami originating there, Emroy might become interested in Earth. Judging by the Battle of Italica, Shino Kuribayashi certainly has the battle lust for it. That Back-to-Back Badass moment with Rory practically portrays them as equals. Instead of an axe, she will carry the weapons she is familiar with, a handgun and a rifle, but her formal attire as a priestess will be the same. She may try to alter it into something more like her JSDF uniform.

Admittedly, there are a number of things that make this guess doubtful.

Kuribayashi is someone who, while bloodthirsty, takes their soldiering seriously. Her throwing in with Emroy takes away from her duties and places additional rules onto her plate. Then there is her method of dating. If she were to become as strong as Rory, then her search would become all the harder. The biggest thing that you can argue, however, is Emroy's position on lives. Emroy doesn't care who lives and who dies. Kuribayashi is a soldier, and as the JSDF has shown they want to protect lives if they're innocent. Rory said it herself (probably paraphrased), "Guilty, innocent, it doesn't matter to Emroy."
