I AM GOD. note

Vs Sonic.exe was a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod created by RightBurstUltra and directed by SasterSub0ru and CommandoDev, formerly directed by Comgaming_Nz and Razencro. It was a crossover between Friday Night Funkin' and the Sonic.exe Creepypasta.

Boyfriend and Girlfriend have found themselves stuck in a video game once again; problem is, this video game is the haunted Sonic.exe, and the titular character himself has just finished off the plot of the original pasta. Boyfriend, in all of his brilliance and ever the Fearless Fool, decides to challenge the demon to a rap battle, as he does, and thus gets himself into a situation with all sorts of famous (and infamous) classic Sonic the Hedgehog horror stories.

An update to the mod called Vs Sonic.exe Round 2 released on November 25th, 2021, featuring more Sonic creepypasta characters, including the primary artist's own version of Sonic.exe and Tails Doll, along with Fleetway Super Sonic and Sanic.exe.

A second update, dubbed Update 2.5 was announced for early 2022, with new characters, new songs and a Christmas week. A teaser for one of the songs, "Slaybells", was released Christmas Day 2021. However, in January 2022, the update was cancelled owing to controversy surrounding the mod's former director, Revie_03. All content related to their EXE character was removed, and a new update with completely new content entered development.

Due to the stress it put on the developers, the mod as a whole was canceled on July 6th, 2022. To compensate, a build containing the content for the update that was finished prior to the cancellation was released to the public the next day, and a number of independent developers have gone on to make their own alterations since then. The build can be downloaded here.

So many tropes to play with, so little time:

    #-L
  • Adapted Out: As the mod is an adaption of the videogame based on the creepypasta rather than the creepypasta itself, the entire plot of Sonic.exe (AKA "X" in the creepypasta) taking human souls and turning them into his playthings, along with human characters such as Tom or Shannon Goldman, are completely absent.
  • Adaptational Curves: In the bonus songs "Faker" and "Black Sun", Girlfriend is rendered in a more proportionate artstyle, not only appearing taller than in the official "week" but also gaining some extra dimensions to her BWH measurements, including a more distinct bust and Hartman Hips that are highlighted by her jeans.
  • Adaptational Species Change:
    • "Too Slow Encore" turns the human Boyfriend into a rabbit. While her sprites weren't fully finished before the mod was cancelled, the demon Girlfriend was also going to be turned into a goat.
    • The canned song "Forestall Desire" would have made Pico a hedgehog to go with rabbit Boyfriend.
  • Addressing the Player: Lord X's Game Over quotes refer moreso to the player than just Boyfriend, especially when he mentions the overhaul he got in Round 2, using a nonstandard spectogram audio, and when he claims to play with you forever once he has your soul.
  • Affably Evil: A possible interpretation of Majin Sonic. While his friendlier smile, cartoonish animations, and catchy, non-threatening song makes him look like more of a nice guy, he still seems to forcibly assimilate Boyfriend into his group of clones should the latter lose.
  • Ambiguously Evil: While most of the Sonics are Obviously Evil, and Sunky.MPEG clearly means no harm, Majin Sonic's nature is left vague, leaving him to invoked fan interpretation.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: All versions of the mod primarily have Boyfriend as the player character: however, in the unfinished build, Starved's songs see you take control of different characters, that being Sonic for "Prey" and Tails for "Fight or Flight".
  • Anti-Climax: The unfinished "Soulless" has a slow beginning, building up with Tails doing a long solo and Boyfriend following suit... and then the song ends just before the beatdrop.
  • An Arm and a Leg: When Sonic.exe brings back Tails, Knuckles and Eggman, Tails is missing his left hand, Knuckles is missing his right, and Eggman is missing both.
  • Arrange Mode: Planned for the mod was an "Encore" mode inspired by the Encore mode in Sonic Mania and the original game's ERECT difficulty, which would remix the songs to make them more challenging. A few songs were completed before the mod was cancelled, though only "Too Slow" is available in the unfinished build.
  • Art Evolution: The Version 2 update features overhauls for most of the characters not added in the update. Sonic.exe gets altered sprites and new animations in his first stage, Majin Sonic and Lord X get their stages and sprites completely redrawn, and Sunky gets slightly better camera work. The logo of the mod also goes from a simple gold ring to a much more detailed and rusted one, better matching the title screen of the creepypasta.
  • Art Shift:
    • During one part of "You Can't Run", Sonic.exe transports himself, Boyfriend and Girlfriend to a pixelated Green Hill Zone where all of them are pixelated as if they were in a Sega Genesis game.
    • In "Sunshine", Tails Doll and Boyfriend are rendered as simplistic 3D models like those of the Sega Saturn, the Tails Doll's console of origin.
    • "Soulless" is a departure from both the usual game's style and the 3D models of "Sunshine", having a sketchy, flat color Tails Doll in reference to the piece of art commonly associated with it.
    • In the Dummied Outinvoked "Fatality", Fatal_Error and Boyfriend are both in sprites resembling those from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a game Fatal had attacked in his storyline.
    • "Prey" is rendered entirely in sprites styled after Sonic the Hedgehog. Interestingly, "Fight or Flight" goes back to the usual style.
    • "Round-a-Bout" is in a lineless style matching the art from Needlem0use's work of origin.
    • The revamped "Milk" depicts Boyfriend and Sunky in a flat-colored and much more toony style.
  • Artifact Title: While the main week does focus on Sonic.exe, only three of the bonus songs actually involve the original creepypasta, with the rest either being different Sonic creepypastas or other horror content, darker versions of Sonic from different media, or Lighter and Softer parodies of Sonic.exe.
  • Back from the Dead: Sonic.exe revives Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman and sics them on Boyfriend for "Triple Trouble".
  • Battle Aura: Fleetway Super Sonic is surrounded by a golden aura during "Chaos". Boyfriend also gets an aura upon going Super himself halfway through the song, causing Sonic to let out a Big "WHAT?!".
  • Body Horror: It just wouldn't be a proper piece of Sonic.exe media without it:
    • Sonic.exe has an additional pair of hands inside his body, as seen in his right and down poses, as well as the ending cutscene. As the hands' positions change, it almost gives the impression that something's trying to climb out of his mouth. He takes this up a notch in a section in "Too Slow", with multiple purple tongues coming out of his mouth.
    • "Cycles" gives Lord X positively warped body features, a more animalistic stance, and in his up pose, skeletal hands using his tongue as ligaments coming out of his mouth.
    • While the zombified Tails and Knuckles don't look too worse for wear, the zombified Dr. Eggman takes great detail in depicting his decomposing form, with the good doctor's brain being exposed through what skin he has left, including where his eyes would be and looking like it's about to burst out in his right pose.
    • Beyond the obvious parts of EXE's design, with the deliberate Uncanny Valley feeling of his "Faker" form and his horrifying transformation leading into "Black Sun", his creator gave this bit of trivia: EXE's "Faker" form's pupils? They aren't pupils. They're holes. The "pupils" dilating during his transformation are actually the holes growing until his eyes are pushed back into his skull. invoked
  • Boss Banter:
    • Fleetway Super Sonic's very talkative during his song "Chaos", displaying his original self's cocky nature by mocking and taunting Boyfriend constantly, but also getting visibly irritated near the end when Boyfriend still manages to keep pace with him.
    • Played for Laughs during "Personel", where Coldsteel will go on random rants during the song as part of its intentionally poor quality.
  • Boss Remix:
    • "You Can't Run" is an intense metal remix of the "Drowning" theme, with a Dark Reprise of "Green Hill Zone" thrown in there for good measure.
    • "Triple Trouble" starts picking up the tempo at the start of Eggman's part, which quickly turns into a fast-paced, intense rearrangement of the boss theme from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall:
    • Before "Too Slow" goes off the rails, Sonic.exe looks directly at the screen as he laughs, as if he's acknowledging the player's presence, then jumpscares the screen during the last leg of the song. "You Can't Run" furthers this by having him look directly at the screen as he sings.
    • "Cycles" has Lord X stare at the player in his left pose, and in his Game Over dialogue makes references to his stage's overhaul and even his status in-story as a Time Abyss, but narratively a derivative of the original Sonic.exe.
  • Breather Episode:
    • Compared to the more horror-focused nature of the rest of the mod's songs, "Milk" is a nice change of pace, being more lighthearted in both visuals and music.
    • While Fleetway Super Sonic is still a legitimate threat, "Chaos" is much more on the comedic side, with Fleetway frequently cracking wise in both the song itself and on the game over screen.
  • Brutal Bonus Level: Don't let the Lighter and Softer nature of "Milk" and "Too Fest" fool you — they are just as hard as the others, if not harder.
  • Camera Perspective Switch:
    • During Xenophanes' sections of "Triple Trouble", the camera shifts to an over-the-shoulder perspective.
    • The camera shifts to first-person during segments of "Sunshine".
    • The unfinished "Soulless" is entirely in first person.
    • "Fight or Flight" is framed in third person, behind Tails.
  • Creepy Doll: Tails Doll fits the bill, being an evil robot doll that floats, has an Uncanny Valley appearance and can do... something that hangs you to death faster than you can react.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Fleetway Super Sonic sends a laser blast Boyfriend's way during Chaos. If it's not dodged, all that'll be left of Boyfriend are his balls and a pile of ash.
  • Contagious Laughter: Soul Eggman has a tendency to laugh after his verses, perhaps implying some form of Personality Remnant after Sonic's takeover of his body. Somewhat unsettlingly, Boyfriend may match this with a lighthearted giggle of his own despite the horrifying situation playing out in front of him.
  • Damage Over Time:
    • "Black Sun" has Boyfriend's health passively drain when he misses notes. Unlike the standard health drain of other mods, there is no way to gain health back after losing it.
    • "Fight or Flight" has a "Fear" mechanic that builds up over time, which in turn drains the health bar. Missing notes further increases the Fear meter while hitting notes decreases it slightly.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: As menacing as he is, Majin Sonic's grandiose, almost clown-like animations combined with the more jovial tone of "Endless" demonstrate that he's more concerned with having a fun time than hurting anyone... though while not evil, he is still dangerous.
  • Dark Reprise: Partway through "You Can't Run", Sonic.exe warps the environment to that of the Genesis-era Green Hill Zone, complete with a warped cover of the stage theme fitting the style of the song.
  • Denser and Wackier:
    • Sunky.MPEG, as a Lighter and Softer parody of Sonic.exe himself, completely trashes the mod's serious, horror-based nature in favor of heaping helpings of Stylistic Suck and memetic leitmotifs.
    • Sanic.exe is even more of a parody than Sunky.MPEG, being an even worse drawn Sonic who battles Boyfriend in GMod with an goofy rendition of Green Hill Zone.
    • Lord X was taken utterly seriously in the original mod, but his overhaul for "Cycles" isn't quite as stern (despite the new Body Horror in his up pose). His other poses are much goofier, especially his right pose, and the flower in the middle is now holding a sign telling people the arms do not belong to Knuckles.
    • One of the characters in the 3.0 update is Coldsteel the Hedgeheg, a parody of poorly-made and needlessly edgy Sonic original characters that frequently popped up from the mid-2000s to the early 2010s. He's not even remotely threatening and his entire existence within the mod is pure, unfiltered Stylistic Suck.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Not only does Boyfriend beat .exe in a rap battle, he lives to tell the tale when Girlfriend effectively gives .exe a Bitch Slap. When .exe then tries to kill Boyfriend again, Girlfriend simply puts a barrier around him with a cheeky little smile.
  • Easter Egg:
    • After beating the main game, you unlock the Sound Test and get shown a number of codes. Entering these codes into the Sound Test has a number of results; most of them lead to simple joke images or videos, but several of them give you Optional Bosses.
    • One of Lord X's game over voice-lines is more of a weird techno frequency noise than dialogue, but putting it into a spectrogram reveals an image of Boyfriend held limp by strings. The full image this originates from an artwork depicting Lord X puppeteer-ing Boyfriend by the strings.
    • Getting Majin Sonic's Non-Standard Game Over, including the game crash, uploads a text file to your desktop, which consists of a Madness Mantra of "FUN IS INFINITE" spanning beyond the limits of readability.
  • Easy-Mode Mockery: Attempting to beat the main week on Easy or Normal will end the game after "Too Slow", telling the player they were "too slow" and asking if they want to try again, ie on Hard.
  • Eldritch Location: While the burning Green Hill Zone shown in "Too Slow" is already this, "Cycles" takes it up a notch, with flowers with eyes in their centers, flailing arms coming out of the bushes, and trees filled with coconuts that have sharp teeth.
  • Epic Rocking: The final song of the week is "Triple Trouble", a grueling eight-minute-long battle against Xenophanes and the mutilated corpses of Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Robotnik.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Sonic.exe's voice is a very, very low-pitched rumble.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Some of Fleetway Super Sonic's game over quotes may hint that he has a rivalry with Sonic.exe (or feels the so-called "faker" is cramping his style).
  • Elongating Arm Gag: Sunky.MPEG's left note animation has his arms extend comedically. One of them even does a loop-de-loop.
  • Fearless Fool: Boyfriend witnesses Sonic.exe impale Tails' head onto a pike and his first reaction is to of course challenge him to a rap battle.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Sonic.exe accepts Boyfriend's challenge instead of killing him on the spot and gives him a fair (if brutal) fight... only to prove an extreme Sore Loser once he's beaten, pulling out all the stops just to kill him.
  • Flipping the Bird: Fleetway Super Sonic's forward animation has him raise his middle finger to Boyfriend.
  • For the Evulz: Just like in his home Creepypasta, Sonic.exe creates games for his own twisted amusement, and when Boyfriend challenges him to a rap battle, it's just another game to .exe. However, after losing at this game, he doesn't handle it very well.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: Getting a Game Over on the song "Endless" results in a time limit to restart the song. If the timer runs out, Boyfriend will be converted into another Majin, followed by the game forcibly crashing. In the Round 2 update, the crash now creates a document called 'fun.txt", which is just made up of "FUN IS INFINITE" repeated over and over.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • The intro video prior to the Round 2 update, after the "Vs Sonic.exe" title is shown, features a series of lines delivered rapid-fire:
      ENJOY THE MOD
      THE FUN IS INFINITE
SO MANY SOULS TO PLAY WITH
      SO LITTLE TIME...
      WYOMING DOES NOT EXIST
      SHOUSOUS TO UHHHHHH
IT AIN'T EVEN THAT HARD BRO
      YOU LOST, SKILL ISSUE
      SADDAM HUSSEIN MOD
OOO THIS DUDE IS SCARED OF SONIC
      JUST CLICK THE ARROWS
      WEEK 2, MAYBE!?!???
      :)
    • In the cutscene for "You Can't Run", Girlfriend's eyes shine with a barely visible red light before she protects Boyfriend from Sonic.exe.
  • Game-Over Man:
    • Similar to Tankman, Fleetway Super Sonic has certain things to say if Boyfriend loses to him. Some of these quotes are jabs towards Sonic.exe.
      "That was almost too easy!"
"Let's do that again sometime! When you're a little less... dead."
      "Who's God now?! Hah!"
      "It's all about speed, pal!"
"That blood crying faker's got nothing on me!"
"What does hyper realistic even mean?"
"Super Sonic does what .exe... uh... doesn't... do?"
"Looks like your fun was limited!"
"That was a nice argument. Unfortunately, you were burnt to a crisp by my laser eyes!"
"If little hedgehogs covered in blood give you nightmares, you ain't ready to fight with me!"
"Imagine being an executable file. Heh! Couldn't be me."
    • Lord X also has a few things to say if he defeats Boyfriend.
      "Hello... old friend."
"I am the first... but not the original."
"Did you enjoy the improvements I made?"
"Once I have your soul, we will play... Forever."
  • Getting Smilies Painted on Your Soul: Losing to Majin Sonic and not retrying causes him to turn Boyfriend into a fledgling member of his group.
  • Ghostly Gape: Sonic.exe never closes his mouth, leaving it heavily ajar the entire time. This is most noticeable when he gives his first Evil Laugh in "Too Slow" before the speed-up and in his Jump Scare near the end. This is also the case with Knuckles, Lord X, and -EXE.
  • Gimmick Level: Compared to the rest of the game, "Black Sun" has a much different way of handling HP; instead of gaining HP when hitting notes and losing HP when missing, EXE has a passive health drain effect that starts off nearly non-existent and gets progressively worse with each note missed, and you have no way to heal.
  • A God Am I: Sonic.exe drops his famous "I AM GOD" quote during "Too Slow" before unleashing one hell of an Evil Laugh.
  • Groin Attack: Inverted. If you die during "Chaos", everything but Boyfriend's blue balls turns to ash.
  • Guide Dang It!: The game gives the player zero hints as to how they can access "Milk". "Milk" isn't a song accessed via a Sound Test code, but rather accessed by pressing Up->Down->Left->Right->Enter on the title screen, but the player likely wouldn't have known of this without watching a showcase video of the mod or reading the mod's wiki page.
  • Interface Screw:
    • "Too Slow" has static and creepy images flashing by throughout the song. Failing to hit a static note adds even more static and drains health to boot. Towards the end of the song, another Sonic.exe appears in front of the camera for a Jump Scare, blocking the player's view for a few seconds. "You Can't Run" and "Triple Trouble'" retain the static notes, but the latter song has green static cover the screen at certain intervals and even swaps Boyfriend's position and notes to the other side of the screen for a while.
    • "Triple Trouble" introduces Knuckles's segment of the song by abruptly flipping the normal placement of characters, with Knuckles on the right and Boyfriend on the left. This carries into the second Sonic.exe's segment, but abruptly flips back when Robotnik takes the stage.
    • "Endless" has the notes occasionally spin to the music and turns them blue halfway through the song.
    • The revamped "Milk" has artwork of Sunky occasionally hover across the screen, which are likely to block the player's view of the notes.
    • Half way into the revamped "Too Fest", the screen will be covered by MLG memes such as weed smoke, crosshairs, and a gif of a Snoop Dogg.
    • "Sunshine" contains an odd screen effect where the notes coming in are slightly off-centered. There is also a section where the screen is blacked out save for Tails Doll's lure and the two sets of arrows are combined into one in the center, which is solely used by Boyfriend despite Tails Doll singing throughout.
    • "Black Sun" does away with the opponent's arrows, leaving it harder to tell what's coming up next.
    • "Fatality" fills the screen with pop-ups that obscure the arrows and need to be clicked with the mouse and during the final leg of the song, Fatal_Error causes the game window itself to move around.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: EXE's Sonic disguise during "Faker" is very convincing... save for his completely red shoes, blue arms, and lack of a mouth in his idle.
  • Ironic Name: "Sunshine"'s only light source comes from a single spotlight on the ceiling, and at one point that goes off, too.
  • I Shall Taunt You:
    • According to invoked Word of God, Sonic.exe's poses during "You Can't Run" appear as they do because he's actually taunting Boyfriend. His revamped sprites in the unfinished build show this off more clearly, with him intentionally being over the top until he gets angry.
    • Lord X's new left pose has him looking at the screen with a smug grin while pointing at Boyfriend, as if to say "get a load of this guy".
    • Throughout "Chaos", Super Sonic mocks and taunts Boyfriend, before becoming exasperated that Boyfriend can keep up with him.
  • Jump Scare: This being Sonic.exe, of course there would be one. Specifically, another Sonic.exe jumps out at the player near the end of "Too Slow", blocking the screen for a while. Oddly, it's the only real jumpscare in the mod.
  • Kill the Lights: At one point in "Sunshine", the lights switch off, leaving you in complete darkness for a segment.
  • Knight of Cerebus:
    • Inverted with Sunky.MPEG. While the other Sonics in this mod are nightmarish to varying degrees and want Boyfriend either dead or a part of them, Sunky just wants to play, dance, and eat cereal with him. His song also consists of leitmotifs from meme songs, making it still catchy, but endearing rather than creepy. A justified case since he is based off a Lighter and Softer Affectionate Parody of Sonic.exe.
    • Also inverted with Sanic.exe, who is straight up Played for Laughs.
  • Leitmotif: Fitting for its association with the character, the "Drowning" theme appears all over the place in Sonic.exe's songs, and even plays in the transition cutscene between -EXE's "Faker" and "Black Sun".
  • Light Is Not Good: Fleetway Super Sonic is golden just like the form is in the games, but is an antithesis of everything Sonic is and stands for.

    M-Z
  • The Many Deaths of You:
    • Losing to Sonic.exe and Lord X provides a unique Retry screen, with his face and glowing red eyes staring from the black background, and both of his hands flanking Boyfriend. Pressing Retry has him clap his hands together, cutting to static just before they close fully. As of Round 2, Lord X's death screen returns to the vanilla death screen, but he also talks to the player in a raspy voice.
    • Losing to Majin Sonic provides a timed Retry screen. If you don't continue within ten seconds, then a special animation of the Majin Sonic clones closing in on Boyfriend to convert him into one of them plays, followed by the game closing itself.
    • Losing to Sunky.MPEG causes Boyfriend to start dancing in the same manner as Sunky himself in a stark contrast to the disturbing game-overs of the other characters.
    • Losing to Tails Doll shows Boyfriend apparently hanging from a noose in a black void with no expression and his eyes covered in shadows.
    • Losing to -EXE during "Black Sun" shows a static image of his face. This is secretly timed, and taking too long to retry causes the image to suddenly spring to life with a Jump Scare, followed by the game closing itself.
    • Losing to Fleetway Super Sonic has him vaporizing Boyfriend and then making fun of him.
    • Losing to Sanic provides a GMod cutscene where Sanic kills Boyfriend by touching him.
    • Losing in "Prey" isn't as disturbing, as Sonic simply trips over into a "Continue?" screen. Evidently less painful than what he suffers in the full song.
    • Losing in "Fight or Flight" leads to a very disturbing obscured scene with Tails successfully being devoured by Starved, and a "No Memory" screen obscuring the worst of it.
    • Losing to Needlem0use leads to a shot of Boyfriend's corpse dangled on strings, as if he's now being puppeteered by Sarah.
    • Losing to Fatal_Error causes Boyfriend to get corrupted and turned into one of his puppets.
  • Marathon Level:
    • "Triple Trouble" has Sonic.exe put Boyfriend through a gauntlet of corrupted souls, with Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman's zombified corpses providing the bulk of the song as Boyfriend fights through the illusion to see .exe's true form. It lasts eight and a half minutes — the longest song in the original game, "Monster", is just under three minutes. The main counterbalance to this is that during this song, you can collect rings that protect you from one miss each.
    • Unreleased song "Manual Blast" is a little bit behind "Triple Trouble", lasting almost seven minutes in total.
  • Meaningful Background Event: During Starved's segment of "Prey", Furnace is seen flying beneath the bridge and past Sonic and Starved. The end of the song sees Sonic not paying attention and running straight into a waiting Furnace, leading to his death.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • "Triple Trouble" is three songs in one, bridged by segments where you face off against Sonic.EXE.
    • Sonic.exe's true name, Xenophanes, is shared by a Greek philosopher who was a known critic of the polytheistic Greek pantheon. Fitting for a creature that calls himself the capital-g God.
  • Musical Nod: All over the place in the main story's three songs.
    • "Too Slow" begins as a recreation of "Hill Act 1" from the Sonic.exe hack, then transitions into a Boss Remix of the "Drowning" theme. The Encore version also has a snippet referencing "Angel Island Zone Act 2".
    • "You Can't Run" starts as an even more intense Boss Remix of the "Drowning" theme than "Too Slow". Then it segues into a Dark Reprise of "Green Hill Zone" from the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, and after that, it's more of the "Drowning" theme mixed with original material.
    • "Triple Trouble" quotes the "Chemical Plant Zone" theme during Tails.exe's part, "Unknown from M.E." during Knuckles.exe's part, and the boss battle music from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 during Robotnik.exe's part. The interludes where Boyfriend faces off against Xenophanes feature the "Drowning" theme, "You Can't Run", and, later on, bits of "Endless".
  • Neck Snap: When you lose to Tails Doll, the doll hangs Boyfriend off a noose, with the game's usual bone crack sound used for Boyfriend's neck breaking.
  • No Fair Cheating: If you attempt to use the botplay option baked into the mod's engine, Lord X will simply take over the screen to say "NO CHEATING".
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Too Slow starts off... rather slow, with half a minute of the song consisting of nothing from Sonic.exe other standing and staring at Boyfriend while a theme very similar to "Hill Act 1" plays. When he does eventually start singing, unsettling animations and vocals aside, it stills carries the same calming yet foreboding tone beforehand. It's only when he suddenly turns to the player with his Evil Laugh that he takes things up a notch, with the music switching to a rendition of the infamous Sonic drowning theme.
  • Odd Name Out: When being faced with various monstrosities, evil versions, and memes of Sonic, Tails Doll and Starved stand out considering they're, obviously, not a version of Sonic, but rather Tails and Robotnik respectively.
  • Ominous Pipe Organ: It's difficult to hear amidst the chaos of "Triple Trouble", but Xenophanes's voice clips are a mashup between Sonic.exe's normal basso profundo and a higher-pitched organ tone that gives him a Voice of the Legion.
  • One-Winged Angel:
    • .exe's true form in "Triple Trouble", Xenophanes, is much larger and lankier than his normal state, with an x-shaped scar on his chest like Lord X, and purple crystalline tips on his quills, ears and eyebrows.
    • Fatal Error spends most of the song in his Sonic guise, but during the last leg of the fight, he shows his significantly larger true form.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Unlike the other opponents showcased, Boyfriend takes Fatal_Error way more seriously than the rest, as his sprites show possible frustration or anger towards the being. One of Fatal_Error's puppets in the background looks like Girlfriend, implying Boyfriend's treating him seriously because Fatal_Error took her away from him.
  • Optional Boss: Sunky.MPEG, the friendly joke version of Sonic.exe, was added in the second update. Unlike the other secret songs, his song is accessed by pressing Up->Down->Left->Right->Enter on the title screen.
  • Original Character: EXE was made for the mod by the mod's former director, Revie_03, rather than being a pre-existing character like everyone else. One of the scrapped characters for the 3.0 update was Sl4sh, who was created by MarStarBro, another director for the mod as well as one of its composers.
  • Overly-Long Tongue: Sonic.exe and Lord X have long tongues stick out in their up poses, both of which are also purple and hideously malformed. This is something unique to the mod's interpretation of the two.
  • Perpetual Smiler:
    • Majin Sonic, in all his poses and even his losing icon, can't change his expression of sporting a really huge smile.
    • Needlem0use and Sarah don't stop smiling throughout "Round-A-Bout", with the closest to a change in expression either make is Sarah's smile changing in how she does it depending on her pose.
  • Pop-Cultured Badass: Fleetway Super Sonic is immensely cocky and quips it up throughout "Chaos", but where he shines are the game over quotes, where he does things like ask what "Hyper Realistic" actually means, uses a variation of the famous "Genesis Does What Nintendon't" tagline, and even quotes Shadow's "Unfortunately, I had sexual intercourse with your mother" meme.
  • Punny Name:
    • The scrapped song "Slaybells", a Christmas song involving Sonic.exe and Lord X, both of which are Serial Killers.
    • Another on a similar note is "Missiletoe", another scrapped Christmas song involving Sonic.exe and Tails Doll.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Wouldn't be Sonic.exe without it. The exact eyes vary by character;
    • Sonic.exe himself used to downplay it; they're white in his original idle animation, and several times he's shown without eyes at all. Round 2 gives him red eyes in all his poses for "Too Slow", and flips between that and no eyes in "You Can't Run" before going back to permanent red eyes in "Triple Trouble".
    • Lord X's eyes used to have red crosses in them, but these were removed in the overhaul.
    • Majin Sonic lacks eyes entirely, except on the original teaser image for the mod (to properly frame him in darkness).
    • "Faker" EXE has Classic black eyes in his disguised form, and no eyes in his true form.
    • Subverted with Fleetway Super Sonic (who has red spirals for eyes but his actual sclera is white) and Tails Doll (as his eyes are just black dots).
    • Sanic.exe just has two red dots for eyes.
  • Reference Overdosed: "Execution" and "Milk" (particularly the original version) are more Leitmotif-based than other songs, as the former is poking fun at the original pasta's infamous unoriginality while the latter can be seen as a veritable love letter to its own origin. Lord X's new song "Cycles" is fully original, while the new version of "Milk" cuts down on some of the references.
  • Retcon:
    • The 2.0 update completely removed Lord X's original song "Execution" and replaced it with "Cycles".
    • Following the Revie incident, EXE and his songs "Faker" and "Black Sun" were removed in the 3.0 update.
  • Rule of Three: There are a lot of 3s in this mod, which may or may not be coincidental:
    • Before Sunky.MPEG was added, there were three opponents in the mod.
    • Three other Majin Sonics watch the main one and Boyfriend sing "Endless" in Round 1, though this was boosted to 7 in Round 2.
    • Three arms pop out of the jaw bush during "Execution" and "Cycles".
    • "Triple Trouble" has you fight Sonic.exe's three victims, followed by Xenophanes in between.
    • Sonic.exe's week in Round 2 introduces three mechanics with each song, "Too Slow" introduces static notes that take a huge chunk of Boyfriend's health if missed, "You Can't Run" introduces phantom notes that cause stacking albeit temporary health drain if hit while including the aforementioned static notes, and "Triple Trouble" uses the prior notes and introduces ring notes that prevent damage from missed notes for each ring obtained (Health drain from phantom notes still happens).
  • Shameless Self-Promoter: At the end of "Personel", Coldsteel tells the viewer (or perhaps Boyfriend) to follow him on Newgrounds.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sore Loser:
    • After losing at the end of "Too Slow", Sonic.exe crushes his microphone before attempting to kill Boyfriend anyway, only for Girlfriend to stop him from following through. He then continues to hound the two in an attempt to murder Boyfriend.
    • Fleetway Super Sonic starts off cocky, but gets pissed when Boyfriend manages to keep up with him, culminating in him screaming in pure fury when he realizes he's been beat.
  • Stylistic Suck:
    • Sonic.exe's sprites are notably less polished and more Off-Model than those of Lord X and Majin Sonic, especially when compared to the more detailed images flashed on-screen during his song. Of course, one could argue that contributes to his creepy performance in the mod. This is subverted with his form during "Triple Trouble", Xenophanes, which is much more detailed and has more animation fluidity.
    • As part of his parodical status, Sunky.MPEG is simplistically drawn and only has basic shading, with his down pose outright lacking shading. His idle pose and exclusive Game Over screen also involve "dancing", which is just a static image of the character hopping back and forth.
    • Sanic.exe takes the most amongst the bunch in this regard. His idle is a twitching still image, the background is taken directly from G-Mod, and the game over screen has a still image of Sanic run into a G-Mod model of Boyfriend, causing the latter to explode into gore.
    • The 3.0 update introduces another joke Sonic, the infamous Coldsteel the Hedgeheg, and with him another song drenched in intentional shittiness. His sprites are intentionally poorly drawn, his up pose turns him into a recolored 16-bit Sonic sprite (notably one from SRB2), and he constantly spouts out random rants straight from the mouth of a typical edgy teenager. Unlike the others, however, his suckage bleeds even into the song itself, with the middle section devolving into a discordant mess of off-key sounds that even takes a riff from the original version of "Welcome", a song infamous for how awful it sounds. invoked
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Like in his comic of origin, Fleetway Super Sonic is the insane, bloodthirsty Super Form of Sonic brought on by close proximity to the Chaos Emeralds or immense emotional turmoil.
  • Suspicious Video-Game Generosity: "Black Sun" starts with Boyfriend's HP at 100%, rather than 50%... because EXE has a passive Damage Over Time effect that gets worse with each note missed, and absolutely no way to heal yourself.
  • Token Good Teammate: Sunky.MPEG is the only actually friendly Sonic the player faces in this mod, who just wants to sing and have breakfast with Boyfriend. Losing to him simply has Boyfriend dance with him.
  • Turns Red: Both "Too Slow" and "Triple Trouble" increase the tempo in mid-song.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Needlem0use is the only female opponent in the mod.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • The mod's main storyline is Sonic.exe slowly but surely losing it as he initially humors Boyfriend wanting to rap battle him, only to immediately make an attempt on BF's life after BF wins, only for Girlfriend to casually stop him, forcing him to rap battle BF again, then lose again, driving him to such a rage that the digital landscape corrupts as he then pulls out all the stops, summoning the spirits of Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman, and shifting into his true form as Xenophanes. He still loses. Seeing as Sonic.exe almost always wins in his own media, usually unfairly, he unsurprisingly takes his inability to win against BF and GF poorly.
      Sonic.exe: WHY YOU LITTLE-
      Sonic.exe: JUST! DIE!
    • Initially taunting Boyfriend multiple times during "Chaos" and generally acting as a Smug Super, Fleetway Super Sonic is reduced to growling and screaming in anger when Boyfriend not only manages to keep up with him, but even goes Super himself.
  • The Worf Effect: For someone who infamously rarely lost in his own media, Sonic.exe not only loses to Boyfriend, but actually takes a hit from Girlfriend pretty poorly, stunning him as her and Boyfriend go on their way. When he regains his senses and goes after Boyfriend again, Girlfriend simply stops him again, and .exe's attempts to best Boyfriend at his own game by pulling out every trick he has prove moot.
