Video Game / Sid & Al's Incredible Toons

A Puzzle Game and spin-off of The Incredible Machine, though in this case created and published solely by Sierra Online in 1994. Just like in The Incredible Machine your goal is to complete puzzles involving elaborate Rube Goldberg Devices with a select set of parts. What sets this game apart is its wackier batch of parts that often work under Toon Physics, especially the stars Sidney Mouse and Al E. Cat who can interact with several other objects to either their benefit or detriment. The game would receive an Updated Re Release two years later called simply The Incredible Toon Machine which added more puzzles and new fully voiced cutscenes where Sid and/or Al give you a levels objective, as well as a nicely-animated intro setting up the game.

A truly bizarre version of the game would be released in 1996 exclusively in Japan for PlayStation and Sega Saturn that crosses it over with Capcom's Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise, replacing the toon characters and objects with monsters and items from the Ghosts N Goblins games.


Sid and Al's Incredible Toons provides examples of:

  • Animated Actors: Implied. The game treats the puzzles less as gadgets like in The Incredible Machine, and more as cartoon productions you are directing.
  • Anvil on Head: One of your objects is a big anvil that can be tied to some objects. Naturally, you can also drop it on Sid and Al's heads, turning the mouse into an Accordion Man for a sec and shattering the cat.
  • Artistic License – Physics: Just like its fellow Incredible Machines, the physics in this game regularly ignore fundamental laws. In this case though it is completely justified since Toon Physics are in play.
  • Banana Peel: Bananas are a food that both Sid and Al will go for. After eating it they will throw away the peel which can then be slipped on, sending Al flying into the air whilst Sid slips forever until he hits a wall. If you want to wreak havoc immediately, you can program the banana to just be a peel right off the bat.
  • Big Eater: Both Sid and Al are this given they will both eat any food without stopping, though Al especially stands out for his gluttony. He will eat a whole bar of bubble gum while Sid just takes small strands and one of his cutscenes in The Incredible Toon Machine has him effortlessly eat a huge sub sandwich.
  • Cartoon Cheese: Unsurprisingly, it is a big thick wedge with holes, what is surprising though is its color being a more realistic whiter color rather than orange. It is Sid's favorite food and he will go for it whenever it is in sight.
  • Cats Are Mean: Downplayed with Al who is more stuffy and lazy than actually mean and always addresses the player with great politeness. Sid certainly brings out the worst in him though.
  • Dance Party Ending: Complete all puzzles and the characters reward you with a musical number (though Al quickly derails it).
  • Deadpan Snarker: Al E. Cat almost always talks in a flat tone and is quick to dish out unimpressed comments to Sid.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: In the ending of the game, Sid plays the piano whilst all the other toons dance and sing. Al stops short in his revelry and mischievously slams the piano's fallboard on poor Sid's fingers. The other toons then glare at Al for this, who then chuckles and looks rather guilty.
  • Eaten Alive:
    • If Al manages to catch Sid, he will beat the snot out of the little mouse and then swallow him whole.
    • Both Sid and Al get eaten by a fish in one of the level intros.
  • Elephants Are Scared of Mice: Eunince the elephant will scream and turn around when she sees Sid, which is really handy when you need her to throw, suck up, or blow away something behind her.
  • Excuse Plot: The Incredible Toon Machine has an intro that tells you what is going on: Sid and Al were having a barbecue, but then Sid accidentally poured gas in the grill resulting in huge explosion that destroys their house. A enraged Al chases Sid, then both get arrested for doing a cat and mouse chase without authorization. Now they need to work in the Toon Factory for a year. An appropriately ridiculous explanation for solving ridiculous puzzles.
  • Glass Cannon: Strangely enough, Al is this. He is capable of killing Sid without any assistance of an item, but he is also far easier to kill than Sid who often bounces back from most abuse.
  • Guilt-Based Gaming: Or in this case "Distraction Based Gaming", if you try leave the game it will ask for confirmation; the button that let's you stay is a gigantic no button that is covered in neon lights, the confirmation button meanwhile is a small grey line of text nearby that says "Affirmative".
  • Mid-Battle Tea Break: One of the objects unique to the game is a factory whistle that will go off when its switch is tugged. No matter what is happening, Sid and Al will immediately stop what they are doing and take a lunch break. Bonus points to Al for actually getting out tea and crumpets, Sid meanwhile chows down on a Dagwood Sandwich.
  • Non Fatal Explosion: Either played straight or averted depending on who is blown up: Al is Reduced to Dust, while Sid just suffers from Comedic Underwear Exposure and quickly leaves the screen in embarrassment.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Bik Dragon is a small little dragon who will breath fire when bumped by something, torching anything and anyone in front of him.
  • Piano Drop: There is a big grand piano you can use to weigh down things or drop on Sid or Al. It is similar to the anvil, though is larger and breaks when dropped far enough. Also while Sid will survive being hit by an anvil, he can't take being crushed by the piano.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Two of the random sound effects for explosions are someone yelling "BANG!" and someone else calmly going "Thump".
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Quite a few of the things at your disposal are objects from the other Incredible Machine games that have now been toonified. This includes the see-saw, dynamite (now a Cartoon Bomb), and the gun. Some do behave a bit differently though; for example the teapot in the Incredible Machine obeys gravity, whilst the teapot in this game floats in midair.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Sid loves cheese and Al loves fish, they will immediately walk to their favorite food regardless of what is in their way. Eunice meanwhile loves peanuts and will try to suck them up if she sees them.
  • Title Drop: The intro reveals the game takes place in is the Toon Factory, though the singers mention it's true name: the Incredible Toon Machine.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Sid and Al will waste no time to beat the other up, but are also almost never apart. The Incredible Toon Machine further emphasizes this trope with lot of puzzles opening with Sid or Al asking you to hurt the other, while many other puzzles have Sid or Al ask you to help out the other.
