Clarent Saga: Tactics is a Strategy RPG created by David Nguyen and David Chang. It is set in the same world as Crimson Sword Saga: The Peloran Wars, a Role-Playing Game made with RPG Maker, but one does not need to play it to understand this game.

The story follows two factions: the Ranasseh Empire, as they fight to unify the land of Pelora, and the army of Prince Abel of Meyr, as they battle the Ranasseh Empire and the monsters they unwittingly awaken.

This game uses the following Tropes:

  • Aloof Ally: John, the Assassin in the Ranasseh Empire; he claims to be sticking around just because it puts a steady flow of cash in his pocket, but ends up being driven to avenge them should Abel's forces defeat David in combat.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: The first seven battles of the game have you control the Ranasseh Empire's army, while the eighth on switches over to Prince Abel as he fights to reclaim his throne and stop the Empire's tyranny.
  • Back from the Dead: Daniel, a friend of Abel's father, is revived by a one-time-use staff after the Ranasseh Empire kills him before Abel's eyes. Also, in one story branch, Abel's entire army, as well as the brother of his swordswoman, are brought back by a powerful saint to fight David.
  • Battle Couple: David and Abigail, as well as Abel and Ari.

  • Bonus Boss: Your reward at the end of all three story branches is a battle against every named character in the game, including your own army, at the maximum level.
  • Brother-Sister Team: The Ranasseh Empire features two, consisting of Paul & Breena, and Cyrus & Deanna.
  • Controllable Helplessness: The first non-tutorial map of the game is from the perspective of four unarmed kids (two of which aren't even named) against armed cultists planning to sacrifice them, which the player is guaranteed to lose.
  • Cute Mute: Brenda, the Bow Knight of the Ranasseh Empire, is unable to speak.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Zeke, David's foster son and a talented mage, despises his birth father because he pimped out his mother, then offed himself when she perished and he could no longer pay his debts.
  • Enemy Without: Towards the end of the main story path, the Cult of Brax traps Abel and makes him fight the embodiment of his inner darkness.
  • The Faceless: David is always seen wearing a helmet, including in his dialogue portrait.
  • Fighting Your Friend: In the "C" story path, Abel's dark side triumphs, and the final battle is against all of Abel's friends.
  • Final Death: The game has a variety of difficulty levels, and picking "Normal" or higher means that any units that fall in battle are gone forever.
  • Gambit Pileup: King David of the Ranasseh Empire plans to use the power of darkness that the Cult of Brax is tempting him with to eventually wipe them out, while the cultists are planning to revive their Dark Messiah Harpan the fallen angel through David.
  • Happily Adopted: Zeke idolizes his foster father David. Additionally, Abel learns that the king of Meyr couldn't produce offspring, but he still considers the king to have been a wonderful father.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Near the start of David's campaign, Brenda and Paul (who were abandoned as children) can encounter their long-lost uncle Luke protecting a holy bow. Unfortunately, Paul has Undying Loyalty to David, and Brenda can't say anything in her defense due to having no voice.
    • Additionally, both Abel and David are candidates for a dark god's reincarnation due to their bloodline, making them distant relatives.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: In the "B" story branch, without any prior indication that it will happen, David is given a holy ring that allows him to wield the dark sword Clarent without being possessed by Harpan.
  • Offered the Crown: The previous king of the Ranasseh Empire had no offspring, and so passed down his crown to his most notable general, David.
  • Pregnant Badass: In the sixteenth map, should she be defeated in battle, David's wife Abigail reveals she's carrying his child.
  • Previous Player-Character Cameo: Pascal, John, and Daniel all originate from The Peloran Wars.
  • Recurring Boss: Cyrus of the Ranasseh Empire is encountered by Abel's forces five times throughout the "A" story, though the first is a Hopeless Boss Fight at the start of Abel's campaign, and the fifth is as a corpse resurrected by the Cult of Brax.
  • Sibling Rivalry: In the "B" story branch, it's revealed that one of the leaders of the Cult of Brax, Issal, has a sister named Ishtar that turns against them because of how the cult treated them as kids.
  • Sixth Ranger: In the "B" story branch, this role goes to Ishtar, the rebellious cultist that gives David the ring he needs to wield Clarent without harm.
  • Story Branching: The game has three different routes, with splits occurring at the 16th and 19th battles of Abel's campaign, dependent on whether the player wins or loses those battles.
  • Tactical Rock–Paper–Scissors: As with Fire Emblem, a series this game was inspired by, there is a Weapon Triangle of swords, lances, and axes, and a Magic Triangle of elemental, dark, and light.
  • Title Drop: "Clarent" is the name of the dark sword that's connected to the revival of Harpan.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: David's ultimate goal is to bring peace and unite the land, by crushing all of his potential opposition.
  • Villain Protagonist: King/Emperor David, for the first seven maps of the game. And from the seventeenth on, should you let Prince Abel die in the sixteenth. There's also Dark Abel in the "C" story path.
  • We Cannot Go On Without You: The majority of battles have the defeat of the main character as an instant-lose condition.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: Each of the endings features a bit of text describing what happened to the playable characters after the war.
