Just as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was split into two films, so too was it split into two video games. They were released by Electronic Arts in 2010 and 2011 to coincide with the releases of the respective halves of the film.

Both games dispense with the Wide-Open Sandbox approach, which certainly would have been difficult to reconcile with the storyline of the last two films, what with Part 1 featuring the trio on the run and Part 2 just being one big battle. Instead, both games are essentially realized as Third-Person Shooters with wands in place of guns. Also, Part 1 has exploding potion bottles used like hand grenades.

A handful of the film actors opted to voice their characters for the Deathly Hallows games, most notably Rupert Grint, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, Warwick Davis, and Toby Jones. Despite having voiced their characters for previous games, Ralph Fiennes and Bonnie Wright did not do so this time. And for whatever reason, Tom Felton voiced Draco Malfoy for the Part 1 game but not for Part 2.

These were the last Potter games released by Electronic Arts. Subsequently, their licensing deal with Warner Bros. expired.

Tropes

  • Adapted Out: Peter Pettigrew is removed from the story, with Dobby knocking out two random Death Eaters instead. Ginny is absent from Part 1 but appears in Part 2.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different:
    • In Part 1, you play as Harry while he's disguised as Albert Runcorn.
    • In addition to Harry himself, Part 2 has Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Neville, Seamus, McGonagall, and Molly Weasley being playable.
  • Benevolent Architecture: Being cover shooters, these games are filled with chest-high walls.
  • Bowdlerise: Molly Weasley's line, "Not my daughter, you bitch!" is missing the last two words in the game.
  • Colon Cancer: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1: The Video Game
  • Final Boss:
    • Hallows, Part 1: A group fight, you vs. most of the evil cast at Malfoy Manor.
    • Hallows, Part 2: Come on, do we really have to tell you which two characters fight to the death?
  • Heel–Face Turn: Draco gives Harry his wand during the climax, a moment that was a invokedDeleted Scene in the actual movie. This moment did not occur in the novel either, meaning the video game is, in fact, the only version of Deathly Hallows in which Draco receives an explicit redemption.
  • Master of Unlocking: Hermione in the Hallows, Part 2 game.
  • Standard FPS Guns: The second Deadly Hallows game essentially converts all attack spells to this, ignoring their canonical effects for the sake of (relative) balance. The Expeliarmus spell is equivalent to a pistol, Petrificus Totalus is an overpowered sniper rifle, etc. with one spell even acting as self-guiding missile launcher that can break through (some) walls. One wonders why the Death Eaters even bother with Avada Kedavra …
  • Take Cover!: Both games have conveniently placed chest-high-walls all over the place.
  • Third-Person Shooter: The Deathly Hallows games are essentially this with wands in place of guns. Part 1 also had three kinds of exploding potion bottles in place of hand grenades, though they were removed from the sequel for balancing reasons.
  • Wolfpack Boss: Deathly Hallows - Part 1 ends with a fight against the Malfoys and Bellatrix at Malfoy Manor.
