Video Game / Vs. FNaF

Go To

Vs FNAF is a series of Game Mods for Friday Night Funkin' made by Pouria SFMs that features the animatronics of Five Nights at Freddy's as opponents, each mod being based on specific games in the series.

The general plot of each mod, if there's any, is as follows: Boyfriend finds himself in the respective Fazbear location late at night, with him inevitably facing off against the resident animatronics in a rap/singing battle. The following mods are:

  • VS FNaF 1: Based on the first game, focusing on the classic four animatronics for the five weeks. Boyfriend, ever the Fearless Fool, decides to take his girl and her speakers into the infamous Freddy Fazbear's Pizza at night, with the Fazbear gang making themselves known shortly after.
  • VS FNaF 2: Based on the second game, with the opponents being the Toy and Withered animatronics. Boyfriend and Girlfriend find themselves breaking into Freddy Fazbear's Pizza out of hunger, not realizing that pizzerias don't typically offer their services in the middle of the night.
  • Daycare Deathtrap: Based on Security Breach, the primary week focusing on the Daycare Attendant.
  • VS FNaF 3: Based on the third game, which focuses on the series' Big Bad, alongside Boyfriend now having to overcome the trauma he had suffered from the previous mods and lay the monster who started these nightmares in his tomb once and for all. This mod currently stands as the final one to release in this set.

Tropes:

    In General
  • Fearless Fool: Boyfriend, as per usual, thought it would be a good idea to challenge each of the Hostile Animatronics to a rap battle. Downplayed, as while he's not above challenging them to rap battles, he does know when to run away from danger, if just to rap battle them again.
  • Out of Focus: Girlfriend. While she appears at the beginning of 1 and 2, she seems to get phased out either halfway through or by the end. It gets to the point where she's almost entirely absent for 3.
  • Shout-Out: Both installments of the mod have their songs borrow melodies from different songs, usually FNaF related.
    • "Join the Band" features the chorus line for "Five More Nights" by JT Music.
    • "Hop To It" has Shadow Bonnie emerge to sing a particularly memorable verse off of "Cycles" by UpTaunt, from the Vs. Sonic.EXE mod.
    • "Cerberus" has Mangle sing the instrumentation behind TryHardNinja's "It's Me". This motif is a Recurring Riff throughout the FNaF 2 mod overall, primarily in the main menu theme.
    • "Golden Vengeance" has Golden Freddy sing along to the first "Five Nights at Freddy's" song composed by The Living Tombstone, as well as "I've Got No Time" after hitting his breaking point. The Puppet, Meanwhile, slows down the song to sing a verse from TryHardNinja's "Puppet Song".

    VS FNaF 1
  • Bait-and-Switch Boss: For the first week at least (Week F), you expect to fight Freddy all the way through his week, but before the third song "Broken Inside", he collapses on the floor and his yellow-colored counterpart Golden Freddy, takes his place for the song.
  • Big Eater: Chica, as per usual, stuffing her beak with pizza after "Midnight Snack". Becomes a gameplay mechanic in "One More Bite" where she chows down on the pizza notes you collect, and if there aren’t enough…
  • The Cameo:
    • At different points throughout, Shadow Freddy will appear in the background of BF's various rap battles with the animatronics, sometimes out of view like behind GF's speakers in "Terrorizing". Shadow Freddy eventually gets his own song "Backroom", doubling as a Chekhov's Gunman.
    • "Power Outage" features Springtrap lying against the wall at the back behind BF, mostly out of frame.
  • Cover Version:
    • "Let Us In", "Slaughter" and "Dead Inside", which served as Freddy's songs in the original release of the mod, are based on The Living Tombstone's FNAF songs. "Let Us In" is based on The Living Tombstone's FNAF 1 song, "Slaughter" is based on The Living Tombstone's FNAF 2 song "It's Been So Long", and "Dead Inside" (Or as it was originally called, "Fired"), is based on The Living Tombstone's FNAF: Sister Location song "I Can't Fix You".
    • Foxy's second song "Walk The Plank" is a remixed FNF cover of DAGames' FNAF 3 song "It's Time To Die", just with Foxy and BF singing the vocals.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The first week was initially a standalone week for Freddy himself, which shows in the many ways it contrasts to the rest of the mod.
    • In terms of tone, Freddy Fazbear is portrayed like an actual haunted animatronic, even as he's encountered in the typical FNF Rhythm Game manner. Later weeks shift the tone lighter, Denser and Wackier: giving the others some characterization beyond being haunted, and by the time Freddy is encountered in Week C, he's less haunted and wanting blood, and more-so done with BF's presence.
    • This is the only week with a dialogue segment, even if just for the introduction.
    • There are no One-Hit Kill mechanics in this week.
  • Joke Level: Three of the songs available in Freeplay are less songs, or even levels for that matter, but simply Stylistic Suck jokes originating from memes.
    • "Beatbox" is a rip of Abdul Cisse (who's the opponent here) singing a rapid-fire low-quality beatbox version of the Five Night's At Freddy's Song by The Living Tombstone. You don't get any inputs for the song, either.
    • "Freddy Assbear" is BF rap battling against Freddy Fazbear... while he periodically twerks like the giga-chad meme.
    • "Freddy Fazballs" consists of Freddy Fazbear dipping his balls in the McDonald's soda dispenser, to the protest of the Cashier, with him defending his actions by proclaiming America a free country, one he fought for in the war.
  • Jump Scare: In true Five Nights at Freddy's fashion, you get one of these as a game over screen.
  • Meat-O-Vision: After "Rummager", Chica starts to see BF as a large pizza, making her hungry enough to chase after BF, leading into the song "One More Bite."
  • Nominal Hero: The Puppet, for one reason or another despite being the Big Bad/Big Good responsible for the animatronics being haunted, sings alongside BF for the entirety of "The Happiest Day" against the FNAF 1 cast.
  • One-Hit Kill: Every animatronic besides Freddy and Golden Freddy have this during their week, and "The Happiest Day" also features them:
    • Week B’s "Shut The Door" has door notes that must be hit to stop Bonnie from coming into the office.
    • "One More Bite" has Chica kill you if you don’t have enough pizza slices when she goes to eat them, as well as the cupcake notes that must be evaded. Notably, Chica’s mechanics do not appear in "The Happiest Day".
    • "Walk The Plank" has sword notes that must be hit for BF to evade Foxy’s sword, and "Lost At Sea" has Foxy shoot his ship’s cannon, prefaced with a warning to hold SPACE to dodge. The latter mechanic does not appear in "The Happiest Day".
  • The Pig-Pen: While the animatronics in canon do have a stench problem, Chica here is a blatant standout, particularly after "Midnight Snack". Her rapid feasting not only leaves her covered in pizza, but also infested with roaches.
  • Punched Across the Room: Week C’s intro cutscene has Boyfriend bother Freddy for a rap battle; the latter backhands BF so hard he’s sent pinballing across the room and into the kitchen on the other side.
  • Recurring Riff: TheLivingTombstone's FNAF 1 song, and by extension, the Toreador March, is featured throughout each week in some manner.
  • Shout-Out: "Walk The Plank" is a Cover Version of the FNAF 3 song "It's Time To Die", with the background featuring a poster of the DAGames logo to further the reference.
  • Sore Loser:
    • Bonnie takes the battle against Boyfriend serious enough that after "Terrorizing", he tosses his guitar aside and starts chasing after BF into the office.
    • Foxy losing to BF at an arcade game prompts him to plunge his hook into the arcade cabinet screen and chase BF out of Pirate's Cove.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: As the later weeks progress, BF's insistence on rap battling each of the Fazbear crew results in this attitude of varying degrees, most apparent with Freddy Fazbear in Week C. The final Week emphasizes this with its title "Freddy and Friends are tired of your shit."
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: By Week P, Girlfriend goes from being given less focus in the other weeks to disappearing completely, not showing for even the final week.

    VS FNaF 2
  • Boss Remix: "Your Old Friends", along with pitting Boyfriend against the Withered Animatronics one more time, brings along the leitmotifs from each of their songs. Withered Bonnie's segment uses "Faceless"'s leitmotifs, Withered Chica brings her song melody from "Broken Jaws", Withered Foxy throws out his "Pirate's Curse" melodies, and Withered Freddy uses a faster version of the leitmotifs from "Fallen Star".
  • Composite Character: Shadow Bonnie in canon is an entity ambiguous relevance with seemingly no direct connection to the main plot or Toy Bonnie, what they appear to be based on. In the mod, they manifest from Toy Bonnie halfway through his song, being fought as an extension of the animatronic.
  • Declaration of Protection: To signal their solo act against Golden Freddy, the Puppet gives this line:
Puppet: The others are under MY protection.
  • Token Good Teammate: Toy Freddy seems to hold no ill-will towards Boyfriend, nor embody the Hostile Animatronics trope, so much so that in the finale, he sings alongside BF against the rest of the Toy animatronics after his section is complete, seemingly to knock some sense into them.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The names of the two weeks, featuring the new Toy and the old Withered animatronics respectively, are "Something New!" and "Something Borrowed..." respectively, named after the teaser image featuring both Bonnies.
    • For the Withered animatronic's songs in their week, they each have segments that reference their appearance and poses on the cameras in FNaF 2. In particular:
      • Freddy at the end of "Fallen Star" is fought in a first-person perspective in the office, like how he appears before attacking the player.
      • Foxy doesn't have a camera appearance, but twice he has a segment where he chases after BF, alluding to his general attacking method in 1 and 2 where he rushes the player instead of going from room to room.
    • For a brief segment in "Golden Vengeance" the Puppet's solo is accompanied by a backdrop of rain, alluding to the Puppet's — and by extension, their spirit's — backstory, where the kid was murdered on a rainy day in an alley and is later found by the animatronic Puppet.
    • "Gamer Fazbear" is of Toy Freddy playing Five Nights at Mr. Hugs, in direct reference to Toy Freddy's mechanic in Ultimate Custom Night. The ending even consists of Freddy getting a game over In-Universe, prompting him to Rage Quit and take his anger out on the night guard offscreen.
  • Stylistic Suck:
    • "Freddy Fartbear" is a deliberate amateur song with poor assets and charting that only does a token effort at properly syncing to the vocals. Three-fourth's of the way into it even parodies the Turns Red trope among mods, where Splinks Freddy turns angry enough to "become Satan" and follow up with a ridiculous amount of note-spam, with the vocals appropriately taking a nose-dive as well. To top it all off, the song ends with the game "crashing" — Splinks Freddy being stuck on a hold note as screen slightly fades to white with an application not responding popup in the upper left corner.
    • The cover of "Welcome (Old)", a song that's infamously known for its low quality, is appropriately low effort here as well, with un-tuned Vs. FNaF 1 Freddy vocals and low quality assets to complement it.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: Out of all the animatronics, Toy Chica in particular is hellbent on apprehending BF in the cutscenes, chasing after him into Mangle's room, chasing him again after he leaves said room, and appearing at the end of the hall from the office after BF wards off Withered Freddy.
  • Tragic Monster: Withered Freddy in particular seems to be portrayed in this manner, what with his song titled "Fallen Star" having instances of Sad Battle Music with its use of a solo violin. Downplayed, as he himself isn't portrayed as particularly tragic throughout the whole mod, outside his comment of "Don't see me as a big teddy bear now", which could simply be a threat.

    VS FNaF 3
  • Adaptational Villainy: Shadow Freddy was originally a more ambiguous creature without much information on its morals other than it being slightly more proactive than Shadow Bonnie. Here, Shadow Freddy is a drone William uses to separate the band so he can dismantle them one by one.
  • Art Shift: "Last Hour" is a replication of the art-style from the "5 AM at Fazbear's Fright" fan-animation, in contrast to most of the mod using rendered and animated SFM models for its sprites.
  • Blood from the Mouth: After the events of "Fear Forever", BF ends up coughing up blood after choking from the lack of ventilation, having (presumably) hallucinated the Phantom Animatronics in the prior song as a result.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: In tandem with the darker tone, 3 features more blood and gore — most apparent with William Afton's death by spring-lock failure, which was originally depicted in canon through faux ATARI graphics.
  • Continuity Nod: In this mod, Afton lacking one of his arms in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator is explained during the Story Mode's ending by an explosion outright dislodging it and leaving him part-crippled.
  • Darker and Edgier: In contrast to the other two Vs. FNaF mods before it, 3 is much more serious and dark in tone and story. The first two songs of the main "Week" are of the events that set in motion FNAF 3, with Afton tearing apart the animatronics and getting into the Spring Bonnie suit, subsequently showing off his gruesome spring-lock death in action. On the FNF side of things, Boyfriend's experiencing some newfound angst due to Girlfriend formally breaking up with him in the timeline prior, making him less of a Fearless Fool in response to the tense situation he finds himself in. The only exception is the bonus songs, which are just as wacky — if not moreso — than prior mods.
  • Deus ex Machina: BF getting trapped in a burning down Fazbear's Fright with Springtrap, along with his face being caved in by the latter, his death could've been assured there and then. But then as the building falls apart with him incapacitated, Girlfriend shows up to undo his fatal injuries and pulling him out of the building while he's still unconscious.
  • Flipping the Bird: Endo 02 does this at the end of his part of "Endo Revengo" towards Boyfriend as he takes his leave from a sore throat (which, amusingly, shouldn't be a problem for him).
  • A God Am I: Afton's resurrection as Springtrap after his remnant experimentation has convinced him he truly is immortal.
Springtrap: They are gone; I am not! William remains! I'VE BECOME A GOD!
  • Mythology Gag: William Afton opens the hidden room within the abandoned Fazbear's Pizzeria by typing on a specific 3x3 tile panel on the wall, just like with Fazbear Fright having a similar hidden and functional tile panel for one of the secret minigames.
  • Offscreen Breakup: BF experiences this with GF, the latter ending their relationship due to calling quits on fighting against her father constantly, all under the pretense of "making this work" at a later day. She does return to get him out of Fazbear's Fright after his job is done, though.
  • Rage Against the Author: This is done by the Endos (especially Endo 02) towards Pouria for them not being present in the previous mod, and so they've come to take their revenge in "Endo Revengo".
  • Take That, Critics!: SBEndo, in "Endo Revengo", jabs directly at the criticism thrown towards Security Breach, though it's more Played for Laughs as it cites the reasoning for it being Fantastic Racism to robots.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of the attacking Endos in "Endo Revengo", Endo 01 is the only one not out to attack Boyfriend for any reason, and even unintentionally gets Endo 02 and SBEndo more riled up at different points. Endo 01 is also notably the only one to have a Synthetic Voice Actor, whilst the other two Endos are properly voice-acted for the song.
Endo 01: (interrupting SBEndo's first turn) Can I have your autograph, MISTER-?
    SBEndo: NO! I'm BUSY!
    Endo 01: Okay.
  • Urban Legend of Zelda: Referenced with "Totally Real", with a cast made up of hoaxes people made up to start runors or as photoshop exercises, with the main two being Salvage (Springtrap reinterpreted as a version of Golden Freddy after someone mis-parsed a FNAF 3 teaser) and Phantom Bonnie (a hoax made after someone noticed everyone but Bonnie had a phantom in 3
