Toph's mother is dead
Satoru asks Lao about how he said he didn't have a family. While it's clear that he's disowned Toph, one has to wonder what happened to his wife. Lao's also is seen sadly looking at a photo of him, his wife and his daughter, before Toph walks in, possibly indicating that he misses her (as he's currently angry enough at Toph to deny being related) and that even if he and Toph reconcile, his wife and her mother are gone, and they won't be a family again.
  • Jossed. In a Legend of Korra's flashback Toph sends her daughter Suyin to her grandparents (plural)'s home, so Poppy is alive. But there is the posibility of Lao and Poppy (temporarily) separating. Perhaps Poppy was willing to make amends with Toph but Lao was opposed because his pride, they had an argument and she went to live with relatives or something like that.
    • And separation it is, as seen in the preview pages.
Lady Tienhai's death was a suicide.
She wanted her friendship with Old Iron back, but at the same time she didn't want to abandon the humans and the city. She knew she couldn't have both of them and killed herself because her despair.
  • Jossed. She got ill and died. And, being a spirit, she didn't truly die.
Loban will get himself lynched.
In the part 3's preview we see him being the same utter jerk to his workers as part 2. But this time all of them are trapped underneath a mine. At least two of those workers are Rough Rhinos' members (known for their violence) and it's Loban's fault they are there in first place. Between the stress because the life or death situation, Loban being a jerk AND the only responsible for the ordeal, things can get nasty. And the rest of people there can't/won't help him.
  • Jossed. He is a jerk in Part 3 at first, but he eventually gets his act together and reconciles with Satoru. He's later shown participating in the festival at the end of the comic.
The Iron Mine collapse was Toph's doing.
She couldn't win her dad over with her accomplishments so she took drastic measures. The evidence that follows.
  • Toph is the first onscreen Metal Bender. So manipulating iron to be unstable would be child's play to her.
  • It wouldn't be the first time a member of the Gaang did questionable out of character things:
    • Aang lying to the warring groups in "The Great Divide"
    • Katara bloodbending the man who (she thinks) killed her mother, after she vowed never to bloodbend again.
    • Zuko switching sides after being an established good guy.

With Toph being the only one on and offscreen not using her techniques even the ones she invented for questionable purposes. Much like her life changing adventure with Zuko, she's the last to do so.
